08/04/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 4, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

e-Media Exchange could put the ad-buying/selling world on its ear.  An announcement is expected today regarding the launch of this new auction website where TV commercial time will be bought and sold, on an as yet unnamed network for a midseason test.  According to today’s Wall Street Journal, behind the project are a group of major commercial advertisers including including Toyota Motor, Wal-Mart Stores, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and Home Depot, as well as a handful of media buyers including Interpublic Group’s Magna Global.   The group also plans to launch an informational site today called admarketpilot.com.  While the project hopes to provide an alternative ad-buying method, it does not see this as something that will replace entirely the good old network/advertiser haggling – that still has its place as advertisers look to enhance their buys with  product placements, title sponsorships, and so on.

Tonight’s Premieres:
IFC:  The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman at 10p and The Business at 1030p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Wednesday episode of Bravo’s Project Runway was the most watched telecast in the network’s history to date, even outperforming the season #2 finale of Project Runway. It was the #1 show in cable reaching 1.4 million A18-34 viewers; 2.2 million A18-49; 2 million A25-54; and more than 3.4 million total viewers. For the uninformed, this was the episode promoed with Tim Gunn saying “you’ve broken the rules”, “you’ll be leaving tonight.”

This is beginning to sound like a new trend:  The comedy pilot project The Adventures of Big Handsome Guy and His Little Friend, originally on the Fox development slate before being ultimately passed by, has shown up on the internet.  Produced by 20th Century Fox Television, the studio says it has no knowledge of how this pilot came to be on the internet, and says it was posted on the internet without their knowledge or their consent. Additionally, the studio has sent cease and desist letters to the three sites who have been running the video – break.com, slubber.com and vidking.com. Interestingly, the place it hasn’t shown up is youtube.com, where defunct pilot Nobody’s Watching got it’s big break from NBC. 20th’s option on Handsome Guy doesn’t expire until December, and Fox had asked for an additional script which potentially leaves the door open for a midseason series.  Other busted pilots have shown up on the internet in recent days including briefly Our Thirties on YouTube.com, and still showing is If You Lived Here You’d be Home By Now.

IFC will piggy-back two new original scripted series tonight starting at 10p. First off, is The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman about two friends barely hanging on to their film careers, and following is The Business which features an ensemble cast of indie-filmmakers as they try to make a movie. Each half-hour show has been picked up for eight episodes and will air as part of IFC’s Film Fanatic Fridays.

MTV News and Docs has produced a new documentary series about the Indiana juvenile justice system called MTV Juvies, premiering September 5 at 10p. The eight-part series shows what happens to real-life teens in trouble as they are confined in a detention center and appear in court before a judge. Following the TV show each week, MTV’s broadband channel Overdrive debuts Life after Juvies, which gives a glimpse into the kids’ lives post-detention center.

WB11/WPIX, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York WB affiliate will premiere text2win, an original, live interactive TV game show on August 7 – the first for New York viewers to try their hands at winning cash prizes using mobile phones or computers. The show is produced by 3CirclesMedia and the hour-long show will air nightly through August 13 at 2a.

Sony Pictures Television International and Arts Alliance Media have an agreement which will allow mega-blockbuster movies such as The Da Vinci Code and The Producers available for download to rent online. The VOD deal allows Arts Alliance Media the rights to digitally distribute 180 of Sony Pictures’ titles, classic and newer releases via www.lovefilm.com and www.aol.com.uk.

This sounds pretty cool — Net Cam.  In a tennis tournament, Net Cam can make the ball look as if its in 3-D as it go whizzing by, and you can catch it on The Tennis Channel. The network will partner with its long-time advertiser Acura, dubbing the new camera perspective the “Acura Net Cam” and will use it for the first time during the Acura Classic which begins its volley this week.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

TNT‘s new medical drama pilot Heartland has cast Treat Williams as its star surgeon.  From Warner Horizon Television, the story is about a heart surgeon and his work, relationships and life.  Williams last series role was on Everwood – he was a world-renowned doctor there too!

Casting Call: CBS will hold open casting calls for its new online reality series Hook Me Up, set to “air” on CBS’ broadband channel innertube. The show allows viewers to vote for the perfect pair as potential suitors vie for the attention of a contestant. The first open casting will be in Los Angeles, August 5 from 3 to 6p at the CBS Studio Center (4024 Radford Avenue in Studio City, Calif.); and in the Boston area on August 11 from 3 to 6p at CBS4 (1170 Soldiers Field Row in Brighton, MA).

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

The Weather Channel Networks has promoted Brad Grant to Director/VOD. Working within the programming department, Brad will manage all VOD operational duties.

Bryan Seabury has been appointed as VP/Drama Development with CBS Paramount Network Television. He will work in tandem with Julie McNamara, SVP/Drama Development, to whom he will report, as well as Maria Crenna, EVP to develop new drama series for broadcast and cable networks.

Earl Cokley is the new VP/Interactive Systems Development for Scripps Networks. He is charged with managing the development of and support for the company’s online business, among other duties. Earl will report to Ron Johnson, CIO.

Starz Entertainment Group LLC (SEG) has upped Chelsye J. Burrows to the new position of VP/Programming Publicity. Chelsye will distribute publicity for all SEG programming across multiple channels and platforms. She will continue to report to Tom Southwick, SVP/Corporate Communications.

World Championship Sports Network has named Bo LaMotte as SVP/Affiliate Relations, where he will lead the network’s expansion across cable TV and other distribution areas.

And a quick housekeeping note — Cynopsis will be on vacation (no editions) during the week of August 7th, but no worries – we’ll be back in full force on August 14th

Friday Fun Fact:
More than 14 million BIC pens are sold daily in 150 countries. “BIC” is actually a shortened version of founder Baron Marcel Bich’s name.
