Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08.16.13

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

A preliminary agreement has been reached between Sony Corp. and Viacom for Sony’s planned Internet-based video service to carry Viacom’s channels, the Wall Street Journal reports. On-demand content and traditional cable channels will both be streamed to Sony’s service if all goes as planned. This could mean everything from MTV, Comedy Central, BET, CMA, and Logo will all be streaming through Sony. The Journal notes that the agreement is only preliminary and Sony has also had discussions Walt Disney Co., Time Warner Inc. and CBS Corp.
In Other Words: That means there is a little less content on the market for the folks at Intel and Google to fight over for their planned Internet-based video services.

Netflix has expanded its current agreement with Scholastic Media to show more of the company’s TV series and content, including The Baby-Sitter’s Club, The Magic School Bus, and Goosebumps. Unfortunately for Netflix, the deal doesn’t include any of the video content Scholastic owns related to the Harry Potter series. However, this is the first time that much of this content will be available as streaming content. Netflix will have 300 hours of original kids’ programming coming next year, thanks to its agreement with DreamWorks Animation.
In Other Words: This marks another step in the battle between Netflix and Amazon Prime to rule the children’s streaming-media roost and is another feather in its kid-entertainment cap.

Acorn TV, the first British TV-focused streaming service in North America on Roku and at www.Acorn.TV, is tripling its available content. Previously, Acorn streamed a full season of 18 rotating series. Now Acorn is adding at least six new and classic series each month as well as offering a catalog of 65 series for catch-up viewing and discovery of new series, with no set end dates.

CONTENT EVERYWHERE

Smart TVs just got a little smarter. Showtime Networks and LG Electronics have partnered up so that viewers with Smart TVs will can opt-in for a second screen experience on their big screen by using their remotes. Originally launched on the iPad as a two-screen companion app, SHO Sync for Smart TVs allows viewers to test their knowledge with trivia onscreen during the broadcast, earn points and badges, and compete against their friends and other viewers of the show. In addition, it allows viewers to take part in live polls and see audience reactions instantly. The SHO Sync content can also be shared via social media.

Broadcasters haven’t been able to convince the court system yet to keep Aereo from doing business so the service keeps slowly rolling out to new cities. As it is, the company doesn’t need that many subscribers in order to actually turn a profit. It hasn’t been made public how many folks actually subscribe now, but Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia says he would be doing fine with 1 million registered users and “extremely fabulous” if it got up to 5 million, CNET reports. But turning a profit would only require hundreds of thousands of subscribers.
In Other Words: Broadcasters have plenty to worry about if it is only going to take this few customers for Aereo to be in the black.

Windows Phone users have been without a YouTube app for three months after it was pulled because Google wasn’t happy that it didn’t have support for ads. Now it’s back so consumers can check out all their favorite cat videos wherever they are  and the ads, too, of course. New features include the ability for users to upload video and stream live video feeds as well as access playlists, manage profile pages, and navigate the app using voice search.

New online video is getting gamers extremely excited about the coming release of Grand Theft Auto V from Rockstar Games. The game won’t be out till mid-September, but Rockstar isn’t afraid to start building the buzz early and released an online video back in July that more than 20 million folks have viewed. Now a new video is out and showcases how up to 16 players can take part simultaneously with the new game. Since its debut in 1997, the brand has sold more than 125 million units.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Sure, it’s the middle of August, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start dreaming of winter. And the folks at Burton Snowboards are surely doing it all year round. To help everybody else get into the spirit, the company is launching a four-part web series, Burton Presents [Snowboarding]. Each 15- to 18-minute episode will focus on a different area of snowboarding, whether it’s backcountry, street, or resorts. The first one lands on Sept. 15 and the rest will be released in two-week cycles after that. Fro the time being, though, fans will have to satisfy themselves with the awesome teaser, which features gorgeous action videography as well as an incredible tracking shot through Burton’s factory in Burlington, Vt.

See you tomorrow,
Mark Miller
