Cynopsis: Kids!

04/23/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 23, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney EMEA acquires the new CGI animated preschool series The Hive (26×21 or 78×7) for global satellite broadcast on Playhouse Disney across 150 countries.  Produced by UK-based The Hive Enterprises, the series is distributed by Bejuba, and is being produced by Lupus Films, Monumental Productions, and DQ Entertainment International.  Under this multi-territory broadcast deal, The Hive will debut beginning in early 2011 on Playhouse Disney channels in France, Germany (GSA), Italy, Spain, Southeast Asia, Korea, Japan, India, Latin America, Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.  Space Enterprises is handling the worldwide licensing for the property.  Space has already completed license deals for The Hive, including with Aykroyds TDP (nightwear/underwear) and Blues Clothing (kid’s apparel), and is seeking further partners in a range of categories such as toys and publishing.  In the UK, The Hive will premiere this fall on GMTV’s preschool-aimed Fluffy Club weekend programming block.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Sony shifts the release of its live-action movie The Green Hornet from the coveted holiday release position of December 22, 2010, to Martin Luther King weekend, on January 14, 2011, per Variety.  Directed by Michel Gondry, the movie stars Seth Rogen and will now be released as a 3D movie.  The report indicates that the move may have been due at least in part to negative buzz on the movie over the last few weeks, while the studio says that shift was the result of deciding to give the movie a 3D release and a desire to debut away from other 3D movie releases.  Disney’s Tron: Legacy and Warner Bros.’ Yogi Bear, both 3D pictures, release December 17.

MORE KIDS STUFF

David Arquette joins the cast of Disney Television Animation‘s upcoming interactive preschool series Jake and the Never Land Pirates, which follows the adventures of Captain Hook and Smee, and a crew of kid pirates led by the courageous Jake.  Arquette will lend his voice to Skully, the lookout pirate parrot that helps Jake thwart Captain Hook’s plans.  Additionally, tween actress Ariel Winter (Modern Family) will voice the recurring role of Marina the mermaid.  The series will premiere on Playhouse Disney-branded blocks and channels around the world in 2011.

Sesame Workshop is working with the Government of Chile to support and help kids and families cope with the aftereffects following the recent earthquake in Chile.  Sesame Workshop has partnered with JUNJI, which is affiliated with Chile’s Ministry of Education and responsible for early childhood education there, UNICEF-Chile, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Televisa to create a series of four Public Service Announcements (PSA) featuring the Muppets of Plaza Sesamo and Chilean Soap Opera star Christian de la Fuente.  The PSAs will offer young kids information that will help them communicate how they are feeling following the earthquake, as well as providing parents/caregivers with tips to help reassure and help kids feel safe.  The PSAs will be distributed across various platforms including public and private TV channels including Canal 13, UCTV and TVN, as well as on local websites and DVD with support from the Chilean Government, UNICEF-Chile and Sesame Workshop’s local broadcast partner Canal 4 la Red.

The UK’s Five and Fiver acquires the free-to-air and digital TV rights to the kid-targeted, mixed live-action CGI series K-9 (20×30), a spin-off of the popular Doctor Who series, from Park Entertainment.  The series debuted on earlier this month in the UK and Europe on Disney XD and also airs on Network Ten (Australia).  K9 will debut on Five during holiday 2010.

MEG unveils plans to expand its In My Pocket franchise, which includes the new animated HD TV series Puppy in My Pocket Adventures in Pocketville (52×13).  Last week at MIPTV 2010, Mondo TV Group‘s sales team introduced and began signing pre-sales deals in EMEA for the new series, which is set to debut in late 2010 in Italy, rolling out elsewhere in 2011.  MEG and Giochi Preziosi, co-producers with Mondo TV on the series, will manage the licensing efforts for the new TV series. Giochi Preziosi will manage Europe (excluding the UK), with MEG, in conjunction with its merchandising agent Licensing Works, overseeing the other territories.  New TV series licensees will join classic Puppy In My Pocket licensees, including newly signed Scholastic Books, Bakery Craft, NTD, Senario, Cadaco, Wiesner and Redan.

MARKETING/LICENSING

E1 Entertainment unveils plans for the first Peppa Big World, a branded theme park environment based on the Peppa Pig preschool property, which will debut in the UK at the family-targeted Paultons Park on Easter 2011.  Peppa Pig World will feature seven new themed rides inspired by the animated series, including the Peppa Pig family car, Miss Rabbit’s helicopter, Grandpa Pig’s train, George’s dinosaur, a Balloon ride, Danny Dog’s car, George’s boat and a ride that travels the clouds around Windy Castle.  The attraction will also feature an series themed outdoor and indoor play areas, as well as a Peppa Pig shop, the latter offering a range of products including products exclusive to this location.  Paultons Park is located in New Forest, Hampshire.

BBC Worldwide sings a deal with Brecrest as the first licensee for the preschool property Wibbly Pig.  Brecrest will develop/produce a line of apparel based on the brand for babies/preschoolers 0-3 years old, including daywear, nightwear, bodysuits and accessories, in the UK.  The line will make its initial debut via Sainsbury TU label for fall/winter 2010, and will then rollout to other UK retailers for spring/summer 2011.  Based on the book of the same name, the Wibbly Pig TV series is produced by Wish Films and currently airs daily on CBeebies.

Looking to help kids develop and make healthy lifestyle choices, Matchbox, a division of Mattel, and Michael Epstein Sports Productions (MESP) are partnering for the Adventure Kids national race series.  Adventure Kids is a four-race series that features a 100-yard mud run dash for K4-6, and a mile of obstacle-filled and muddy race for Kids/Tweens 7-13.  Each event follows the Merrell Down & Dirty National Mud Run Series.  The Adventure Kids race series will debut at the Los Angeles Merrell Down & Dirty Mud Run on April 25, in Castaic, CA.  In conjunction with the race, Matchbox is will debut a new special edition car for Adventure Kids.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Cartoon Network grows its licensing division with the appointment of Ilissa Howard to the newly created position of Director/North and South Asia, Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and Asia Pacific Product Development.  Based in Hong Kong, Howard will be for the overall CNE business in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, South Asia and Taiwan, as well as heading up product development efforts.  Howard will report directly to Dulce Lim-Chen, VP/CNE Asia Pacific.  Previously she served as Global Brand Director for Toys R Us, and prior to that as Global Toys Manager at Disney and Mattel/Fisher-Price.

MEG names Patrick Enright to lead MEG Sales group.  He will help with the company’s transition from the distribution agreement with Jakks, which expires at the end of 2010.  Most recently, Enright served as VP/Sales and Marketing, Dream International, a plush manufacturer and Disney licensee.  He was previously EVP/Sales, Stravina Operating Company and President and COO, Tomy Corporation.

It is home to the first Legoland, a 10-hectare theme park built from plastic Lego blocks, and is Denmark’s most-visited attraction outside of Copenhagen. The most elaborate reconstruction at Legoland is the three-million-block Port of Copenhagen exhibit, which features electronically controlled ships, trains, and cranes.
