Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/09/10

Good morning, it’s Friday, April 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Multitasking and a completely redesigned interface featuring folders to organize your apps with are just two of the changes coming to the new iPhone/iPad touch operating system this June. (Word of warning: multitasking, i.e.; the ability to listen to Pandora or the ball game while running another app, will only be available for the iPhone 3GS and later.) Users can also look forward to an iBooks eBook reader for the iPhone, a new multiplayer centralized gaming service and a tap function to zoom in on digital video. Apple is also introducing the iAd turnkey ad plug in for developers, allowing ads to be served to individual apps while they’re running. The new iPad will get receive an upgrade of its own sometime this fall allowing it to multitask as well.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Leading mobile handset manufacturer Nokia launched a music downloading service in China on Thursday, offered as a free 12-month subscription to consumers who purchase a Nokia phone. The “Comes with Music” service, launched with local partner Huadong Feitian, offers DRM-free downloads from Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Music, as well as prominent local independent labels. China marks Comes With Music’s 30th territory launch.

Subscription-based online music service Rhapsody completed its spin off from Real Networks this week and rolled out a price-cut to celebrate. The service is now charging $9.99/month for unlimited streaming to a computer and one iPhone, iPod Touch or Android device (a price drop of $5.) The Premier Plus plan allows you to listen on up to 3 devices and 3 MP3 players.

WSJ.com unveiled a new online “professional edition” that’s even more expensive than the mainstream paywall-protected site. WSJ.com/pro, priced at $49/mo., aggregates content from the Journal, Dow Jones Factiva and News Corp.’s global network of Dow Jones Newswires. The service also offers customizable filters that allow users to personalize what news they receive.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Mark Burnett and pop culture digital studio VIMBY (“Video In My Backyard”) struck a new partnership to offer advertisers digital branded content solutions created by Vimby’s network of filmmakers. The new co-venture will work with media co.’s and advertisers to implement branded content programming across multiple sites, geared toward targeted key demographic groups such as mothers, millennials, the green conscious, health/wellness aficionados and the technologically savvy.

Online video syndication service AlphaBird struck a deal with FremantleMedia to package and syndicate the fashion-themed makeover web series “As Worn By,” produced by the company’s new media division FMX. AlphaBird will look to place the brand-integrated series on prominent media sites on a weekly basis throughout a period of 12 weeks.

Online talk radio streaming service Stitcher closed on a $6 million series B round of funding led by Benchmark Capital with participation from New Atlantic Ventures, Ed Scott and Ron Conway. Bob Kagle of Benchmark will also join Stitcher’s board of directors.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Glam Media launched an iPad-friendly publishing platform enabling advertisers to reach its female-targeted audience on the new Apple tablet as well as other mobile devices. Ads placed with Glam will now be formatted to appear seamlessly on tablets and smartphones, taking into account non-Flash interfaces (like the iPad and iPhone) and location-based social advertising. Glam’s network includes a total of 1,500 publishers reaching a total of 78 million uniques monthly.

Male-focused Break Media launched a new proprietary in-house advertising server dubbed “Apex” to improve ad serving and tracking abilities across its network. The ad server supports all IAB-approved ad formats and will allow advertisers to develop campaigns that combine multiple ad formats (including homepage takeovers, video, and display) with precise targeting capabilities (including geolocation, frequency caps, and consumer intent data.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

It may be a bit premature for the big internet providers to celebrate. The FCC has already begun working on a new plan to figure out how to regulate broadband pricing and management after a Federal Court ruling seemingly stripped it of authority to oversee ISP management practices, per the WSJ. The worst case scenario for ISPs would be if the FCC decides to classify broadband networks as common carriers under Title 2 of the Communications Act, which would allow it to directly regulate pricing and access as it does with landlines. Meanwhile, the FCC announced it has extended the deadline for public comment on its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking measure to April 26, responding to several industry requests.

Following in the footsteps of its French neighbors to the South, Great Britain’s House of Commons passed a Digital Economy Bill imposing a three strikes law to allow ISPs disconnect users after they are warned twice of illegal file sharing, reports the Daily Telegraph. The controversial measure passed 189 to 47 after just two hours of debate.

RDF Media Group is launching a digital initiative converting from traditional DigiBeta to file-based digital delivery of its programming masters. The plan will mean that going forward, RDFR will archive all media digitally and make available digital screener copies of its content on the RDFR website.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Mobile research firm Distimo released its first report focused on Apple’s new iPad. Highlights include:

  • 2,385 applications are currently available exclusively for the iPad. The largest category on the iPad is Games with 833 titles (35%), followed by Entertainment and Education with 260 and 205 titles, respectively
  • 70% of the most popular applications on the iPhone are published in either Games or Entertainment, compared to 40% on the iPad
  • 83% of apps on the iPad are paid vs. 73% of all apps are paid on the iPhone. The average price of all paid apps that are solely compatible with iPad is $3.61 compared to $3.55 for applications compatible with iPhone
  • Medical applications are most expensive on both the iPad ($9.39) and iPhone ($10.73). Conversely, Education ($9.10), Healthcare & Fitness ($4.41), Music ($6.86) and Sports ($4.95) apps are more pricey on the iPad

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Dish Network, which acquired place-shifting service Sling Media in 2007, announced the availability of the ViP 922 set-top, the first DVR bundled with SlingBox functionality.  The HD, dual-tuner 1TB hard-drive box, which retails for $649 for existing Dish customers, allows you to “Sling” TV programming to remote locations via a laptop or mobile device, including the $30 SlingPlayer iPhone app, while recording separate programs at home. SlingMedia is also reportedly working on a higher resolution iPad app (current maximum resolution for the SlingPlayer is 320 x 240.)

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

BBC America has appointed John Taite as VP/Multiplatform Programming. John will be responsible for developing BBC Worldwide’s editorial strategy in the US on branded digital platforms, future genre channel launches and other programming initiatives. He will report to BBC America’s COO for Channels, Chris Carr and Richard De Croce, SVP Programming.

Discovery Communications has hired John Honeycutt to the new role of EVP and Head of International Business Operations for Discovery Networks International (DNI). John will be responsible for implementing multiple cross-functional plans touching programming, ad sales, programming, digital media, research and IT, reporting to Mark Hollinger, President and CEO of the division. He will be based in London.

WE tv and Wedding Central tapped Marjorie Levy as President of Development, reporting to new SVP of Original Productions & Development, John Miller. Megan Lawrence has also been named Director of Development, reporting to Ms. Levy. Both will be based in New York.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Several desktop management tools have emerged to help Twitter users manage the anarchic flow of tweets that come their way. But what the service has always lacked is proper curation. Popular online news service The Huffington Post is unveiled a “Twitter Edition” yesterday, putting out separate pages of tweets organized into 19 thematic sections. Each section, including Politics, Technology and Entertainment, essentially aggregates tweets from movers and shakers in each space – including professional reporters, celebrities, executives and pundits. The Edition(s) enables Twitter members to re-tweet directly from the site and follow new tweeters with one-click. Twitter users will also see their own Twitter feeds on HuffPost Twitter Edition pages. News purists who complain that real news and commentary are no longer distinguishable are not going to like the approach, but it’s fair to say that train left the station long ago.
