Cynopsis: Kids!

08/08/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Scholastic inks a deal to sell its US direct-to-home continuities business to Norway’s Sandvik AS, a company that sells books for kids up to 7-years-old directly to parents via email and the internet.  Scholastic announced in December it was looking to sell-off the division.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Scholastic’s direct-to-home continuities division sells educational book and multi-media subscriptions to consumers via telemarketing and direct mail.  The agreement does not include Scholastic’s facilities in Maumelle, AR and Danbury, CT.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Author James Patterson’s young adult book series Maximum Ride will be adapted for the big screen by Columbia Pictures, which has acquired the feature film rights, per VarietyDon Payne (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) will pen the script for the movie, with Patterson serving as executive producer and Avi Arad, Aria Arad and Steven Paul producing.  A quick look at Amazon.com shows that the fifth book in the series is titled Waterwings: A Maximum Ride Novel will be published on March 16, 2009 by Little, Brown and Company.  Additionally, the site indicates that Maximum Ride, Vol. 1 Manga (Maximum Ride The Manga) will be released by Yen Press (www.yenpress.us), an imprint of Hachette Book Group USA, on January 6, 2009, followed by volume 2 in October 2009.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Astral Media’s Family Channel (Canada) concludes its summer music focused programming block, Family Jams, with the premiere of Disney Channel’s The Cheetah Girls: One World, on Friday, August 22 at 8p, the same day and date it bows on Disney Channel.  An early look at the Disney Channel Original movie, which features the Cheetah Girls in India, will be available via Family OnDemand from Tuesday, August 19.

Qubo will host the world TV premiere of the new 3D CGI animated series Turbo Dogs across its broadcast blocks on this October 2008.  Specifically, Turbo Dogs will bow: on ION Television on Friday, October 3, where it will air regularly on Fridays at 3:30p; on qubo on NBC, Saturday, October 4 and Saturdays thereafter at 12 noon; in Spanish on Telemundo on also on October 4 and Saturdays thereafter at 8a; and on qubo Channel on Sunday, October 5 (time TBD).  Based on the Racer Dogs picture book by Bob Kolar, Turbo Dogs is provided by Scholastic Media and co-produced by CCI Entertainment and HuHu Studios.

Australia’s Channel Ten acquires the UK family-targeted fantasy/drama series Merlin (13×60) episodes) FremantleMedia Enterprises, which holds international rights for the series (excluding the UK), for air on the channel in 2009.  The mixed live-action/CGI animated series, which is slated to premiere on BBC1 this September 2008, features an animated dragon voiced by actor John Hurt.  Produced by Shine Television for BBC, Merlin also features CGI animation created by The Mill, the visual effects team behind the movie Gladiator.  FremantleMedia has also inked broadcast deals for the series for the US where the series will air on NBC in winter 2009, and in Canada on CTV.

Nickelodeon changes the date for the second season of Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! to Tuesday, September 2, 2008.  New episodes of the series will air Tuesday-Friday, September 2-5 at 1:30p.

Two Corrections:  The correct link for the beta version of the social network for Beacon Street Girls is http://beta.beaconstreetgirls.com/.  And the title for the upcoming Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! DVD is A Tale of Tails and not as it appeared yesterday.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Really Useful Group (RUG) taps Jetix Consumer Products (JCP), the licensing division of Jetix Europe, to serve as its merchandising agent.  Under the deal JCP will represent non-theatre merchandising for RUG’s popular musicals including Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Starlight Express, cats and Evita across all European territories, Israel and the Middle East.  RUG will continue to license merchandising for these titles inside theatres.  JCP will showcase these properties and launch merchandising programs for these musicals at Brand Licensing in London October 1-2, 2008.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Chapman Entertainment expands with promotions and new hires:

  • Adele Sinclair joins Chapman’s licensing team as Produce Development Executive UK, overseeing UK product approvals on both Fifi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car.  Most recently she toiled for Wesco as Graphic and Product Designer, where she worked on both brand among others.  Sinclair will report to Licensing Manager, Caroline High.
  • Ross Allen is upped to Product Development Executive International.  Ross, who had been Product Development Coordinator, will be responsible for international approvals across the two brands.  He will also repot to High.
  • Bethan Jones is promoted to Marketing Executive and Polly Palmer joins the company as Marketing Assistant.  Both will report to Head of Marketing, Melissa Brown.
