Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Friday, August 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Technology is great until it doesn’t work right. Netflix experienced a meltdown of sorts this week centered around its distribution and shipping centers and was unable to send out any DVDs on Tuesday and most of the day on Thursday. (The company hopes to have all its distribution centers back online by today.) Customer comments on the company blog range from supportive to downright apoplectic.

Katie Couric will be the web-based talking head hosting and’s coverage of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. The podcasts will begin immediately following CBS’ prime time coverage, also hosted by Ms. Couric. They mark the first time CBS has produced original web-only programming live from the convention floor.
With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin. predicting an above average Atlantic hurricane season on the way CBS Mobile partnered with and Quattro Wireless to create a made-for-mobile Hurricane Center as an anytime, anyplace resource. AccuWeather will provide near real-time weather updates including live radar and storm tracker information.
Turner Broadcasting System signed a deal with mobile video service ICO to make content from Cartoon Network and Adult Swim available on its beta platform. Mobile television service ICO mim will begin testing its service later this month with other content partners including Discovery, NBC, MSNBC and TLC in preparation for a 2009 commercial launch.
VOD programmer Exercise TV launched a series of 15 workout programs on the iTunes platform spanning the areas of Yoga & Pilates, Sculpting & Toning and weight loss. Each program sells for $1.99/each.

Online entertainment portal Revision3 signed on to distribute IT how-to web show Hak 5, a favorite with the tech and gadget crowd hosted by Darren Kitchen, Matt Lestock and Shannon Morse. Their first show for Revision3 will appear on Monday, Sept. 8 before moving to a regular Wednesday release day. The Hak 5 folks are broadcasting a live show tonight at 9 pm ET to celebrate the partnership when they’ll be accepting live Skype calls.
New York-based Media6Degrees, Inc closed a $9 million series A round of funding led by U.S. Venture Partners. Media6° provides major brand marketers with targeted audiences using social graph data. The company received early stage funding from Contour Venture Partners, Coriolis Ventures and several prominent angel investors.
YouTube expanded its Video Annotation feature to its embeddable video player, allowing customized videos to be placed on other sites.
Kid-focused virtual reality site WeeWorld signed a licensing agreement with FremantleMedia Enterprises to offer licensing, distribution and home entertainment content to the site, which is now up to 23 million users worldwide.

The first cell phone operating on Google Android OS will hit stores the week of Sept. 17 for existing T-Mobile customers only before being available to the general public a week later, according to TmoNews. The report from the “Unofficial T-Mobile Blog” contradicts rumors that Android may be pushed back as far as 2009. The presale phone is expected to retail for $150.
The new Photogram widget from SRS Labs offers a way to enhance photos you upload to MySpace and Facebook by choosing from a template of sound effects. Sound clips currently available include multiple selections in select categories such as Emotion, Animal Sounds, Nature, Modern Life, You’re a Star and Cartoon Favorites.

Google and AT&T‘s long-running skirmish over net neutrality issues spread to a Congressional inquiry into how network operators collect and use their data. In its response Google pointed the committee toward the questionable advertising practices of “a small number of U.S. ISPs.” On Wednesday AT&T went so far as to point the finger at Google by name. AT&T claimed that Google “logs and stores users’ search requests, can track the search activity by IP address and browser, and can even correlate search activities across multiple sessions, leading to the creation of a distinct and detailed user profile.”
An Italian judge ordered the country’s ISPs to block all access to Swedish file sharing site The Pirate Bay as part of an ongoing investigation into copyright law violation. The Pirate Bay responded by posting a defiant statement on their site instructing Italian users how to bypass the filters.

Online video ad start-up LiveRail introduced a new service called Junction, allowing video publishers to select, display and track video ads from multiple sources. The interface is designed to allow publishers to distribute inventory among multiple partners then pull up consolidated reports and analytics to optimize monetizing strategies.

Lehman Brothers projects U.S. online video ad spending to reach $1.1 billion this year – a 63% bump from last year – accounting for 4.2% of the total U.S. Online Ad Spend. The good news is that growth rate is only expected to accelerate, with online video rising to $2.38 billion in 2010 accounting for 6.6% of the overall pie.
Meanwhile eMarketer downwardly revised its U.S. video ad spending projections. The research firm now has U.S. online video ad spending growing by 55.9% this year to $505 million (down from a Feb. projection of $1.4 billion.) eMarketer’s growth chart does pick up in later years, however, peaking in 2012 when it will total $3.4 billion with a 78% growth rate.

Fans of good old fashioned violent cartoons might want to check out Happy Tree Friends, Mondo Media’s series of gory shorts in the vein of Itchy and Scratchy. The latest one features the deer Mime trying out for the Olympics in the Hurdles, the Hammer Throw and Weightlifting. (Needless to say, things don’t end well for poor Mime.) Mondo Media has built a nice business creating and widely distributing short animations for a slightly older crowd, making sure the content is widely available and easy to digest. The Mondo Mini Shows channel is the #20 most subscribed to channel on YouTube all time with 102 total videos. The shorts are also available on, iTunes, MySpace, Joost and the mobile site. Interestingly folks aren’t going to YouTube to watch the actual Olympics. The site’s Summer Games channel has only 670 subscribers and 1,000 some videos viewed. Not enough blood, I suppose.
