Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 31, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

BabyTV in Singapore will begin offering its TV programming in Mandarin Chinese, as well as in the already available English, from Monday, September 3, 2012 at 9a. Additionally, BabyTV welcomes two new animated series, Big Bugs Band and Stick with Mick, this September. Big Bugs Band features music from different cultures around the world, while Stick with Mick introduces kids to new vocabulary words and concepts (e.g. opposites, shapes, colors). A Fox International network, BabyTV is a 24-hour commercial free channel for K4+ and can be seen in Singapore on StarHub TV’s Kids basic Upsize Group. BabyTV’s new dual language initiative aligns with the Singapore government’s effort to promote bilingualism, specifically for Mandarin. English is the predominant language in Singapore.

PBS Kids launches Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Play at Home with Daniel (, the first app based on the new preschool series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (, and available for iOS devices.  Set to premiere this Monday, September 3 (check local listings), Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is inspired by classic series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Produced by The Fred Rogers Company and CloudKid, the new app ($1.99) is designed for K2-4, and focuses on the series’ social-emotional school readiness curriculum, and of course allows kids to play with Daniel Tiger, son of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’s Daniel Striped Tiger, as he goes about his daily life in various age appropriate activities and games.

Entertainment One (eOne) acquires the UK licensing rights to the new CGI 3D animated feature film Justin and the Knights of Valour, which will be distributed in the UK by eOne’s film division in August 2013. eOne will showcase licensing opportunities for Justin and the Knights of Valour at Brand Licensing Europe this October 16-18 in London. eOne is seeking licensing partners for the property in the UK across all major categories, including toys, publishing, apparel and promotions, specifically targeting K5-11. A story of friendship, honor and courage, the movie follows a young boy, Justin, on his quest to become a knight. The $30 million production from Spain-based animation studio Kandor Graphics features a star-studded voiceover cast including Freddie Highmore (he lends his voice to Justin), Antonio Banderas, Charles Dance, Rupert Everett, Barry Humphries, David Walliams, Julie Walters, and Saoirse Ronan. eOne will support the UK theatrical release of the movie with a major marketing campaign across all media platforms that will drive awareness of the film. International pre-sales for Justin and the Knights of Valour have already been inked in 120+ countries.

Jazwares enters into a licensing deal with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to create collectible figures and plush toys based on eight iconic Hanna-Barbera animated characters – The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Tom & Jerry, Yogi Bear, Space Ghost, Secret Squirrel, Captain Caveman and Hong Kong Phooey. The new products are debuting at retail in the US now through fall 2012. Jazwares’ new Hanna-Barbera plush line includes a 12-inch pull-string plush with sound and plush deluxe sets. The Hanna-Barbera line of figures features a 3-inch articulated assortment, 2-inch collector’s sets and 6-inch figures.

Mindshapes and BBC Worldwide team up to make Wibbly Pig, the popular lid’s book and animated series, available in Mindshapes interactive world, Magic Town. Targeted to K2-6, Magic Town, which is both an app and website (an app and, features characters from various books and TV series, including Elmer, Little Princess, Winnie the Witch, Little Red Riding Hood, and Aliens Love Underpants, and now Wibbly Pig. Each story in Magic Town is offered as a “livebook”, and there are 100+ titles, which is Mindshapes proprietary storytelling format. The livebooks are designed to use storytelling to stimulate kid’s imagination, reasoning, social skills and language development. The Wibbly Pig TV series is based on the popular books by Mick Inkpen.


Cartoon Network (Canada) will feature Ben 10 throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend, beginning today Friday, August 31 at 6a and running through Monday, September 3, 2012, including episodes from three Ben 10 seasons and capping the holiday off with a sneak peek episode of the new fourth seas, Ben 10: Omniverse on Monday, September 3 at 8:30p. The event will also include the Canadian premiere of the TV movie Ben 10: Destroy all Aliens on Monday at 6:30p. Here’s how Ben 10’s weekend takeover of Cartoon Network (Canada) looks:

Disney XD will premiere its new series Crash & Bernstein on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 8:30p. The comedy revolves around Wyatt Bernstein (played by newcomer Cole Jensen), the only son of four kids, whose puppet pal, Crash, springs to life and becomes his loud-mouthed surrogate brother who knows no limits. Crash & Bernstein was created by Eric Friedman (Austin & Ally, I’m In The Band) and is executive-produced by Friedman and Mike Larsen (Real Time with Bill Maher, Rodney). The puppet of Crash was designed and built by Chiodo Brothers Productions. The series is a production of It’s A Laugh Productions, Inc. To support the series launch, Disney XD has a multiplatform schedule lined up:

-Tonight, Friday, August 31, Crash and Cole Jensen (Bernstein) will host the Disney XD Fall Preview special, during which they will intro a new episode of Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja and a sneak peek of Slugterra and their own series, available on WATCH Disney XD, and Disney XD on Demand via affiliates, including AT&T, Charter, Cox, Time Warner, Verizon, Comcast and DIRECTV.
-On Monday, September 24, the premiere episode of Crash & Bernstein will be available on iTunes as a free download.
-Nightly, Monday-Friday, October 1-5, Disney Channel will offer sneak previews of the series featuring Crash and Jensen.
-Monday, October 8, immediately following the premiere of Crash & Bernstein on Disney XD, the premiere episode will be available via WATCH Disney XD and
-Tuesday, October 9, the debut episode will be available on Disney XD on Demand via several affiliates, including AT&T, Charter, Cox, Time Warner, Verizon, Comcast and DIRECTV; Disney XD Mobile VOD via AT&T U-Verse, MetroPCS, Sprint and Verizon; along with Xbox Live and Sony Playstation.
-Finally, will offer several activities and games at: On Monday, September 17 fans can go to the site to use the Crash This Site activity, allowing viewers to browse any website and watch Crash destroy the site with each click of the mouse, just by adding a bookmark to their browser toolbar; from Monday, September 24, the site will introduce the Wyatt’s Room Remodel activity, where players can help redecorate Wyatt’s room; Finally, launching on Monday, October 8 is a new virtual-reality arcade game, Bro-tastic Games, where players can compete as Wyatt or Crash in a series mini- games.

In the UK, Channel 5‘s Milkshake preschool programming block orders new seasons of the CGI animated series Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps and Fireman Sam from HIT Entertainment. Set to begin debuting this September 2012, Channel 5 has picked up 40 episodes of Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps, seasons five and six (20×12/each). The series is based on the books by author Katherine Holabird, and illustrator Helen Craig. The new 52 new episodes of Fireman Sam, seasons six and eight (26×10/each) will begin premiering in October 2012. This marks the first time that Channel 5 will air new CGI animated version of Fireman Sam. HIT’s series Thomas & Friends also airs as part of the Milkshake block.
