Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/19/11

Good morning, it’s Friday, August 19, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

YouTube struck a deal with music publishers allowing advertising to accompany more videos on its site. Ending a four-year legal dispute with the National Music Publishers Association, the deal makes it easier for publishers to license music for user-generated content videos. These videos can include any content from slide shows put to music to fans performing cover versions. This deal specifically helps small publishers who did not have agreements in place with YouTube to allow advertising on, and receive revenue from, user-generated content. YouTube has separate pre-existing agreements with the major music publishing companies that are not affected by this deal.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Transmedia production company beActive announced the production of “350 South: An American Journey,” a documentary series that will follow environmentalists Ian Lacey and Lee Savile as they cycle from Alaska to Argentina in over 350 days. The series features a website, blog, YouTube channel, Facebook and Twitter pages, iPhone and iPad apps, and a map with GPS capabilities that would allow audiences to track the location and progress of the cyclists.

DirecTV is bringing its NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go mobile service to Sony’s PlayStation 3. The service will be free for new subscribers and available to existing subscribers for an additional $50 charge. If you don’t subscribe to DirecTV, don’t worry, you can also sign up for the service for $340, $5 more than the price of the Sunday Ticket package.

Google joined Universal Music Group, Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, MSN, YouTube, and over 150 celebrities in promoting Bob Marley’s Save the Children campaign for East Africa. The search giant posted a link to the campaign video under the search box on its homepage yesterday to raise awareness for the cause.

Universal Pictures will screen “The Big Lebowski” on Facebook via its “Social Theater” app. Fans will be able to rent the movie for 30 Facebook Credits ($3) for 48 hours. While watching, viewers will be able to comment and “like” their favorite quotes and scenes. Renters will also receive a $1 discount off the rental for up to 5 of five Facebook friends through the social network’s “Buy with Friends” platform. The program coincides with the release of the movie on Blu-Ray and will be only made available to users over 17 years of age, as the film is rated R.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Crowdmug, an app that allows users to see what places currently look like, announced their official public launch. The app works like this: You request a place you want to see, the amount of photos and videos you’d like to receive, how quickly you’d need them, and how much you’re offering to pay. An alert is then sent out to people in the area as well as made public to everyone. A person can then, in turn, respond and complete the request by uploading the files on to the app. Once the transaction is complete, the uploaded files are also archived and made accessible to everyone. Crowdmug is currently available in all U.S. cities and found on the iPhone.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

According to research conducted by NCH Marketing Services, coupons downloaded from the internet hold the second-highest redemption rate (16.9%) at grocery stores. NCH also found a 15% increase in digital promotions in the first half of 2011 over the same time period in 2010. In a related study, Consumer Goods Technology found that as individual incomes rose, so did the tendency to visit online deals sites, such as Groupon, versus manufacturer or couponing websites.

Consumers are becoming more educated to the ways of behavioral advertising. A recent Harris Interactive study as reported by eMarketer revealed that consumers are well aware of online advertising terms like “internet cookies” (84%), “interest-based advertising” (66%), and “online tracking” (65%). And, watch out, it’s beginning to shape their views of the online advertising world. 64% indicate that they probably wouldn’t even share their name with advertisers.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Kodak is putting its patents on the block. Citing the difficulty of making deals with so many different companies that make tablets with cameras, the imaging company is putting their patents on sale, and in turn, taking advantage of the growing tablet and smartphone market. Speculation alone of a deal to sell numerous patents to a large buyer in the wireless industry helped Kodak’s price jump by 26% on Wednesday, August 17th.

Zynga has been hit with yet another patent lawsuit, this time from another social gaming startup, called Agincourt Gaming, who claims in a press release that they own “foundational patents that claim priority back to 1996 and cover the processes for credit-based online gaming and a prize redemption system based on the outcome of game play.” Agincourt is seeking monetary damages and a permanent injunction that could shut down Zynga’s Facebook games.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

In an IDC study that looks at the future of video game console demand through 2015, the company predicts that, with the introduction of new gaming platforms such as Wii U and increasing market growth in some developing economies, spending will bounce back from the less-than-stellar rates seen this summer. In fact, the research forecasts console hardware and disc software revenue to increase at a compound growth rate of 3.6% from 2010 to 2015.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Today in augmented reality, ShowTime has created a mobile app for iPhone and Android users to accompany its new fall drama series, “Homeland.” The app, called “ Watch Carefully,” allows users to access hidden content, watch video clips, and play games. Wanting to promote the theme of “things not being as they seem,” the app encourages users to scan ordinary objects as well as the cover and a special image inside September’s issue of Wired Magazine to unlock exclusive content. Viewers can also visit watchcareful.ly to play more games, unlock more content, and even watch a preview screening of the pilot episode.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Confirmit, a global provider of market research solutions and customer and employee feedback, hired Claire Sporton to be their new Director of Customer Experience Management. Based out of Confirmit’s London office, Sporton’s role will focus on recruiting and working with partners to add value to the Confirmit product portfolio.

China Cablecom Holdings, Ltd., a cable service provider for the People’s Republic of China, appointed David Kratochvil to its Board of Directors and Audit Committee. Mr. Kratochvil will be joining the board as an independent director.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Skitch is an app that lets you annotate, edit and share your photos and screenshots you culled from the internet. The best thing about Skitch, aside from the fact that it lets you crop, edit, and even draw on any photo, is the platform’s incredible ease-of-use. You can instantly drag-and-drop photos and upload and share them by just clicking one button. Simply put, it’s cool and it’s fast. Available for purchase in the Mac App Store for $20, Skitch has been one of the store’s best-selling apps. And now, it’s available for Android users and is coming to the iPhone. Oh, and it’s also going to be free. Evernote, they of the real-time note-taking and archiving app, announced the purchase of Skitch by also revealing that they will not only offer the app across all platforms, but that it also won’t cost you a penny.
