Good morning. It’s Friday, August 21, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
In the UK CBBC moves forward with more animated programming, both on-air and online, including a new series. CBBC has commissioned the new animated series Muddle Earth (26×11), based on the kid’s book of the same name by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. The story of a magical land that time forgot, remembered and then forgot again, Muddle Earth is produced by CBBC with animation by Hullabaloo Studio. Additionally, CBBC picks up a second season of Aardman Animations‘ Shaun the Sheep (20×7), with new episodes debuting this November. The CBBC is also expanding its online portal, Cartoon Works, to serve as an outlet to premiere short-form programming content from young UK animators. Beginning this fall, Cartoon Works will feature new animated work from kids through adults; the best of the submissions will be featured on www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc and air on CBBC Channel in spring 2010.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Warner Bros. names Bill Birch and Geoff Johns to co-write Shazam!, a movie version of DC Comics‘ series about Captain Marvel, per Variety. It’s been a while since we heard anything about the Shazam movie, but director Peter Segal (Get Smart, 50 First Dates) is still attached to the project, which he’ll produce under his Callahan Filmworks banner with partner Michael Ewing. Johns will also consult on the movie. Previous writers on the project include John August, William Goldman, Bryan Goluboff and writing team Joel Cohen and Alex Sokolow. The movie began at New Line before making its way to Warner Bros.
Looks like the animated movie Yellow Submarine will get a makeover if Robert Zemeckis and Disney can ink a deal for the project, per THR. The new version of the movie would feature motion and 3D, which Zemeckis has used in his most recent productions including The Polar Express, Beowulf and his upcoming version of A Christmas Carol (November 6, 2009). Released in 1968, the original Yellow Submarine movie, which of course features the music of the Beatles and their animated likeness (but not their voices), was produced by United Artists and King Features Syndicate.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Cartoon Network picks up an additional eight episodes of its live-action competition series Destroy Build Destroy. The series heads back into production this October, with singer/writer/entrepreneur Andrew W.K. back at as the host of the show. Destroy Build Destroy was created by Dan Taberski and produced by Idiot Box & Mess Media, with Taberski and Scott Messick serving as executive producers.
