Good morning. It’s Friday, August 27, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
The Hub, the new joint venture network between Discovery Communications and Hasbro, adds another new original series, Hubworld, to its launch lineup. A weekly, half-hour magazine series, Hubworld is hosted by actor/comedian/magician Justin Willman (Cupcake Wars) and will focus on things important to kids as well as what’s up on The Hub network. Produced by Hasbro Studios in association with Natural 9 Entertainment, Hubworld will offer highlights of the network’s series and the world of entertainment, music and sports, as well as kids’ service and volunteering. Kathy Samuels (Rachael Ray, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood) serves as executive producer on the series. The Hub launches on Sunday, October 10, 2010.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Simon’s Cat ( www.simonscat.com ), the popular online viral animated shorts created by Simon Tofield, will make its TV debut on CBBC this month. The Simon’s Cat short, Let Me In (2-minutes), on Monday, August 30 at 3:45p as part of the channel’s My Toons Summer Special, which features the top eight popular animations from the CBBC website. The newest Simon’s Cat animated short, The Box, recently debuted on YouTube, where it was viewed 1+ million times over two days. Earlier this year United Agents named RDF Rights as the UK licensing agent for Simon’s Cat, which recently inked a deal with Portico to produce a range of paper products including greeting cards, gift wrap, gift tags, gift bags, stationery gifts and calendars and diaries.
Nickelodeon is looking to get preschoolers rocking with its first annual Nickelodeon Mega Music Fest, an hour-long primetime concert, premiering Labor Day, Monday, September 6 at 8p. The concert special will simulcast on Nick Mobile. Targeted to preschoolers and their families, the special was recorded live at Brooklyn Academy of Music in NYC and is hosted by John Leguizamo and Sherri Shepherd. The concert features appearances by Justin Bieber, Dr. Phil, Colbie Caillat, Wyclef Jean, The Roots, Dora the Explorer, Yo Gabba Gabba!, The Fresh Beat Band, The Laurie Berkner Band among others. Additionally, NickJr.com ( www.nickjr.com ) will offer musical activities and games that dovetail with the debut of Nickelodeon Mega Music Fest, including inviting families to upload their own music videos, and will also feature behind-the-scenes footage and music videos. The Nickelodeon Mega Music Fest is produced by Nickelodeon Productions in association with Bob Bain Productions.
Disney Channel will premiere its new animated series Fish Hooks on Friday, September 24 at 9p, with simulcasts on Sprint TV, MobiTV and Flo TV. Fans will also get a sneak peek at the series with an 11-minute preview episode at 10p on Friday, September 3, 2010, immediately following the premiere of the network’s original movie Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. Created by kid’s book illustrator/author Noah Z. Jones (Not Norman, The Monster in the Backpack), Fish Hooks is produced by Disney Television Animation, and features a mix of digital animation and photo collage and follows the adventures of three tween fish friends as they navigate the tumultuous waters of high school. The series stars Kyle Massey (Corey in the House), Chelsea Staub (Jonas L.A.) and Justin Roiland (The Sarah Silverman Program) as the three fish friends, with recurring guest star voice-overs by Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live), Richard Simmons (of exercise fame), Jerry Stiller (The King of Queens), Atticus Shaffer (The Middle) and Edie McClurg (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), among others. The Fish Hooks online area will also from September 3 at www.disneychannel.com/fishhooks . Additionally, kids can preview the series via mobile VOD from September 4, and on iTunes from September 10, while a full episode preview will be available on Disney Channel SVOD from September 17.
Scholastic Media‘s Maya and Miguel will encourage kids to get up and get moving as part of Move It with Maya & Miguel Week this September 20-28, on PBS Kids Go! ( www.pbskidsgo.org/mayaandmiguel ). Maya and Miguel are serving as national spokes-kids for First Lady Michelle Obama’s national Let’s Move campaign, which is working to combat childhood obesity but getting kids up and playing and making healthy eating choices. Earlier this year, Scholastic teamed with the Ad Council on behalf of the US Department of Health and Human Services and the First Lady’s Let’s Move Campaign to launch a series of public service announcements.
KI.KA (Germany) acquires the first 26 episodes of Nelvana Enterprises new CGI animated series Babar and the Adventures of Badou. The channel plans to debut the series in Germany in spring 2011. Aimed at preschoolers, the series introduces King Babar’s 8-year-old grandson Badou, and his friends. Babar and the Adventures of Badou is Canada-France co-production between Nelvana Studio and TeamTO, in association with The Clifford Ross Company. The series is set to premiere on YTV (Canada) this November and will then roll out across other channels around the world.
Mango Distribution, an Asia Pacific distributor and joint venture between Philippines-based Top Draw Animation and Australian producer Sticky Pictures, recently completed a sale of its new action/comedy property Invisible Network of Kids (26×24) to ABC3 (Australia). Targeted to K6-10, Invisible Network of Kids (I.N.K.) follows the adventures of a group of kids charged with protecting their school. I.N.K. is a co-production between France’s Samka Productions and France 3.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Bulldog Licensing is named to represent family-targeted Monster Jam’s consumer products and licensing efforts in the UK, Ireland and Benelux. The 2010 European Monster Jam tour picks up again this fall. Monster Jam can be seen on TV on Bravo in the UK and Ireland, and RTL and Jim TV in Benelux. The licensing program already includes Mattel as master toy license, while K’Nex is the construction toy licensee, and Activision is set to release a third Monster Jam game, Monster Jam: Path of Destruction, this November.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
George Sakkalli is named Sales Manager Asia, Mango Distribution. Based in Singapore, Sakkalli is responsible for identifying new properties to develop across multiple platforms as well as seeking new broadcast partners for new and existing properties in the pan Asia region. He will report dually to Mango directors Wayne Dearing of Top Draw Animation and Donna Andrews from Sticky Pictures (she is also Mango Sales Manager Australia and New Zealand). Sakkalli previously toiled in sales in Asia and Middle East for Power TV, ITV and Granada International, including o a range of kid and family-targeted properties.
Executive shifts at CPLG Germany, beginning with the news that Managing Director, Gerold Kolenbrander is exiting the company after 14 years. Kolenbrander, who joined CPLG Germany in 1996 as Director/Finance, did not announce his immediate plans though the company says he is off to “pursue new life goals.” Taking the reins from Kolenbrander as the new MD is Joachim Knodler, who has been Director/Sales and Retail for the last seven years. Knodler previously worked for Hasbro and The Marketing Store. Stepping into the role of Director/Sales and Retail is Sibylle Braune. She will handle the toy and games categories. Braune joins the company from Merchandising Media where she was Director/Licensing and Home Entertainment.
