Cynopsis: Kids!
08/12/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 12, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

KidZui, a San Diego-based startup that already offers a kid-centric downloadable web browser, launches a new free web browser Zui.com ( www.zui.com ) aimed specifically at K3-12.  Zui.com, offers a range of filtered visuals and websites, YouTube videos, games, images and suggested related search terms to users from 5 million parent/teacher approved websites.  The new search engine offers 9,000+ kid topics that are available via any web-based browser and via Apple or Android mobile devices.  Zui.com also allows kid users to share what they like online (e.g. videos, games) and text their parents via the engine’s Facebook connectivity.  KidZui also announces that it has raised an additional $2 million of equity.  Backers include Mission Ventures, Maveron and Emergence Capital. Previous investors include Scholastic Corporation.  Zui.com is ad and sponsorship supported.

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) signs a range of deals for Nickelodeon shows.  TVE (Spain) inks a deal for a range of Nickelodeon programming for its kid-targeted Clan TV channel, including:

  • Victorious seasons 1 and 2 (that premiere October 2011), and iCarly season 3, as well as completing a relicense deal for the first two seasons, in a deal that runs until 2016.
  • TVE also picks up season five and six of Dora the Explorer, and season 3 of Go, Diego, Go!
  • The broadcaster also picks up SpongeBob SquarePants episodes 121-178, as well as relicensing episodes 1-120 of the series.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Sinking Ship Entertainment launches the Dino Dan website ( www.dinodan.com ) in the US.  Based on the Nick Jr. CG animated preschool series, Dino Dan revolves around the adventures of Dan Henderson, a paleontologist-in-training, and his friends as they uncover clues about the past and things about dinosaurs.  The new website features a virtual dig site where kids can search for hidden fossils, which unlock new dinosaurs that can then be used in games throughout the website.  Players can use the points they earn to redeem virtual dinosaurs and objects for games at the Dino Shop.  Later this year secret codes will be distributed, via marketing merchandising campaigns, to unlock exclusive content, earn points and dinos on the site.  The paleontological educational content was co-developed with The Royal Tyrrell Museum.  Sinking Ship has also launched the official Dino Dan Facebook page.  Additionally, Sinking Ship, under its distribution partnership with Breakthrough Entertainment, inks a license deal with Musictoday, a Live Nation Company, to launch the Dino Dan Webstore ( www.dinodan.shop.musictoday.com ).  Musictoday will handle Dino Dan online merchandise orders, customer service, special promotions and sales opportunities, which will integrate with the new DinoDan.com website.

Big Tent Entertainment completes several new multi-year partnerships for the ever-growing Domo licensing program in the US and Canada.  Signing on as new Domo licensees are: Buckle Down (leather and silicone belts, pet accessories  such as collars and leashes); Lava Lite (groovy lava lamps featuring Domo); SalesOne (Domo-themed accessories such as terry cuff wristbands, cuff links and tattoo sleeves, and body jewelry); and Underboss Production (one-piece Domo union suits for adults)

Nickelodeon Consumer Products inks deals for Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants in Iberia this summer:

  • In Portugal, Somani-Sociedade Textil signs on to produce a range of bath towels, hand towels and bathrobes based on SpongeBob SquarePants, in a deal that runs until summer 2013.
  • In Spain, MediaLive enters into a deal for a range of SpongeBob SquarePants coloring and activity books for K5-8.  Each of the books includes a novelty element, such as ‘look and find’ books with heat reactive inks, joke books with temporary tattoos, or game books with playing cards.  The MediaLive items are available at retailers including Carrefour, Alcampo, Eroski, El Corte Ingles and Fnac, as well as specialty stores.
  • In a Dora the Explorer deal for both Spain and Portugal, Lugar Difusion is launching lines of wooden hair accessories and kid’s jewelry lines, and fashion accessories.  The lines will be distributed to retailers including Toys ‘R’ US, Merkal Calzados, Baitres and Unidroco.

Marvista Entertainment, an indie producer/distributor of movie and TV programming, secures new investment capital from an group led by Brian N. Jacobs announced his resignation at the end of the year to pursue other interest, but will continue to serve as a consultant for the company.  The transition will see Marvista’s production division headed by Robyn Snyder, who has been promoted to the newly created position of EVP/Production. Friday Fun Fact:
Boot and shoemakers are often commonly called “cobblers.” But the word cobbler is more properly applied to shoe repairmen. Those who actually make footwear are known as “cordwainers.” Shoemakers who made custom, made-to-order shoes were known as “bespoke” makers.
