Indie filmmakers and producers eager to build audiences via YouTube got a big break – the world’s biggest video site has removed the 15-minute upload limit for selected users. The company made the announcement in its blog, saying the change stems from the copyright protection tools YouTube has implemented. “This launch has been made possible in part by the continued advances in our state-of-the-art Content ID system, as well as our other powerful tools for copyright owners. Over 1000 global partners use Content ID to manage their content on YouTube, including every major U.S. movie studio and music label,” the company said. While YouTube has allowed longer videos to be uploaded by many of its partners, the new policy extends to additional users who have “a history of complying with YouTube Community Guidelines.” YouTube is by far the biggest platform for gaining audiences and this change will likely help producers expose their work to more viewers. It’s a smart move for YouTube as well, as it builds more good will with creators and brings more content to the site.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
NATPE snagged some A+ speakers for its conference next month in Miami. WPP CEO Sir Martin Sorrell will keynote on January 24 with a talk on content creation and synergy. The programming lineup also includes Ben Silverman with Electus, David Eun of AOL, Rino Scanzoni of GroupM, Cesar Conde of Univision, Ted Sarandos of Netflix and others. On the talent side, Burn Notice stars Gabrielle Anwar and Sharon Gless will also speak. NATPE is including an advertising innovation track to connect brands, buyers, and studios and has landed speakers from American Express, AT&T and Pepsi. This year’s event will be held January 24-26 at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami, marking NATPE’s move to Miami after a long run in Vegas.

Cable network Spike TV inked a deal with TV check-in service Philo to create badges for the Video Game Awards this Saturday on Spike. Philo is like FourSquare for TV, letting users check in and about the TV shows they are watching. The badges are connected to new games debuting in 2011 such as “Batman: Arkham City,” “Resistance 3” and “Thor: God of Thunder.”

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos will receive the new Award of Excellence in Innovation at next summer’s Banff World Television Festival. Netflix has earned the honor for its work in helping big and small content creators reach new digital audiences, the festival said.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
IAB is launching the Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence, a new division tasked with helping grow the mobile marketing and advertising business. Ericsson exec Anna Bager joins as VP and General Manager. The center will focus on consumer research, case studies, best practices and other areas.

 

 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Now authors can stress weekly about their sales figures thanks to a deal between Amazon and Nielsen BookScan that brings Nielsen’s point of sales data to writers. Sales figures are now available to authors who sign up in Amazon’s Author Central database. BookScan is the industry standard for the book business and purports to track 75 percent of print trade books sold in the United States, but many industry experts have called into question its numbers. Some authors have even said BookScan numbers only account for 15% of their actual sales because BookScan doesn’t include school, library or digital sales.       

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
While still small compared to TV, the mobile video viewing market in the United States is growing quickly.  Nielsen reported that the number of people watching mobile video in the second quarter of this year rose more than 43% compared to the same period last year.
 
iPad sales will keep soaring, eMarketer says. The research firm predicts Apple will have sold 8.5 million iPads by year-end, comprising 88% of the tablet market. Next year, Apple is on track to sell nearly 20 million, with more than 30 million slated to make their way to consumers in 2012. At that point, Apple’s share of the tablet market will be 74%. Staying current on the world’s news is the most popular use of the iPad with 75% of users spending at least 30 minutes a day consuming news, according to a study from the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri. The report revealed sobering, but not unexpected news for papers ­ more than half of print newspaper subscribers who use their iPad at least an hour a day for news are very likely to cancel their print subscriptions within six months, the study sad.

AETN is leveraging its Facebook platform to now sell merchandise such as DVDs, tee-shirts, hats and bobbleheads from shows like History’s Pawn Stars and American Pickers and A&E’s Dog the Bounty Hunter and Paranormal State. The network group plans to launch additional Facebook fan shops in the first quarter of 2011. 
 
Fans of Who Wants to be a Millionaire can now play the latest version of the game show’s app on iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches. Sony Picture Television’s 2waytraffic International launched the 2011 version in 70 countries.
