Good morning. It’s Friday, April 12, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
NBC Sports made it official, announcing that NBC Sports Live Extra, the company’s live streaming product for digital, mobile and tablets, has launched live streaming NBC Sports Network live-event content to Cablevision, Comcast Xfinity TV, Suddenlink and Verizon FiOS customers via TV Everywhere. Content will include the remainder of the NHL regular season, the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Final; Premier League and Major League Soccer matches; Formula One and IndyCar races; horse racing that surrounds the Triple Crown; and more. Combined NBC, NBC Sports Network and Golf Channel content is expected to top 4,000 hours and 1,000 programs/events in 2013.
ESPN revealed its commentator lineup for the 2013 NFL Draft presented by Bud Light, which marks its 34th consecutive year of televising the event. The three-day telecast runs April 25-27 on ESPN with the first two nights airing in primetime. Chris Berman hosts Thursday night coverage where he will be joined by Mel Kiper, Jr. along with Jon Gruden. Chris Mortensen and NFL Insider Adam Schefter report from an addition set while Suzy Kolber conducts interviews on-site. Days 2 and 3 will feature Trey Wingo hosting, with Trent Dilfer, Kiper and Todd McShay. Kolber co-hosts 10 hours of NFL Draft coverage on Saturday from Bristol. Overall, ESPN offers up 28 live hours of the draft and surrounding programming on those three days.
MLB laid out plans to honor Jackie Robinson with a league-wide tribute and programming surrounding Jackie Robinson Day. On April 15, all players will once again wear number 42 with clubs hosting on-field ceremonies at ballparks as well as youth-focused events and a special celebration featuring the Robinson family at Dodger Stadium. MLB Network will air a special episode of Studio 42 with Bob Costas on Saturday at 4p featuring Dodgers Legend Don Newcombe and the stars of “42,” Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford.
Around the dial on Bounce TV, the channel will honor also the baseball legend with the premiere of The Jackie Robinson Story, starring Robinson himself, on Sunday, April 14 at 10p.
The NBC Sports Group inked a deal to continue airing the annual Bayou Classic over a Thanksgiving weekend through 2015. The game, pitting Southern University and Grambling State University, has been carried by NBC Sports since 1991.
Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel returns to HBO on Tuesday, April 16 at 10p with segments that include a look at a group of rabid, politicized soccer fans in Egypt known as the Ultras; a collaboration with Sports Illustrated about the first woman on a Sprint Cup crew, Christmas Abbott; and a talk with Florida Marlins president David Samson about the new ballpark.
NBC Sports Network and World Series of Fighting are deepening ties beyond live events with a new series, World Series of Fighting: Future Champs, that spotlights MMA action from some of the sport’s rising stars. The series debuts Saturday at 7p, featuring the three-round, 160-pound catchweight fight between Ozzy Dugulubgov (4-1) of Hackensack, NJ and Chris Wade (5-1) of Lindenhurst, NY.
For the first time in 20 years, the PBR is opening its video vault with “PBR 20-20,” which will air on RDF-TV starting May 1 and looks at the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series’ Top 20 moments, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the PBR. Content has been restored for broadcast, and includes footage not been seen outside the PBR vault since it first aired some 20 years ago.
The Phoenix Coyotes are on the upswing in local ratings, with game on Fox Sports Arizona up 118% over last season’s average, according to local reports. Contests are drawing a 0.9 compared to 0.4, with an average of 16,223 household viewers.
The Los Angeles Clippers announced a partnership with radio stations KWRM AM1370 and FM105.9 HD2 to carry the team’s remaining regular season and playoff games in Chinese (Mandarin).

The NHL and NHLPA entered a partnership with the You Can Play Project in a move designed to make the NHL “the most inclusive professional sports league in the world.” The You Can Play Project promotes equality in sports, and the initiative will include training and counseling on LGBT issues, as well as PSAs. “Our motto is ‘Hockey Is For Everyone,’ and our partnership with You Can Play certifies that position in a clear and unequivocal way,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “While we believe that our actions in the past have shown our support for the LGBT community, we are delighted to reaffirm through this joint venture with the NHL Players’ Association that the official policy of the NHL is one of inclusion on the ice, in our locker rooms and in the stands.”
The NBA is launching its post-season campaign, running its first Playoff “Now is BIG” spot on TNT last night featuring LeBron James. The spot, “We Are All Watching: LeBron,” showcases fan reactions around the world to LeBron James’ spectacular play during Game 7of the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals when he made a steal with time winding down and partnered with Wade for an alley-oop.
USA Wrestling and Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc. are bringing together three unlikely allies when the US, Russia and Iran join together in solidarity to compete in a wrestling event set for in Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal in NY on Wednesday, May 15. The Rumble On The Rails will be a showcase competition as part of World Wrestling Month, which was declared by the international wrestling federation FILA with an eye to keep the sport in the Olympics.
North American Sports Group inked a five year extension with Disney Sports as a national sanctioning partner for the Disney 3v3 Soccer Championships held at the ESPN Sports Complex in January. In addition, the organization announces the 24th annual Kick It 3v3 Soccer Tour presented by GoGo Squeeze, Clif Bars For Kids and Jif To Go that will stop in 65 US markets from May-August.
The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) unveiled the eight ambassadors of its global sport development program, FEI Solidarity, in a move to promote and develop the global equestrian disciplines governed by the FEI. The FEI Solidarity Ambassadors will raise awareness of the FEI Solidarity program by attending media events and visiting equestrian development initiatives around the world.

WWE announced that the company had topped 100 million Facebook fans across its network of pages during Sunday’s WrestleMania 29. CSNChicago.com is offering an online series of webisodes from April through September that goes behind-the-scenes to document “the highs and lows of life in the minor leagues” with the Chicago Cubs Class-A affiliate, the Kane County Cougars. Episodes of The Foundation: The Story of the 2013 Kane County Cougars debut on Tuesday and run on a bi-monthly basis.
