Venu, the sports streaming service planned by Disney’s ESPN, Fox Corp. and Warner Bros. Discovery, is not intended as a competitor to cable, according to Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch. At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference on Tuesday, Murdoch said Venu is designed “entirely for the cord-cutters and cord-nevers,” and that it “really cleans up a lot of what’s become complicated or broken in the sports rights environment in the United States.” Venu’s launch was delayed when Fubo was granted a preliminary injunction after filing an antitrust lawsuit.

Disney, embroiled in a carriage dispute that has left its programming dark on DirecTV, offered to provide DirecTV’s customers with a live feed for last night’s presidential debate – an offer DirecTV refused, saying it would cause “customer confusion.” In a blog post, DirecTV said it had agreed to return ABC for the debate if Disney was willing to return all its channels not for three hours, but through the end of “Monday Night Football” on September 17 while the companies worked to reach a new agreement.

Dentsu announced a new initiative, “House of Creators,” to develop the “next generation” of social media creators. The first phase of the initiative is launching on gaming platform Roblox, and includes a manga contest for creators to enter their original worlds, and a Creator Acceleration Program. “The rapid pace of technological advancement has accelerated the democratization of content production and distribution, with games and videos, etc. shared via online games and the metaverse,” said the company. “This is a shift from the past, when only companies with large capital could produce and distribute content, to a new era in which individuals with creative ideas can produce and distribute on their own.”

NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” will have three new cast members when its 50th season premieres on September 28: Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim and Jane Wickline have joined as featured players. Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney and Chloe Troast will not be back.

Captify, provider of real-time audiences and insights, has launched the Captify Election War Room, a weekly data report highlighting consumer search behavior during the 2024 US election cycle. “Unlike traditional polls where biases can emerge, user search offers unprompted, unbiased, and up-to-date insights into what consumers care about most,” said Isaac Gerber, Global Director, Insights & Analytics, Captify. “These insights provide a better look into how consumers approach this election cycle, which can help political strategists tailor their messages to more effectively reach voters or provide them with the information they need to learn more about a candidate or specific issue.”

Havas has acquired UK-based digital, tech and data specialist DMPG. The move is meant to bolster Havas’ existing tech, data and analytics capabilities. DMPG will join the company under Havas Media Network’s data, tech and analytics consultancy CSA; company founder Steve Carrod will continue in the role of Managing Director of DMPG.

WPP also made an acquisition – creative and customer experience agency New Commercial Arts. Founded in 2020, NCA has worked with local and global clients including Sainsbury’s, MoneySuperMarket, Vodafone, Nando’s, Paramount+, Alzheimer’s Society and Cityfibre.

HBO has ordered a comedy series focused on a codependent friend group, starring, written and executive produced by Rachel Sennott (“Shiva Baby”). The pilot was executive produced by Emma Barrie (“Barry”), Aida Rodgers (“Barry”), and Lorene Scafaria (“Succession”), who directed.

Wonderhood Studios is set to produce “The Man Who Definitely Didn’t Steal Hollywood” for BBC Arts. The doc, following the scandal of waiter-turned-mogul Giancarlo Parretti’s purchase of MGM/UA in 1990, is produced in association with Fifth Season.

Dynamic Television has renewed Danish crime series “The Sommerdahl Murders” for season six. Based on Anna Grue’s bestselling book franchise, the drama is a co-production between Dynamic Television, ZDF, ndF, Sequoia Global Alliance, and Danish broadcaster TV2.

STREAMING

As a run up to Halloween, TCLtv+ is launching TCL Horror, offering nearly 80 movie and TV titles leading into October 31. Classic programming includes the “Van Helsing” series, “13 Nights of Elvira,” and cult favorites like “Prom Night.”

Comedy Dynamics has launched The Stand Up Channel on Amazon Freevee. The channel features new and classic stand-up comedy specials.

TECH

LG Ad Solutions is launching Innovation Labs, a division that will focus on developing breakthrough technologies for CTV advertising, content personalization, and hyper-customization for viewers. “From planning and scheduling to segmentation, personalization, delivery, and reporting there are many new technologies at our disposal, which create opportunities to evolve the ad business,” said Chief Technology Officer Dave Rudnick, who is leading the effort. “This is why we created Innovation Labs — to test new strategies and collaborate with companies, startups, and technologies in a simulated ecosystem, enabling us to validate these models before integrating them into our business.”

Imagine Communications announced the integration of xG Linear with Salesforce Media Cloud, enabling customers to leverage expanded media solutions aimed at optimizing linear revenue and accelerating the growth of total TV ad trading. “As the media industry continues to evolve, the combined strengths of Imagine and Salesforce Media Cloud will empower broadcasters and TV operators to maximize profitability in their core linear business through optimization and blend the advertising models of TV and digital to create a new, optimized ad model for CTV,” said Rob Malcolm, GM of Ad Tech, Imagine Communications.

Vistar Media, a provider of technology solutions for out-of-home media, reported its Adstruc traditional OOH planning software is now available to all US customers. Vistar acquired Adstruc from PJX Media in April. “At its core, Adstruc’s software simplifies and expedites the traditional OOH planning process for our buyers alongside our programmatic offerings,” said Raj Lala, VP, US Demand Sales and Development at Vistar Media. “Adstruc, now being a Vistar platform, enables us to offer one of the most advanced planning tools available to the wider OOH ecosystem — making it easier for our customers to focus on running impactful, holistic campaigns in the real world.”

Synamedia has launched Senza, a cloud-based platform that lowers costs and eliminates traditional technology barriers to bring more viewing experiences to TV screens in the home as well as out-of-home. How so? “Senza flips the accepted economics of TV on its head with its Internet-based framework,” said Synamedia CEO Paul Segre. “It eliminates the need for specialist developers supporting a technologically limited and fragmented ecosystem and enables us to think of a TV screen as an Internet greenfield.”

Two days after Mr. Beast released “Men vs Women Survive the Wilderness for $500,000,” the show had racked up 68 million views (among his 314 million subscribers). In it he uses Proto hologram for the first time, beaming from the bottom of a cave in New Zealand to interact in real time with the contestants on the show.

CASTING

Starlings Television Distribution has bolstered the cast of “Sherlock & Daughter,” a new mystery thriller series set to air next year on The CW in the US and Warner Bros. Discovery in the UK and Ireland. Onboard are Fiona Glascott (“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”), Ivana Miličević (“The 100”), Phillip P. Keene (“The Closer”), Antonio Aakeel (“Slow Horses”) and Shashi Rami (“Vikings”).

Also casting up is Paramount+ limited series “JonBenet Ramsay” (wt). Emily Mitchell (“The Apprentice”), Garrett Hedlund (“Tulsa King”), Alison Pill (“Trap”) and Owen Teague (“The Friend”) are onboard to tell the tragic story of the murdered beauty queen.

More people are coming to “The Office” – or whatever Peacock decides to name the mockumentary set in the same universe as NBC’s 2003-2015 hit. Added to the cast are Melvin Gregg (“American Vandal”), Chelsea Frei (“Poker Face”), and Ramona Young (“Santa Clarita Diet”).

Jack Huston (“Boardwalk Empire”) has joined the cast of MGM+ and Prime Video series “Spider-Man Noir” as a series regular.

COMING UP

TLC’s “1000-Lb Sisters” returns Tuesday, October 8 at 9p, and “1000-Lb Best Friends” is back Tuesday, October 22 at 10p. The drama never ends – 1000-lb sister Amy Slaton was in the news earlier this month for allegedly suffering a camel bite at a zoo that led to authorities allegedly finding illegal marijuana and mushrooms “in plain sight,” leading to her arrest.

Documentary “A Case For Love,” inspired by the writings and teachings of Bishop Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church, will debut on TVOD platforms on Tuesday, October 1. The film explores whether or not love, specifically unselfish love, is the solution to the extreme societal and political divide today.

SPORTS REPORT

TNT Sports will serve as the Players Era Festival’s exclusive US broadcast partner, with college basketball games airing on TNT, TBS, truTV and Max. The first edition of the Players Era Festival will take place Thanksgiving Week – November 26, 27 and 30 – at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. “TNT Sports has been at the forefront of the growth of championship-caliber college basketball showcases for more than a decade,” said Raphael Poplock, SVP of Acquisitions, Business Development and Partnerships at TNT Sports. “This space has seen an explosion of interest, and we are excited to collaborate on and present the first-ever Players Era Festival across our platforms which will further enhance fans’ access to thrilling college basketball competition, while also helping to drive opportunities for college athletes.”

“Thursday Night Football” on Prime Video will include a new set of AI-powered innovations called Prime Insights aimed at enhancing the NFL viewing experience. New insights include:
– Pressure Alert, an AI-powered model that tracks defenders attacking the offensive backfield during live action and highlights those that are in position to disrupt the play
– Defensive Vulnerability, using a proprietary machine learning model to analyze defensive and offensive formations, and highlight where the offense will or should attempt to attack
– Coverage ID, using an AI model combined with live player tracking data to identify the defensive scheme (e.g. Zone, Man) for fans in real time before the snap.

Martial arts organization ONE Championship has partnered with “The Beast In Me,” a feature-length MMA action-drama film from Broken Open Pictures that is scheduled to begin filming later this year.

The BBC has commissioned a new version of Seven.One Studios International’s adventure dating format “Stranded on Honeymoon Island.” The new adaptation is set to be produced by CPL Productions, a Seven.One Studios company and will air on UK’s BBC One. This brings the total number of international commissions to seven, 18 months after the show first launched.

The Australian government plans to introduce legislation to block children from social media until they are 16. Age verification technology will be tested soon, with the restriction in place by the end of the year.

Dandelooo has struck a deal with Barcelona-based audiovisual production company Teidees for the animated sitcom “Under The Sofa.” The deal gives Dandelooo exclusive worldwide distribution rights.
