Cynopsis: Kids!
12/11/09
Good morning. It’s Friday, December 11, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released its congressionally mandated report, Virtual Worlds and Kids: Mapping the Risks, which examines the incidence of explicit content in online virtual worlds. The FTC surveyed 27 online virtual worlds, including those specifically targeted to young kids, analyzing how easily kids/tweens can access explicit content in virtual worlds and what virtual world operators are doing to prevent minors from accessing that content. The findings of the report reveal that while there is little explicit content on kids-aimed worlds, such content is moderate to heavy on worlds designed for teens and adults. Following up, the FTC suggests that kids and parents become better educated about online virtual worlds and that operators: Use more effective age-screening mechanisms; use or enhance age-segregation techniques; re-examine language filters; provide more guidance to community enforcers in virtual worlds and report violators or potential underage users; and employ a staff of specially trained moderators who are equipped to take swift action against rule violations.
Teen-targeted virtual world Habbo Hotel introduces Habble, a new measurement tool designed to help marketers learn more about and reach tweens/teens by providing the ability to track the level of online conversation taking place about their brands in-game. Habble will also help advertisers/marketers determine if their efforts are effective with this audience by measuring brand names, slogans or key phrases over a specific period. All conversations remain anonymous and brands using the tool do not have access to personal information about Habbo users. Habbo’s community currently counts 155 million registered avatars, with a majority of its users being under 19.

MORE KIDS STUFF
Teen-targeted Channel One News ( www.channelone.com ) will debut its new special 1969-2009, hosted by anchor Justin Finch, during its regular news broadcast on Monday, December 14. The special compares the views of teens today on important topics (e.g. money, race, war etc.) with those of teens in 1969, whose views were featured in a CBS News documentary, CBS Reports; Generations Apart, that debuted 40-years-ago. The CBS documentary interviewed 1300 young people across the country as well as interviews with University of Colorado college students and their parents. For its special Channel One News conducted its own survey of 1300 young people and also visited the University of Colorado at Boulder, posing questions to students just as CBS News did. In addition to airing on Channel One in middle schools and high schools nationwide, 1969-2009 will also be found on its website as will be available to educators via Channel One Connection, which also offers teaching resources and other educational programming. Channel One News and CBS News partnered this fall for the production of its daily 12-minute news program.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox Licensing) unveils its merchandising campaign to support the release of James Cameron’s Avatar (PG-13), which opens wide December 18, 2009. For the initial Avatar merchandise program Fox Licensing has teamed with several key partners for a range of products across four main categories:
- Ubisoft is releasing the video game title James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP and PC. There is also a Limited Edition of the title for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii. Additionally, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will include two exclusive 6-inch Mattel action figures – Avatar Jake Sully and Na’vi Warrior Tsu’Tey – that will only be available by purchasing the limited edition game.
- Toy partner Mattel will release a line of toys based on the movie featuring its new technology, augmented-reality. Each action figure, vehicle and creature in the line will come with a 3D web tag, called an i-TAG, which consumers can “scan” using a home computer’s webcam, which will reveal special content onscreen unique to the corresponding product. Content varies for each item, but could include biographical information, additional images and animated models of the figures. When the i-TAG for deluxe figures/vehicles/creatures are scanned, animated 3D models will “come alive.” Place two i-TAGs from the Battle Pack together and the 3D images will interact with each other.
- Fox Licensing has also signed Sideshow Collectibles to develop a line of collectible statues, maquettes, life-size busts and dioramas. Next year will also see additional collectibles introduced by Gentle Giant Studios, Inc. and The Noble Collection.
- In the apparel category partners include JEM Sportswear and Awake Inc. creating a line of t-shirts, sweatshirts and fashion tops for older boys and young men. Additional, Accessory Innovations will introduce a line of backpacks and bags.
- Publishing partners will initially publish five new books simultaneous to the movie’s release, Abrams releases The Art of Avatar: James Cameron’s Epic Adventure with a forward by Peter Jackson and epilogue by James Cameron. HarperCollins is set with four titles, Avatar: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora, and the other three are for from HarperCollins’ Children’s Books for young readers, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Movie Scrapbook, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Reusable Sticker Book, and the chapter book James Cameron’s Avatar: The Na’vi Quest.

Friday Fun Fact: Our galaxy has approximately 250 billion stars – and it is estimated by astronomers that there are 100 billion other galaxies in the universe.
Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: This Parker Brothers board game was patented in 1935 by Charles Darrow, tho the game itself can be traced back to 1904 when it was created by a Quaker woman to teach the single tax theory. The mascot is Rich Uncle Pennybags; he was renamed in 1999. Interestingly, the game was distributed by fake charities set up by the British Secret Service to World War II prisoners of war – the distributed games held in them items useful in escaping – maps, money, etc. What is this game? Today’s Trivia Question: Originally created in a Denmark workshop by a company called Ole Kirk, Christiansen in 1932, these popular plastic toys created with an injection molding machine, were sold widely beginning in 1949. The ultimate designed was perfected in 1958 and patented that January. If you had the a set of this toy system from 1958, they could easily interact with a set you bought today. In fact the moldings for today’s toys are still made in Denmark. What is this popular toy? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
