Good morning, it’s Friday April 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
 
Fox Interactive Media made MySpace Music official, tapping the music libraries of each major label except EMI to create a comprehensive DRM-free music retail site that will feature free ad-supported audio and video streaming, paid MP3 downloads, concert tickets and merchandise. News Corp./Verisign joint venture Jamba will provide an adjacent mobile storefront offering ringtones, wallpapers, etc. The service represents the first marriage between a major social network (30 million users and counting) and a major content offering (50 million bands.) And it builds upon one of MySpace’s core competencies – promoting and helping others to discover music. The service is expected to roll out incrementally over the next few months.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Rather than just build outposts in existing virtual worlds, Nickelodeon is creating its own online environments for kids to play in. Beyond Nicktropolis, Nick has plans to add a virtual world around its Neopets social media site; one is built around a massive multiplayer game with a working title of Monkey World and one is based on the underwater milieu of SpongeBob Squarepants. The sites will feature games, avatars and social networking features and operate under hybrid business models with ad-supported free sections as well as paid subscription options.

Meanwhile Paramount’s popular Facebook application VooZoo is launching in MTV Networks’ vMTV virtual world and on Makena Technologies’ There.com site sometime in Q2. VooZoo enables users to send video clips for $1 each from Paramount movies called “Voohoos,” representing distinctive emotions represented by memorable one-liners from flicks like Footloose, Flashdance and Zoolander. MTV will introduce its own clips of pop cultural moments through the VooZoo app.

CBSSports.com is expecting big numbers from this weekend’s March Madness match-ups. This year is the first time the site will provide simulcast coverage of the tournament’s Final Four games. More than 4.3 million visitors have watched games so far this year, up from 1.7 million last year.

Billboard.com launched a Spanish-language complement BillboardenEspanol.com featuring news, features, charts, reviews, video streams and blog coverage of the Spanish music scene.

The first episode of season 3 of MOJO’s Three Sheets, a comedic travelogue following liquor connoisseur Zane Lamprey in his search for the world’s best alcohol, is now available online  exclusively on Hulu.com, a week before its on-air premiere.

The HD wars continue. Verizon rolled out its HD VOD product to 8 more states where FiOS TV is available; New York and Oregon will be the latest additions in the coming weeks. Verizon hopes to have 1,000 HD VOD titles by the end of the year. Not to be outdone, Time Warner Cable in New York and New Jersey is poised to up its HD offering to include 100 HD channels and more than 250 HD on demand choices by the end of 2008.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Sports-themed news & social networking site Yardbarker (old-school slang for a home run) raised $5 million from Draper Fisher Jurveston and a group of angel investors.

       
Call for Content:  Bebo is now accepting entires to its Share Your Dream video contest co-sponsored by YouthNoise, awarding $500 to those who best represent the principal of taking action in their communities. The contest was launched to promote the Case Foundation’s Make it Your Own Awards grant program.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega spoke fondly of Google’s Android mobile operating system at the CTIA show in Las Vegas yesterday, the first major carrier to express interest in the platform.

Liberty Media purchased an additional 78.3 million shares in DirecTV, increasing its ownership stake to about 48% of the company.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Google helped assuage antitrust concerns by announcing it would put search marketing and optimization firm Performics on the block, acquired as part of the DoubleClick deal. Rumors are now churning that the search giant’s next order of business may be to acquire travel site Expedia and eBay’s Skype.

Like OMG! Unilever‘s Degree Deodorant recruited singer and Disney’s High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale for a user generated online campaign. From April 1 through May 26, fans can visit DegreeGirl.com to catch up on Ashley’s latest news, share their own OMG! moments via video or post their stories to the online blog form. Users can also enter Degree Girl’s Ultimate OMG! Contest where teens have the opportunity to meet Ashley herself.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~


About 9% of all broadcast and cable TV show viewing occurred online last year, according to a new study by The Convergence Consulting Group, yet online ad spending accounted for only 2% of what was spent around these shows. The group is more than bullish about how much online viewing of shows will increase in the coming years, ramping up to 14% of all viewing this year, 19% in 2009 and 23% in 2010.

Apple let it be known that iTunes eclipsed WalMart to become the #1 music retailer in the U.S., citing data from the NPD Group, with over 50 million users and over 4 billion songs sold.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
LIN TV named William J. Gaffney as Regional Interactive Director for the East Coast Region. He will report directly to Robb Richter, VP/Internet for LIN.

Ian Rogers, Yahoo’s VP/Video and Music Applications, is leaving the company to launch his own start-up.


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Building a successful video property on the web seems to be all about identifying a niche audience and delivering useful, entertaining content to that audience on regular basis. Comedy sites draw the eyeballs, sure, but they’re not targeted enough to build and identify an audience which advertisers feel comfortable spending real dollars to get in front of. Case in point is DadLabs, a funny show about fatherhood created by a group of dads in Austin, TX and distributed by online production outfit ForYourImagination. The show just wrapped its second 4-show/week season and has quietly built an audience of about 600,000 on various outlets including YouTube, Yahoo and blip.tv, according to ForYourImagination CEO Paul Kontonis. Better yet, DadLabs is generating sponsorship revenue of about $25,000/month and is on track to break even next month. The list of online shows that actually turn a profit is very short indeed.
