IN THE NEWS |
Points to CBS for having Stephen Colbert, whose show was canceled by the network two months ago, as the first Emmy presenter last night. The late-night host got a standing ovation before asking, “While I have your attention – is anyone hiring? Because I have 200 very qualified candidates who will be available in June.”
Host Nate Bargatze then took to the stage with a novel way to keep acceptance speeches brief: he said was donating $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of America. For every winner whose speech went over 45 seconds, he would subtract $1,000 from that donation per second; winners whose speeches went under 45 seconds would add $1,000 per second to his donation. A running tally let some speech-givers know how they were faring. (“I’ll pay the difference!” said supporting actress winner Hannah Einbinder as she ran down the numbers.) For a list of the evening’s winners, go here.
MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd, fired after his on-air remarks about the horrific assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, responded on Substack. “Right Wing media mob ginned up, went after me on a plethora of platforms, and MSNBC reacted to that mob,” wrote Dowd. “Even though most at MSNBC knew my words were being misconstrued, the timing of my words forgotten (remember I said this before anyone knew Kirk was a target), and that I apologized for any miscommunication on my part, I was terminated by the end of the day.” MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler and Dowd each apologized for the remarks, which Kutler called “inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable.” |
Ego Nwodim has decided not to return to “Saturday Night Live” for its 51st season. “The hardest part of a great party is knowing when to say goodnight,” posted Nwodim, who had been with the show for seven seasons. Other departing cast members include Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, and Emil Wakim. The new party gets started October 4.
Newsmax has refiled its lawsuit against Fox News, accusing the network of running “an exclusionary scheme” to secure and maintain dominance in the US market for right-leaning pay TV news. The complaint argues that Fox’s actions stifle competition, harm consumers, and disadvantage Newsmax. The case was first filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, where Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, dismissed the lawsuit as a “shotgun pleading” but allowed Newsmax until September 11 to amend it. Rather than resubmit in Florida, Newsmax withdrew the suit and refiled a new one in Wisconsin. |
“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” director Jim Hoskinson was a guest on Colbert’s show to say goodbye. “We’ve had many memories,” said Hoskinson. “We mostly had great moments and occasionally we do live shows that [can be hairy] but we have a job where we come in and laugh so it makes the day pretty good.” Hoskinson – who just picked up the show’s first Emmy – told Colbert he’s taking his RV and “heading out.” Associate director Yvonne De Mare has been promoted to the director slot for the show’s final season.
Airport ads yield significant results, according to new Nielsen research commissioned by Clear Outdoor Channel. The study found that among frequent flyers who noticed airport advertising:
– 82% read airport advertisements.
– 61% recalled seeing airport advertisements.
– 57% took action after viewing an ad in an airport, an 8% increase from the 2022 study.
Among those who acted after seeing airport advertising:
– 61% visited the advertised location.
– 53% visited the advertised website.
– 45% scanned a QR code.
– 36% visited the social media site.
“As air travel continues to surge and airports evolve into vibrant commercial hubs creating a sense of place for travelers, this new research affirms what we’ve long known – airport advertising is not only seen, but it also inspires action,” said Morten Gotterup, President, Clear Channel Outdoor, Airports Division. “Now is the time for both local and national advertisers to lean in and capture the attention of this powerful, engaged audience.” |
