Cynopsis: Kids!
04/01/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 1, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Sony Pictures Animation picks up the feature film rights to Janet Foxley‘s kid’s book Muncle Trogg.  The preemptive deal is Michelle Raimo-Kouyate’s first acquisition since being appointed President/Production, Sony Pictures Animation.  Muncle Trogg will developed as an animated feature film with Jane Startz (Ella Enchanted, Tuck Everlasting, Indian In the Cupboard) serving as executive producer, with Kane Lee, VP/Development of Jane Startz Productions, co-producing.  Muncle Trogg, about a fairytale community living in a volcano, hidden from humans, is published by The Chicken House in the UK and Australia, and will be published by The Chicken House/Scholastic imprint in spring 2012 in The US and Canada.

Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific enters into a multiyear deal with Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA) and Scrawl Studios that provides Turner with the first look rights to new, original productions.  This is the first time that Turner, MDA and Scrawl Studios have teamed to develop, produce and distribute multiplatform comedy and adventure content for Turner’s Cartoon Network across the Asia Pacific regions.

Coolabi and Walker Productions, the production arm of indie publisher Walker Books, enter into a co-development deal for Walker Books’ comedy book series Scream Street.  Walker Productions and Coolabi have jointly picked up the TV, gaming and licensing rights from Scream Street author Tommy Donbavand, and are moving forward to develop a K7-10 targeted animated series based on the books.  The series is slated to begin production in 2012.  Scream Street revolves around Luke Watson, a school kid and reluctant werewolf, who is made to move with his family to Scream Street when the Government Housing of Unusual Lifeforms (G.H.O.U.L.) find out about his hair transformations.  Popular in the UK, the eleventh title in the Scream Street book series, Hunger of the Yeti, is set to debut this month.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

He’s baaack.  No longer governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger heads back into entertainment as a superhero, The Governator, with the help of Marvel legend Stan Lee, in a new animated series and comic book, per EW. Schwarzenegger’s new crime-fighting superhero alter ego is featured on the cover of EW that hits stands today.  The series, which is still in development, features The Governator going up against evildoers, like the Gangsters Imposters Racketeers Liars & Irredeemable Ex-cons (aka G.I.R.L.I.E. Men) and taking refuge in a secret lair, described by Lee as a “secret high-tech crime-fighting center under his house in Brentwood.”  The series will also include appearances by Schwarzenegger’s wife, Maria Shriver and his kids.  More details about The Governator project, which is also a collaboration with producer Andy Heyward, is set to be announced on Monday at MIPTV in Cannes.

MORE KIDS STUFF

4Kids Entertainment addresses the lawsuit filed against it by Asatsu-DK (ADK) and TV Tokyo Corporation, together the Licensors of Yu-Gi-Oh!, which also included the Licensors termination of their deal with 4Kids for the property, in its 2010 year end results issued yesterday afternoon.  The Licensors’ lawsuit, filed after an audit of 4Kids, alleges that 4Kids breached the contract for the Yu-Gi-Oh! series, including deals for DVD licensing in the US and various royalty issues, and owes the Licensors some $4.7 million.  4Kids says, “The purported termination letter did not comply with the 10 business day notice and cure provision in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Agreement.”  Furthermore, Michael Goldstein interim Chairman of the Board of 4Kids Entertainment stated: “The Company [4Kids Entertainment] believes that the claims made by ADK in its lawsuit are baseless and its attempt to terminate the agreement invalid.  4Kids will vigorously oppose the attempted termination of the Yu-Gi-Oh! agreement and the audit claims. If the matter is not settled, 4Kids will, regretfully, be seeking to recover the full measure of damages from Licensors for wrongfully terminating the Yu-Gi-Oh! Agreement and causing significant injury to the business of 4Kids.”

American Greetings Properties gives the go ahead for a second season of its Strawberry Shortcake CGI animated series, Berry Bitty Adventures.  The new season, (comprised of 13 new episodes) will welcome a new character with musical abilities and will debut in fall 2011. The preschool series debuted on The Hub in October 2010.

Cake completes a number of new international program sales for Coolabi‘s animated preschool series Poppy Cat (52×11).  Based on the books by Lara Jones, the series will make its worldwide premiere on Nick Jr UK in May 2011.  The newest deals for the series include those with Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, e-vision (U.A.E), SVT (Sweden), S4C (Wales), EBS Korea, OKTO Singapore and MiniMini Poland.  These pacts follow on the heels of deals with Nickelodeon Australia, TVO (Canada), Knowledge Network (Canada), NRK (Norway), and RTE (Ireland).  Cake is handling distribution of Poppy Cat and will feature the series at MIPTV, along with its other properties The Sparticle Mystery, Eliot Kid 2, Oscar’s Oasis and Tom & the Slice of Bread With Strawberry Jam & Honey.

Shaftesbury Sales Company inks several new broadcast deals for Shaftesbury‘s Vacation with Derek (1×90), the made-for-TV movie follow-up to the Life with Derek (70×30) TV series.  Vacation with Derek is acquired by: Disney Germany, Disney Italy, Disney Latin America and Disney Japan; Nickelodeon New Zealand; VRT (Belgium) and Noga in Israel. Daro will represent the movie in Central and Eastern Europe and English-speaking Africa. Vacation with Derek debuted on Nickelodeon Australia and Family Channel (Canada) in June 2010, and then on Starz Entertainment’ skids & Family channel last month.

Skechers Entertainment takes its Zevo-3 series to broadcasters across Europe and the Middle East, with the series being acquired by Nickelodeon (Italy), Canal Panda/Panda Biggs (Portugal), ATV (Turkey), QTV Channel (Ukraine), Orlando Kids (Albania/Bosnia/Herzegovina/Croatia/Kosovo/Macedonia/Serbia/Montenegro/Slovenia), and MBC (Middle East).  Additionally, the DVD rights to the property have been picked up by Hitlab (Russia and the Ukraine).  Zevo-3 is a Skechers Entertainment production in association with Moonscoop. The series currently airs on Nicktoons in the US.  Moonscoop handles the international sales for Zevo-3, which will feature it at MIPTV next week.

In other Skechers Entertainment news, the company will launch Twinkle Toes (1×72), its new 2D animated dance and music direct-to-DVD movie, at MIPTV.  Targeted to K6-11, the movie revolves around Grace Hastings (14), a great dancer who must overcome her stage fright to help save her high school for the performing arts.  The voice cast for the title includes Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men), and Corbin Bleu (High School Musical).  Twinkle Toes is produced by Skechers Entertainment in association with Crescent Moon Entertainment.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific bolsters its creative team with the appointment of animator Yoshiya Ayugai to the newly created position of Executive Producer, Animation.  Based in Hong Kong, Ayugai will be responsible for production of original kid-targeted animated content, and supervise creative for shorts, series, and long-from productions.  Ayugai will report to Silas Hickey.  He previously toiled in executive creative positions for Disney in the US and Japan, as well as a producer for Cartoon Productions Japan.
