Good morning. It’s Friday, August 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Only one of the Top 100 Global Brands does not have a presence on YouTube. The other 99 have collected 9.5 billion views of more than 285,000 videos on more than 2,200 channels. And now the folks at Pixability have closely studied how they’ve all done and offered up the lowdown along with a few best practices in a new white paper. Some surprising details:
- Fewer than half of the brand videos posted gained 1,000 views or more, while 1,300 of the videos topped 1 million views.
- 37% of brand channels hadn’t been updated with new content in more than four months and many of the channels were inactive.
- Top brands post 78 new videos per month, while top media companies post 500 per month.
- Top brands that integrate videos with social media had 89x more tweets and 330x more Facebook activity than those that didn’t.

Barry Diller’s Aereo is creeping into more cities with its $8 monthly charge to see live, streaming video of what’s playing right now over on those networks that you generally pay a lot more moulah to see. Aereo, which won a case filed against it by broadcasters already, will be available in Miami, Houston, and Dallas next month.
The digital shift is coming, swift and sure… and it isn’t just the digital people who think so anymore. Seventy percent of media buyers predict that more TV dollars will switch to digital within the next year, an IAB surveyof the recent Digital Content Newfronts attendees found. Also:
- 78% said they came away from the week of 17 presentations with at least one opportunity their company or a client.
- 64% of ad buyers with responsibility for multiple media platforms said they anticipated their “TV plus Digital Video” buys to increase over the next year.
- 33% of buy-side attendees said the Internet ad industry marketplace positively affected their plans for digital video advertising buys.
One criticism of the whole shindig? 74% of buy-side attendees requested shorter event times at next year’s NewFronts.
Nielsen and FreeWheel have agreed to a partnership that will see FreeWheel integrating Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings into its video ad management platform, giving its clients the ability to easily track campaign measurement and tag their ads as of September. The hope is to significantly streamline the measurement process for joint FreeWheel and Nielsen clients.

Nick Landry, a product manager at Infragistics, a manufacturer of user interface development tools, who heads up the company’s mobile-development tools group, recently created a “top 100 iOS apps” list and then checked out how many of them could be found in Android, Windows 8, and Windows Phone versions. The Windows Store only had 54 of them. Some of the apps not found there include Facebook, Zillow, and Pinterest.
Grupo Clarin’s Yuisy, the largest video games, app, and digital content developer and publisher in Latin America, has partnered with the Exim Licensing Group’s Exim Tech to create online strategies that will help Exim’s licensing program get even stronger.
NBC’s Today Show has launched an app so folks have a way of accessing the show’s videos, stories, and images to share with pals. The app also provides a “behind the scenes access to the TODAY team,” but don’t expect to get a gander of Matt Lauer or Savannah Guthrie rolling out of bed way before the sun rises. The app will also offer surveys and special deals.
PayPal co-founder Max Levchin and former Google exec Mike Huang just launched Glow, an iPhone fertility app that doesn’t just track menstrual cycles as other such apps do. This one uses data to provide more reproductive health info as well as the best times to conceive. There is a version for men, too, so women don’t have to be solely responsible for carrying around the worry and the info. Plus, if the app doesn’t work, it also offers a premium service called Glow First that actually will help fund fertility treatments. Users can pay in $50 monthly for 10 months and if they aren’t pregnant by then, the company will help fund treatments. Levchin has put $1 million into a fund to get that started.
Disney has just released a new $13.99 iPad app. Disney Animated, that gives users access to animation art from all 53 animated films that Disney has produced over the years. It’s the most expensive price for an app that Disney has set, but where else are you going to have access to content from The Fox and the Hound and The Emperor’s New Groove? The app has stills, animated clips, interviews with animators, and, well, a boatload of background.
YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen are taking on Vine and Instagram by launching their own video app, MixBit. The free app currently only has an iOS version, but will have an Android version by the end of September if all goes as planned. The app allows users to combine other MixBit videos found on the company’s website into one longer film. Tarantino wannabes can film, record, and edit films that are up to one hour in length right on the mobile device.
Viggle, the app that acts as a “second screen” for TV loyalty, has launched the Viggle Audience Network, giving advertisers access to an audience of nearly 10 million users. Viggle has three million registered users; the rest come from a combination of such launch partners as Boxfish, BuddyTV, and Dijit Media’s NextGuide, and Viggle will be able to sell ads across the group. At its first anniversary in January, Viggle’s customers had spent 176 million TV hours checked in with the app; by May, the number had swelled to 24,932,949, Viggle President and COO Greg Consiglio tells Cynopsis Digital. “From our launch through June 10, Vigglers redeemed 1,824,043 rewards with a retail value to consumers of $13 million. Second-screen experiences like ours are making TV more interactive, fun, and rewarding.” All that fun has also meant pulling in more than $10 million in revenue from its January 2012 launch to the end of March this year, Consiglio shared.
Mobile advertising company NativeX claims that its new targeting features are “the most precise demographic targeting technology to date.” NativeX is using hundreds of thousands of attributes to target consumers, including the usual device type and location along with age, income, gender, ethnicity, education, purchasing history, and plenty of other things. During testing of the new targeting, there was an increase of 500 to 600 percent in eCPMs.
The Live on Letterman concert series has already surpassed 185 million views on CBS.com and Vevo with its showcases of some big-name acts, such as Adele and The Killers. Now it will be adding more interactive features. When musicians John Mayer and John Legend appear on his show on August 19 and 20, respectively, the Live on Letterman sequence that is streamed live to CBS.com and Vevo will have multiple camera angles for viewers to choose from, “share the moment” instant photos, and the ability to help pick the last song as well as trivia games to play during the performance. The concerts will also be available on demand afterward.
FremantleMedia North America has promoted David Luner to the newly created position of executive vice president, brand partnerships and franchise management. He’ll now oversee all of the company’s ancillary businesses, including digital, integrated marketing and brand partnerships, licensing, and live events, among other things… Real Media Group has added Lindsey Bono and Kara Nilan to its media sales team in New York. Bono most recently worked at DraftFCB while Nilan was part of Real Media owner 24/7 Media’s account management team… Andrew Morse is joining CNN Worldwide as senior vice president, overseeing domestic news gathering and digital editorial efforts. Morse is leaving is spot as Bloomberg LP head of U.S. television.
