Good morning, it’s Friday, April 16, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The Great Recession is over – for Google at least. The search advertising giant exceeded analysts’ forecasts on Thursday, reporting Q1 net income of $1.96 billion, up 37% from Q1 a year ago. The company registered sales of $6.77 billion, an increase of 23% from a year ago. Paid clicks on AdSense partner sites grew by 15% while the average cost-per-click rose by 7%. Investors were apparently expecting even rosier results, however, driving share prices down by more than 4% in after-hours trading.
History is working with popular geolocation-powered social networking service Foursquare to promote the premier of the special series America The Story of Us. Users who visit various sites with historical significance in one of 19 major cities can “check in” using Foursquare to receive a factoid about the place on their mobile device as well as enter a sweepstakes. (Prizes, to be handed out weekly from April 25-June 6, include a 1935 edition of Monopoly.) The 12-part America series premieres April 25.

The number of mobile gamers in the U.S. actually declined in 2009 by 13% – mostly due to less play by non-smartphone users, according to ComScore. Smartphone subscribers are three times more likely than feature phone subscribers to play games on their device at least once a month. They are more than five times as likely to play games almost every day. Puzzle games proved to be the most popular genre, followed by card games then word or number games.
