Good morning. It’s Friday, April 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Universal has cast Taylor Kitsch (John Carter of Mars, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Friday Night Lights) to star in its Naval action/adventure feature film adaptation of Hasbro‘s game Battleship, per Heat Vision.  Directed by Peter Berg, from a script by Jon and Erich Hoeber, the movie will take place at sea and in the skies as a Naval commander Alex Hopper (Kitsch), described as being “wildly spirited” and “a great seaman but a lousy politician,” helps to save the planet from an alien invasion.


PBS Kids will debut four new summer vacation-themed episodes of The Jim Henson Company‘s CG animated preschool series Dinosaur Train, the week of Monday May 24-27 (check local listings).  In the new adventures, the family sets out on the train in search dinosaurs in Asia, Europe and Africa.  The series also welcomes a new character, Gilbert, the conduct’s young nephew.  Additionally, two new series themed games, All Aboard (May 2010) and Dinosaur Track (available now), will be featured on ( ).

Astral Media’s Family Channel (Canada) hosts the network premiere of the Disney-Pixar animated feature film A Bug”s Life on Saturday, April 17, at 6p.  Immediately following the movie’s debut, the network will air it’s debut of Handy Manny Big Race at 7:35p, a special episode of the series featuring guest star NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. and N’Sync’s Lance Bass.  The preschool special makes its Canadian premiere on Playhouse Disney (Canada), an Astral Media multiplex channel available for free to Family Channel subs, on Friday, April 16 at 4:30p.

Skywriter Media & Entertainment Group acquires two kid-targeted properties, which it plans to introduce to international buyers next week at MIPTV 2010: The Wumblers (26×11) is a preschool animated series that focuses on imagination, creative play and language education. The Giddy Gander Company produces the series; targeted to Tweens 8-12, Planet Echo (13×30) is an environment-centric factual live-action series.  Planet Echo is a Manitoba/Ontario co-production between MRV Echo One and Positive Echo One, currently in production with APTN Canada and set to premiere in January 2011.

Foothill Entertainment is packed and headed to MIPTV 2010 with five new series and an updated development slate.  Among the new shows is the new 3D CGI buddy comedy, Raz & Benny.  Created by SphDigital’s Simon Hodgkiss, the series revolves around the misadventures of two mice.  As a result of its new worldwide distribution deal with Ireland’s Screentime ShinAwil (The Apprentice, Popstars, Dragon’s Den), Foothill will showcase the game show series and format, Test The Teachers (20×25).  Additionally, under its partnership with France’s Toon Factory, Foothill is repping the studio’s series Samson & Neon (78×7), Franky Snow, Brady’s Beasts and Kid Clones, across North America and Australia.  On the development side: the live-action series My Momtourage and Me (26×25), created by illustrator/author, Kyla May, will be available from June 2010; development continues on both the animated series Gunk Aliens, based on the book series from HarperCollins Children’s Books, as well as the CGI animated preschool series Gododo, which was created by Phew!! and will be co-produced by Title Entertainment (Canada) and Neptuno Films (Spain).

The Putumayo Kids music label will release its new CD, Rock & Roll Playground, a tribute to early rock ‘n’ roll, on June 15, 2010.  Targeted to kids of all ages, the CD features a range of both well known kid/family artists and up-and-coming ones, including Dan Zanes and Friends, Rosie Flores, Taj Mahal, Linda Tillery, Peter Himmelman, Bill Harley, Uncle Rock, Brady Rymer, Charity and the JAMband, StarFish, Roger Day, Melissa Green, and Rhythm Child.  The CD also comes with a read-aloud booklet that tells the history of rock music and the story of each song.  Additionally, Putumayo Kids will host an online Air Guitar Video Contest (June 1  August 1, 2010), with kids invited to submit their air guitar videos to StarFish’s The Starfish Stomp at

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) picks up the licensing rights to the Korean mischievous graphic character Mashimaro from Clko Entertainment.  Under the deal, FME will represent and grow the property in the UK, Germany, France and Benelux, with a focus on the preschool market and categories including toys, games, gifts, apparel, housewares, food, plush, cosmetics and digital.  Mashimaro, which celebrates his 10th anniversary this year, got its name from creator Kim Jae In’s niece who mispronounced the word marshmallow.

Classic Media enters into merchandising deals with European agencies CPLG and KIDZ Entertainment, to represent and develop its portfolio of preschool properties across Western and Eastern Europe.  Under the deals:

  • CPLG will serve as the company’s Western European licensing and merchandising agency for its new preschool brand Tinga Tinga Tales, which launched on CBeebies (UK) in February 2010.  CPLG will work with Tinga’s existing partners, pan-regional master toy partner, Bandai, and global publishing partner Penguin Group (Puffin Books, UK), both of which will launch product at retail in the UK later this year.
  • KIDZ Entertainment will manage Tinga Tinga Tales across the Nordic regions and Eastern Europe, including Russia.  Classic is also extending its existing representation deal with KIDZ for Postman Pat.  KIDZ will also take on representation of Classic’s Guess with Jess, which also airs on CBeebies.  Existing Guess with Jess pan-regional partners, master toy partners Fisher-Price and publisher Egmont, are set to launch product in the UK this summer 2010.

Konami Digital Entertainment inks an exclusive distribution deal with Autumn Games, 4mm Games and Def Jam Interactive for the music videogame Def Jam Rapstar, slated for release fall 2010 for Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and Nintendo Wii.  Developed by 4mm Games, Terminal Reality and Def Jam Interactive, Def Jam Rapstar is a Hip Hop music-centric game that will feature 40 popular Hip Hop songs at release, which will include region specific titles for the UK and Europe, and makes the player the star of the game.  Fans will also be able to freestyle over the original tracks and will also be able to upload their own videos to the community.  Def Jam Rapstar is being co-published by Autumn Games.


Mohamed Sayed is upped to CFO, Channel One Network.  Sayed, who has served in the network’s finance management group fro more than a decade, was most recently VP/Finance.  A licensed CPA, he began his career with Price Waterhouse (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) and Value Line Publishing.  Channel One Network is an Alloy Media + Marketing Company.
