08/18/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 18, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

When the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric debuts on September 5, it will simulcast live and free to viewers on the internet, making it the first network evening news broadcast to offer this ad-supported service. In addition, after the simulcast, the complete broadcast will be available on-demand, where viewers can watch it all or pick and choose individual reports to build their own CBS Evening News. The CBS Evening News site will also offer a host of other features:

  • Couric & Company, a daily blog from Katie and CBS correspondents from around the globe;
  • Eye to Eye, a daily on-demand feature giving viewers the full extended interviews conducted by Katie or other news correspondents that didn’t make the show, also available via audio and video podcast on iTunes;
  • CBS News First Look with Katie Couric, an afternoon look at that evening’s headlines; and
  • Katie Couric’s Notebook, a one-minute synopsis of the top story presented by Katie, with audio and video podcasts available on iTunes.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

The CW has sent an advisory out to its affiliate base under Pres/Co-COO John Maata’s signature that America’s Next Top Model will debut on schedule on September 20 with a 2-hour premiere, all the episodes for Cycle 7 have completed shooting, and will not be effected by the strike by writer/producers. Additionally, auditions for Cycle 8 have already begun in various cities around the country.  Cycle 8 is set to launch in March.  In his letter to affiliates, Maata advised, “If this proves to be a lengthy dispute that has not been resolved by the onset of production for the next edition of the series, a contingency plan will be developed and whatever steps necessary will be taken to continue delivering episodes that maintain the show’s high standards.”  Writers for Top Model walked out on July 21, having signed to be represented by the WGA West writer’s union, and plan to stay out on strike until the show signs a guild contract, recognizing the union’s basic benefits and protections for its members. As of this date, no formal talks have been scheduled.

NBC Universal has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board alleging the WGA is violating labor laws by encouraging showrunners to not cooperate or work on producing webisodes.  NBC Universal alleges the WGA’s actions are illegal because NBCU’s current contract with the showrunners includes asking them to create content for the internet. The specific webisodes in question are for The Office, Crossing Jordan, Battlestar Galactica and the fall freshman series Heroes.

ABC has made a slight schedule change with the new drama series Men In Trees. The pilot of the one-hour show, starring Anne Heche, will now premiere on September 12 at 10p, following the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars. Men In Trees will debut in its normal time slot on September 15 at 9p, following a repeat of its pilot episode at 8p. The show was previously scheduled to premiere on September 22.

More from ABC: Production has begun in New York for the half-hour comedy series The Knights of Prosperity, with its premiere scheduled for October 17 at 9p. The single-camera show, from Touchstone Television, stars Donal Logue as the leader of a modern-day band of poor Robin Hoods, who steal from the rich to give to themselves. The inexperienced robbers target Mick Jagger’s Central Park West apartment, and during the series Jagger himself will make a cameo appearance.

MTV has given the go-ahead for a third season of Run’s House, depicting the life of former rapper, Joey Simmons’ family. Eight new episodes will begin taping next month. Pimp My Ride also has a stamp of approval from MTV for a fifth season, with sixteen new episodes of the fantasy car makeover show.

Correction: The British spy series MI5 returns to the A&E Network in a two-part special on September 15 and September 22 at 11p.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

Jane Krakowski has signed to join the cast of NBC’s 30 Rock, set to debut on October 11 at 830p. Krakowski will play the star of The Girlie Show, the setting for the comedy series, replacing Rachel Dratch who played the role in the pilot.  Dratch will now appear in several episodes of 30 Rock playing a variety of characters.

ABC has given a put pilot commitment to a drama project called Crime Prevention Unit, from Warner Bros. TV and Heyday Prods. The project is based on the UK series Murder Prevention, about a police unit that hunts down the bad guys and captures them before they commit a criminal act. (Sounds like a Tom Cruise movie, eh?)

FX has a drama project in development called The Product about a high profile rock band that is also seriously dysfunctional. The pilot script was written by Dave Navarro, Cliff Dorfman and rock music journalist Neil Strauss.

Casting Call – Correction:  The online talk show Ray on the Town, featured on the web site DailyComedy.com, is looking for established or well-known up and coming actors, musicians and comedians to interview as guests for the show. For more information, go to [email protected].

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

The YES Network has named Michael Spirito as Director/Business Development, reporting to Ray Hopkins, COO. Michael’s responsibilities include finding new revenue opportunities, while staying on target with the company’s overall business strategies.

iN DEMAND Networks has added several to its staff: Jason Sirotin and Lee Gerowitz have both been hired as Producers for Howard TV On Demand, where they will manage the television production of Howard Stern’s Sirius radio shows and other archival shows, as well as develop original programming and content. Both report to Doug Z. Goodstein, Executive Producer for Howard TV On Demand. This past February, the network named Paul Iannacchino as Creative Director to supervise the promotions for the high-definition networks INHD and INHD2, the MOJO on INHD brand, Howard TV and other company properties. Paul reports to Stacie Gray, SVP/Executive Creative Director.

Mark Levy has been upped to VP/Creative Director, NBC Sports & Olympics. The announcement was made today by David Neal, Executive Producer, NBC Sports and Executive Vice President, NBC Olympics. In this new position, Mark will serve as Creative Director for both NBC Sports and Olympics, in charge of the on-air look and image of all NBC Sports and Olympic programming. He will continue directing NBC’s Olympic Film and Profiles unit. He will also continue oversight of all production and editorial functions of NBC’s Stamford, Conn. based HD production facility, and its development arm, The Edison Project. He will also serve in a senior creative role for NBC Sports and Olympics digital initiatives. In other words, he’s gonna be a busy guy!

Joe Gesue has been elevated to Editorial Director, NBC Sports & Olympics and NBCSports.com. Additionally, Brian Brown has been named Producer/Story Editor, NBC Sports & Olympics and NBC Olympics producer Becky Chatman has been promoted to Senior Producer. Joe will now also oversee the research, writing and editorial content for all Sports & Olympics programs, and oversee the editorial direction of NBCSports.com.   Brian now officially joins NBC Sports and Olympics as story editor and senior features and film producer, and will work with Mark Levy on the Stamford-based The Edison Project. As Sr Producer, Becky has also been named to the “NBC Sunday Night Football” production team.

Carl Gottlieb has been appointed as Executive Producer/Political and Investigative Reporting at WCBS-TV, effective August 28.
