Numerous reports peg Jimmy Fallon to take over the NBC Late Night hosting gig starting 2009, as Conan O’Brien moves to host the Tonight Show following Jay Leno’s retirement from the late night gig.  NBC is expected to make a full-out announcement of the late night shifts at their May 12 upfront presentation in New York, tho now that the news is out, the official word may come sooner.

CBS drama Criminal Minds has found two new homes in national syndication. A&E secured the exclusive cable rights to the series from CBS Television Distribution, airing it as a strip starting September 2009. In the meantime, A&E will air episodes from the first three seasons once a week. In addition, ION Media Networks, Inc. made its own content pact with CBS Television Distribution for the exclusive weekday broadcast syndication rights to the series. ION plans to air the show in primetime next year.

In a new twist on the home renovation show genre, CMT debuts Mobile Home Disaster on May 16 at 9p. With host comedian John Caparulo, the eight one-hour episode show gives families much-needed makeovers of their houses on wheels.

If you’ve heard rumors that NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice is considering bringing in OJ Simpson as one of the players, you’ve heard wrong. NBC says it has never considered OJ.  Yes, OJ and Trump spoke earlier this week, but nobody saying what they talked about, only that the idea of OJ being on the show was never considered by either Trump or the network.

American Public Television (APT), programming distributor to public television stations nationwide, has released a number of new programs for broadcast on public television analog stations starting this May. Highlights of the series include:

  • Katie Brown Workshop III – Katie and team offer more gardening, cooking and decorating ideas; 26 half-hour eps; releases May 3

  • Rochester International Jazz Festival II – jazz and blues musicians perform at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY; 6 one-hour eps; releases May 4;
  • Mexico – One Plate at a Time With Rick Bayless VI –  chef and restaurateur Rick Bayless creates Mexican feasts from start to finish; 13 half-hour eps in hi-def

CBS Corporation purchased International Outdoor Advertising Group, known as IOA, considered the top out-of-home advertising company in South America. IOA represents more than 17,000 faces in most populated areas which are Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. The transaction price was $110 million in cash. In addition to South America, CBS Outdoor International does business in Europe and Asia.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Mark Burnett Productions and the History Channel are partnering on a new historical series titled Expedition: Stanley and Livingstone. Five explorers, with expertise in their respective fields, will retrace the steps journalist Henry Morton Stanley took to find Dr. David Livingstone in Africa, using only a compass, the map and journal from the original quest. Production is scheduled to begin this fall in Tanzania, Africa with a premiere date TBA for 2009.

NBC’s Nashville Star reality competition series which debuts June 9 at 930p added songwriter/producer Jeffrey Steele as judge/mentor joining previously announced Jewel and John Rich.

Tricia Helfer joins season two of USA Network’s Burn Notice appearing on multiple episodes as Carla, the woman who might be able to unlock Michael’s (Jeffrey Donovan) “burn notice.” The series is produced by Fox Television Studios and Fuse Entertainment.

Nick Lachey, actor/singer/songwriter was selected to host the summer reality competition series Disney’s High School Musical: Summer Session (wt). The series is slated to debut on ABC July 20 at 8p and will air Sundays and Mondays for three weeks, then just on Mondays at 8p through mid-September. Open casting calls for talent will be held this Sunday at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, CA and May 7 at Champion Stadium in Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: As Microsoft‘s self-imposed Saturday deadline approaches, CFO Chris Liddell reiterated the company’s position that it is ready to take its offer to buy Yahoo for $44.6 billion directly to shareholders. Microsoft reported that net income fell 11% during Q1 to $4.38 billion. But online and entertainment services and devices proved to be bright spots – up 40% and 68% respectively from a year ago. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Middle-earthlings, Hobbits, Elves, Orcs, and others, take note.  Guillermo del Toro will direct the movie adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit and its sequel (no title yet), it was announced yesterday by the movie’s executive producers Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema’s Fran Walsh.  Del Toro will relocate to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his Wingnut Films and WETA production teams on the two movies, which will be shot back-to-back.  The sequel, will tell the story of the 60-year period between The Hobbit and the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring.  New Line is overseeing development and will manage the production of The Hobbit and its sequel, which are being co-produced and co-financed by New Line Cinema and MGM, with Warner Brothers distributing domestically and MGM distributing internationally.  “Never laugh at live dragons.” Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: U.K.-based RDF Media received a buyout offer from a consortium that seems to include several of its management execs, possibly counting RDF CEO David Frank.  Mention of the proposal sent shares up by over 33%.  The next move is for RDF’s indie directors to evaluate and accept/decline the offer to take the company private. Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX held steady Wednesday night at 5.6/15 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX took the lead at 8p as ‘Til Death and Back to You averaged a 2.5/7, just inching past CBS’ Big Brother at 2.4/7. There was no doubt about which show took first place at 9p as FOX with American Idol tallied an 8.6/21. The Law & Order episode on NBC won the 10p time slot at 3.7/10.

After just 10 months in her new post, Lisa Judson is leaving as head of Warner Bros. Animation in LA with plans to move back to NYC.  Responsibilities will shift now to Peter Roth, Pres/Warner Bros. Television.

Chris Webber, five-time NBA All-Star player, joined Turner Sports as an NBA Playoff Contributor. His appearances will include in-studio coverage on TNT, a weekly hosting gig for the broadband series TNT Overtime via NBA.com plus appear on NBA TV through the postseason NBA season.

Symmetricom, Inc. recruited long-time cable executive David Nicholas to the position of VP/Sales for the cable division. David, in turn, tapped John Quesenbury for the sales team.

SNY, the TV home of the Mets, hired former MLB All-Star player Harold Reynolds as an Analyst for its baseball coverage. Harold will team with Lee Mazzilli and Matt Yallof for Mets pre- and post-game shows. He will also continue his analyst position with MLB.com.

TVN Entertainment appointed Sandra Bourbeau as Director/Affiliate Marketing, reporting to Amy Kan, VP/Marketing, TVN Entertainment. Previously, Sandra was Account Director for Scripps Networks in the Affiliate Sales and Marketing division where she supervised the 15-state Western region.

Jerry Leo advanced to the new position of SVP/Program Strategy and Acquisitions with Bravo. In his new role, Jerry will be involved with long-range planning across all platforms including acquisitions. Jerry will also continue leading program planning and scheduling for the network.
