Good morning. It’s Friday, April 26, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Tide came out of the 2013 NFL Draft as a winner, thanks to its early selection of top pick Eric Fisher and his mom for an endorsement deal to promote the brand. Top overall pick Fisher anchors Tide’s “About Your Colors” campaign, where he will join other NFL rookies to connect with his new team’s fans on Twitter using #AboutOurColors.
Meanwhile, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the future of the Pro Bowl. “It has a future as long as we do it with quality,” he told Chris Berman on ESPN. “That’s what I’ve talked to several players about and several of them are embarrassed by the way the game is played a couple years ago. There clearly was a much better effort. I give all the credit to those players in doing that but we now have to continue to evolve that, we can’t fall back. We’ve got to continue to play the game where we’re proud of it. We talked to the players about some very interesting changes, whether it’s the selection continues with the players, the coaches and the fans and then maybe the teams are divided up maybe by two coaches or two players. That’s another interesting angle we’re looking at.”
The College Football Playoff slate is official, with the first two semifinal games-the Rose and Sugar-will be played on Jan. 1 at 5:30 and 8:30p for the 2014-15 season. Meanwhile, the Cotton Bowl will also be on New Year’s Day, while the Orange, Chick-fil-A Peach and Fiesta will be held on New Year’s Eve 2014. Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas was awarded the College Football Playoff’s first national championship game, to be held Jan. 12, 2015. The next year will see the semifinals (played by the Cotton and Orange) held on New Year’s Eve, along with the newly-dubbed Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, while the other three bowls will be on New Year’s Day.
CBS is set to debut the one-hour documentary Mayweather on Saturday at 8p. The special will examine the life of undefeated eight-time world boxing champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather and his rival, six-time world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. The special runs a week before the Showtime PPV on Saturday, May 4. The special is narrated by LL Cool J and features his new song We’re The Greatest, featuring Eddie Van Halen.
Baseball may be looking for a return to the Olympics, but MLB isn’t changing its schedule to help boost the sport’s chances. While IOC President Jacques Rogge told the AP that baseball should make its top athletes available, Commissioner Bud Selig noted that the timing was impractical, stating, “We can’t stop our season in August,” and adding “Do I wish I could? Yes. But is it practical? No.”
WWE announced that WrestleMania 29,which was held Sunday, April 7 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, drew over $72 million, to mark the highest grossing event in company history. PPV buys will once again beat the 1 million global mark. New Orleans, Louisiana will be the site of next year’s WrestleMania, which will take place Sunday, April 6, 2014.
Comcast SportsNet Houston is being offered for free to satellite, cable and telco providers across a five-state region as part of a 37-day trial. During that period, which started yesterday, the channel will offer, HD coverage of the Rockets first-round NBA Playoff games vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder, including pregame and postgame coverage, live news and analysis; Houston Dynamo matches and the Astros first Intra League series match-ups vs. the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and more.
IMG College and Cox Media Group’s ESPN580 Orlando agreed to a multi-year broadcast deal to broadcast of all Florida State University football games and the Jimbo Fisher Call-In Show. Select FSU basketball games will also be featured on the ESPN-affiliated station. In addition to Orlando, the station reaches into Lakeland, Melbourne, and parts of Daytona with games kicking off when FSU visits Pittsburgh on Labor Day night, Sept. 2.
