Good morning and welcome to Cynopsis — the media industry’s essential morning read. Today:
· Netflix Thinks Small
· FAST Surges, Metadata Stumbles
· “Avatar” Film Release Date Changes, Again

   IN THE NEWS

Netflix is taking a bite out of short-form video. The streamer is adding more snackable content to its homepage as it looks to claw back viewing time from the likes of YouTube and TikTok and broaden its appeal beyond traditional long-form programming.
· Starting in early August, Netflix subscribers will have access to 3- to 20-minute videos through new licensing deals with publishers including BuzzFeed Studios, Condé Nast, Hearst Communications, Penske Media Corporation and People Inc.
· The lineup will feature content from brands such as Bon Appétit, Cosmopolitan, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Vogue, covering categories including travel, cooking, fashion, celebrity profiles, home and gardening, and viral trends.
· The Takeaway: Netflix is taking cues from social platforms by adding more bite-sized viewing options. The move follows its expansion into video podcasts and vertical short-form content as YouTube continues to gain ground in the living room. According to Nielsen, YouTube accounted for 13.4% of U.S. TV viewing in April 2026, compared with Netflix’s 7.8%.

ABC is defending the news status of “The View.” In a new legal filing, the Disney-owned network pushed back against FCC scrutiny, arguing the daytime talk show qualifies as a “bona fide” news program and is protected from equal opportunity rules.
· ABC cited a 2002 FCC ruling that recognized “The View” as a news program, along with more than 76,000 public comments supporting the show.
· The dispute comes as the FCC examines whether daytime and late-night talk shows should continue receiving exemptions from equal-time requirements. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr launched an investigation into “The View” after an appearance by Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico.“
· The First Amendment does not permit the government to sit in an editor’s chair,” wrote ABC’s legal team, led by Paul Clement. “Yet that is the seat the Commission now proposes to take — deciding which broadcast programs qualify as legitimate news and, for those it finds wanting, compelling them to surrender their airtime to guests they never chose to feature.”

FAST viewing keeps climbing, but metadata is getting in the way. Global hours of viewing (HOV) jumped 55% year-over-year, according to Amagi’s June Airtime Report. Entertainment led with 41% of classified viewing and 40% of ad impressions, while news punched above its weight, generating 27% of viewing but 33% of ad impressions. But on the operational side, metadata remains a major pain point:
· 86% of those surveyed said reformatting metadata for different platforms is their biggest workflow challenge.
· 86% said poor metadata is costing them revenue through weaker discovery, lower ad performance or platform deprioritization.
· 71% said metadata from content owners is often incomplete and getting worse.
· 68% expect AI to handle most metadata generation with minimal oversight within three years.
· The Takeaway: As FAST audiences and ad inventory grow, metadata is becoming a competitive advantage. Companies are increasingly betting on AI to automate the process, but the bigger challenge may be aligning to platform-specific standards that continue to fragment the ecosystem.

“Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender” arrives on Paramount+ on Saturday, July 25, earlier than expected after bypassing its planned October theatrical release for streaming. The streaming debut was also moved up from a fall window. The shift follows the film’s online leak in April, which may have influenced the accelerated rollout.

Actress, writer and performance art teacher Louise Lasser died July 6 at age 87. Lasser was best known for her leading role in soap opera satire “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” the syndicated series produced by Norman Lear that aired weekdays in 1976 and 1977.

Retail media just got a little more connected. Pacvue and Ace Hardware’s RedVest Media are teaming up to give brands a simpler way to activate, optimize and measure campaigns across the retail media landscape. The integration brings RedVest Media into Pacvue’s commerce operating system, allowing advertisers to manage Ace Hardware campaigns alongside other major retail media networks. Brands can now:
· Run RedVest Media campaigns alongside buys on Amazon, Walmart and other retail platforms.
· See Ace Hardware performance alongside other retailers through unified reporting.
· Streamline campaign operations with automation and fewer manual processes.
· The Takeaway: As retail media moves beyond a handful of walled gardens, the next competitive advantage may not just be the quality of a retailer’s audience data — it’s how easily brands can access, optimize and compare those audiences across platforms. Integrations like this signal a shift toward a more unified retail media marketplace, where interoperability could become a key driver of advertiser adoption.

Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: SVU”) will host the 78th Emmy Awards, set for Monday, September 14 on NBC and Peacock. “Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career,” said Hargitay, the ceremony’s first female host since Jane Lynch in 2011. “It’s my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards — in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC — and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers.”

MovieMe is flipping the streaming script with a pay-per-minute model designed to give creators a more direct path to revenue — no subscriptions, no traditional ad model.
· The platform, which launched Tuesday, lets users purchase bundles of viewing time — 100, 500 or 1,000 minutes — that can be used to watch any content available on MovieMe.
· Creators earn revenue based on the actual time viewers spend watching their content, rather than clicks, views or ad impressions.
· MovieMe gives creators 70% of per-minute earnings, creating a direct link between audience engagement and creator revenue.
· The company says the model is designed to reward quality storytelling and sustained viewer attention while offering creators a more predictable path to monetization.
· “The creator economy is one of the most remarkable cultural shifts of the last two decades — but the economics have never worked for the people actually making the content,” said Bhavesh Joshi. “At MovieMe, we believe creators should be rewarded based on genuine attention, not just algorithms or advertising.”
· The Big Picture: As creators continue to seek alternatives to platform-driven algorithms and unpredictable ad revenue, MovieMe is betting that a direct audience-payment model can create a more sustainable business for independent storytellers — while giving viewers more control over how they consume content.

   PRODUCTION

JuVee Productions has inked a first-look deal with Universal Global Television. The company, founded by Viola Davis and Julius Tennon, already has romantic drama series “Pawn,” based on the short story by Kennedy Ryan, in the works.

Geena Davis is the star and executive producer of “Dorothea,” a true crime drama in development at HBO. The project is inspired by the story of notorious serial killer Dorothea Puente.

Silverlining Rights and Emporium Productions have teamed up on the four-part docuseries “RIchard E. Grant’s Very Modern Odyssey” for Channel 4. Silverlining secured co-production financing from CBC (Canada) and presales to SBS (Australia), HRT (Croatia), Prima Group (Czech Republic), BBC UKTV (New Zealand) and Cosmote (Greece).

   SPORTS REPORT

Padel meets prediction markets. The Pro Padel League (PPL) has teamed up with Kalshi in a multiyear deal that makes Kalshi the league’s Official Prediction Market Partner.
· Fans can now trade on PPL game outcomes while accessing activations like pro clinics, giveaways and other fan experiences.
· The deal builds on Kalshi’s sponsorship of the 2025 PPL City’s Cup Final, which featured live odds integrations, in-venue branding and digital placements.
· The Business Play: Prediction markets are moving beyond traditional sports betting audiences and into emerging sports fandom. For PPL, the partnership adds a new layer of engagement around a fast-growing global sport, while Kalshi gains access to a younger, digitally native fan base looking for more interactive ways to participate.

Professional sports’ long-running reliance on taxpayer subsidies came under scrutiny during a Ways and Means Committee hearing focused on federal tax policy and the business of sports.
· Members from both parties criticized the use of tax-exempt municipal bonds and other public incentives to help fund billion-dollar stadium projects, arguing that the economic benefits often fail to match the cost to local taxpayers.
· The hearing also highlighted growing fan frustration with the cost of live sports. According to a YouGov poll cited by the committee, 67% of fans say attending games is unaffordable, while 86% view it as a luxury experience.
· House Republicans have proposed limiting tax deductions for professional sports franchises under the House-passed version of the Working Families Tax Cuts, including caps on deductions tied to intangible assets such as player contracts, broadcast rights and team goodwill.
· The committee also examined the changing landscape of college athletics, with lawmakers emphasizing the need for student-athletes to better understand financial literacy and tax obligations in the era of name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation.
· The hearing pointed to recent NFL stadium disputes involving the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs as examples of how franchise relocations can leave communities carrying costs while teams pursue more favorable deals.
· The Bottom Line: As sports franchises continue to reach record valuations, lawmakers are increasingly questioning whether public funding models for stadiums deliver enough value for taxpayers and fans.

Yahoo Sports and Inside Lacrosse have launched a new hub for lacrosse news and analysis. Available on the Yahoo Sports website, the hub features coverage of high school, collegiate, and professional lacrosse.
