For the third consecutive year, more US adults have no trust at all in the media (36%) than trust it a great deal or fair amount, according to a new Gallup poll. Another 33% of Americans express “not very much” confidence. That’s a big slide from 1972, when Gallup first asked the question – in three readings in the 1970s, trust ranged from 68% to 72%. The news media ranked as the least trusted group among ten US civic and political institutions involved in the democratic process, though the legislative branch of the federal government, consisting of the US Senate and House of Representatives, is rated about as poorly as the media, with 34% trusting it. |

Consumer engagement and estimated TV ad spend increased 6% and 7% respectively across all basketball programming during the 2023-24 seasons, according to EDO’s Basketball TV Outcomes Report. More findings include:
– The WNBA continues to grow. Ad engagement is up 16% year-over-year, and the “Caitlin Clark Effect” is real – ads during Indiana Fever games delivered 3x the impact of those during the rest of the WNBA slate through the regular season.
– NBA star power is highly effective. SoFi ads with Jayson Tatum were 15% more effective than those without him, while Bose ads with Anthony Edwards were 1,236% more effective than the brand’s average.
– In the NCAA, women’s tournament ads were 44% more likely to generate engagement compared to the 2023 edition. For the men’s tournament, ad engagement grew with each round, peaking in the final where ads were 76% more effective than the primetime average.
“The past year has been a watershed across basketball, delivering indelible moments for fans and powerful results for the brands that advertise alongside them,” said Kevin Krim, President & CEO at EDO.
That’s the ticket: YouTube TV averaged 2.07 million global daily active users in September, up from an average 1.25 million in the 11 previous months, according to Guggenheim Securities and Apptopia. The jump comes with football season and the addition of “NFL Sunday Ticket.”
The Federal Trade Commission announced a final “click to cancel” rule that will require sellers to make it as easy for consumers to cancel their enrollment – or subscription to a streaming or cable service – as it was to sign up. “Too often, businesses make people jump through endless hoops just to cancel a subscription,” said Commission Chair Lina M. Khan. “The FTC’s rule will end these tricks and traps, saving Americans time and money. Nobody should be stuck paying for a service they no longer want.” Most of the final rule’s provisions will go into effect 180 days after it is published in the Federal Register.
Omnicom announced that revenue in the third quarter of 2024 increased $304.5 million, or 8.5%, to $3,882.6 million. Organic growth by discipline versus the third quarter of 2023 was 9.4% for Advertising & Media, 35.3% for Experiential, 4.3% for Public Relations, 0.8% for Precision Marketing, and 0.3% for Execution & Support, partially offset by declines of 1.1% for Healthcare, and 5.4% for Branding & Retail Commerce. “Omnicom delivered a strong quarter, with 6.5% organic revenue growth, and 7.9% EBITA growth. We did so while continuing to strengthen our organization by investing in talent, service capabilities, and technology platforms to enhance our client offerings,” said John Wren, Chairman and CEO. “Our cash flow improved, and we continued our very disciplined capital allocation. With exceptional new business wins and exciting new work for our clients, we expect to finish the year with strong momentum.”

A project is underway to bring WildBrain’s Strawberry Shortcake and Cloudco’s Care Bears together in a new, “retro-forward” 44-minute animated preschool special. “The Care Berry Switch” (w/t), is being co-developed by the creative teams at both companies, with WildBrain Studios poised to lead animation production.
Canada’s Sphere Media announced “Dreamers,” the first scripted project to come out of its Kids and Family division. The coming-of-age series is supported by the Bell Slate Fund, a not-for-profit program that supports Canadian production companies in building and diversifying their slates.

In more hoops news, TNT Sports and professional women’s 3-on-3 basketball league Unrivaled reached a multi-year media rights partnership to exclusively present live game coverage on TNT and truTV and stream on Max beginning with the league’s inaugural season, beginning January 17, 2025. The agreement will feature more than 45 primetime regular season matchups three nights a week across TNT Sports platforms, with twice-weekly games on TNT as the lead network on Mondays and Fridays and additional broadcasts on truTV on Saturdays. ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” Week 6 matchup between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets drew 17.3 million viewers, ESPN’s second most-watched MNF Week 6 game in the ESPN era.
NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on October 12 had its most-watched episode in three years, delivering 5.6 million Live+SD viewers. The show also drew 516 million views across social platforms, reports NBCU. The show was hosted by Ariana Grande with Stevie Nicks as musical guest.
