Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08.02.13
Good morning. It’s Friday, August 2, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Google’s $35 Chromecast has been a hit, selling out everywhere it’s sold, but it has some room to grow on the content-partner side. reports that the product that helps bring YouTube vids, Netflix streams, and Google Play content to TVs is working toward a deal with Hulu Plus and exploring one with HBO Go. Others that have interest in forming a relationship include AOL, Discovery’s Revision3, Redbox Instant by Verizon, Vevo, and Vimeo.
In Other Words: Everybody wants to play with Chromecast, particularly since it came out of the gate so strong.
When parts of the federal government are occasionally discovered to be spending ridiculous prices for everyday products, such as $7,600 for a coffee brewer or $436 for a hammer, it is going to lead to folks trying to figure out just how this kind of thing can happen. So fiscal watchdog Bankrupting America has put together a new web series, The Government, to help everybody understand wasteful spending. Modeled after The Office, the show highlights all the insane lengths federal agencies sometimes go through to keep their annual budgets intact.
As part of YouTube’s Geek Week that kicks off on Sunday, the site will see the rebrand of The Game Station to Polaris, a network that focuses on gaming and geek culture. Polaris will combine the efforts and content of some of the site’s most popular gaming-related characters, such as PewDiePie, Yogscast, and Dodger, to form one all-powerful geekapalooza. According to Dar Nothaft, vice president and general manager of Polaris, this signifies the trust viewers put in the network’s stars. “They look to our channels for guidance in how to navigate the media landscape, what cultural moments to care about, and even how to interact with the world at large,” he told Cynopsis Digital. The network will be produced by Maker Studios and feature such original programming as The Daily Byte, a look at the day’s top nerdy headlines from YouTube’s most popular female gamer; Rumble Zone, which features the network’s top gamers competing in multiplayer games; and Broken Quest, which follows “the animated adventures of a group of hapless warriors in a dangerous fantasy setting,” according to the network’s press release. Nothaft noted that the network just passed a billion monthly views and is excited about the potential for future growth. “We plan to continue to partner with the most beloved gaming personalities on YouTube, focusing on helping them develop their businesses through monetization, merchandising, and content and audience development,” he told Cynopsis. “Our Polaris channel will benefit from our talent-driven formats, engaging a native audience that devours content on the YouTube platform.”
Netflix picked up a lot of press recently for snagging a few Emmy nominations for a couple of its original series. YouTube has done them one better. It is guaranteed to take home a statuette. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has informed the company that it will be definitely getting a technical Emmy for its personalized-video recommendations. The award will be handed over at the next Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
Russia has implemented a new law making it illegal to host pirated video on a site. According to Bloomberg, this has made it a suddenly hot market for online video. While Netflix and Hulu would love to become the brands of choice in a nation of more than 140 million, it appears that Russian brands are way ahead of them. Moscow-based Ivi.ru is the current market leader with more than 17 million users. Around 90% of its content is free with advertisements. Pirated movies and TV shows had previously been so ubiquitous that expecting consumers to pay a fee was foolish. Bloomberg has it that ad revenue from online video in Russia will be around $75 million this year. It remains unclear if Netflix will take a run at Russia. It has launched in the UK, some Nordic countries, and the Netherlands.
Time Warner Cable has launched its on-demand streaming app, TWC TV, for Samsung’s Smart TV platform. Any customers that that subscribe to TWC’s “Standard (Expanded Basic)” tier or above are eligible to use the app. The on-demand programming available depends on the local market and what tier the customer pays for. However, there is no live TV option as of yet.

According to a new report from independent mobile video and media company Vuclipthat surveyed more than 14,000 people, 53% of them share mobile video. “We expect this to rise over the next months and years,” Arun Prakash, chief operating officer of Vuclip, told Cynopsis Digital. “Mobile video views in the U.S. skyrocketed by 300% last year, and global mobile video traffic will continue to grow at 75% year after year. And as social media and technology continue to keep us connected, social sharing will only increase.” Other data:
- 79% of those under the age of 18 are sharing video through mobile phones.
- 20% of people globally say they share mobile video via SMS: Google+ and Facebook tied for second place, with around 12%. For those under 18 globally, 52% of them share mobile video via SMS.
- In the U.S., 33% of those under 18 share mobile video via Facebook.
- Only 4% of people around the world share video most commonly via Twitter, Vuclip estimates that those tweeters drive an estimated 30% of total daily video views.
- 48% of respondents globally said they view movie trailers on their phones more often than on television, on desktop computers or even in movie theaters.
- The top five celebrities searched for on mobile devices in the U.S. in the second quarter on Vuclip were Justin Bieber, Barack Obama, Michael Jackson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Beyonce. Sorry, Kim Kardashian; you’ve got to settle for sixth place this time around.
An app is coming to test for food safety, environmental toxins, and medical diagnostics. Developed by researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the app works together with a handheld cradle to become a biosensor. This could not only help folks avoid eating food with ingredients they are allergic to, but spot water contamination and other nasty stuff.
You can have six-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt running across your mobile screen. In fact, you can tell him where to run. The Fastest Man in the World has made a deal with Dimensional Branding Group, the global licensing agency for Imangi Studios, to allow his likeness to appear as a playable character in the game Temple Run 2, one of mobile gaming’s biggest with more than 500 million downloads between its two iterations. If you want to be the Jamaican sprinter, you’ll have to shell out $.99 in the app itself.
Smithsonian Channel has just released an updated version of its free iPad app, which won app of the week from iTunes when it was launched last year. It now offers up a completely redesigned Create Your Channel option as well as the ability to choose favorite videos, curated topical playlists, image galleries, and hundreds of short- and long-form videos.
Tremor Video has named Tim Ware as vice president of mobile and connected TV sales. He was most recently The Wall Street Journal’s mobile and video sales director. Before that, he spent time at ESPN, McCann-Erickson, and Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising.
