Cynopsis: Kids!
08/26/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 26, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Random House Children’s Books launches The Poky Little Puppy app, the first in a line of apps based on Little Golden Books titles, for iPhone/iPad/iPod touch.  Designed to support preschooler reading and listening comprehension skills, The Poky Little Puppy app is currently available at an introductory price of $3.99, will be $4.99.  Users can experience the story in several ways, either they can watch and listen to the story with words highlighted as the text is read, read on their own (with individual works spoken aloud when tapped), or readers or others can record their voice reading the story.  Additionally, the app features the Little Golden Books Hide-and-Seek Challenge, which can be played at the end of each page to unlock bonus stickers.  At the end of the story the reader can use their collected stickers to create a storybook scene and save it to the device’s photo album.  Random House Children’s Books collaborated with digital media agency Smashing Ideas, which was acquired by Bertelsmann earlier this year for its Random House division.  The Poky Little Puppy, one of the 12 original Little Golden Books titles published in 1942, was written by Janette Sebring Lowrey and illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren.

Lord Waheed Alli and William Astor, the Chairman and deputy chairman, respectively, have both resigned from Chorion, the rights holder of properties including Noddy, Mr. Men, Peter Rabbit and Agatha Christie, as the result of financial debt restructuring difficulties, per London’s Financial Times.  Chorion’s current debt is estimated to be about $114 million, which stems from its 2006 acquisition by the private equity group 3i for $181 million.  Alli and Astor led a management team that sold Chorion to 3i.  Chorion’s portfolio of properties includes Octonauts, Olivia, and Paddington Bear as well as the rights to Raymond Chandler and Georges Simenon.

Friday Fun Fact:  Since housecats are clean and their coats are dry and glossy, their fur easily becomes charged with electricity. Sparks can be seen if their fur is rubbed in the dark.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: How many years after the debut of Mickey Mouse was it before Minnie Mouse made her first appearance?  None, she appeared with Mickey on May 15, 1928, in his first film, “Plane Crazy” Steamboat Willie was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon to be released, not the first to be made.  Kudos to:   Ian James Corlett-Creator – BEING IAN/Vancouver BC; Kim Cooper-Astral Television Network/Toronto; Tom Potter- Radio Disney AM 1560/NYC; Amy Chrzanowski

Today’s Trivia Question:   What iCarly star played opposite Jack Black in the 2003 film “School of Rock?”  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
