Twelve news organizations are pushing Joe Biden and Donald Trump to commit to presidential debates. “If there is one thing Americans can agree on during this polarized time, it is that the stakes of this election are exceptionally high,” said organizations including ABC, CBS, C-Span, CNN, Fox News, NBCU, NewsNation, PBS, NBC, NPR, The Associated Press and USA Today in a joint statement. “Amidst that backdrop, there is simply no substitute for the candidates debating with each other, and before the American people, their visions for the future of our nation.” Biden said last month that the decision to debate depends on Trump’s behavior, while Trump’s camp has said he would debate “anytime, anyplace and anywhere.”

NBCUniversal has launched personalized broadcast experiences through its NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) over-the-air channels on NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations in New York, LA, Philadelphia and Miami. Features include the ability to restart programs when joined in progress; hyper-localized elements integrated into “Today”; and access to personalized weather information. The experience also provides expanded and enhanced access to content, including clips, full episodes and alternate programming from NBC and Telemundo’s local and national news, sports and entertainment shows and events. “The launch of this innovative experience is a considerable milestone for broadcast television and demonstrates the immense potential and possibilities NextGen TV has for viewers, programmers, stations and advertisers,” said Shawn Makhijani, SVP of Business Development and Strategy & NBC Spot On, NBCUniversal Advertising & Partnerships.

Linear TV makes up 85% if total CTV inventory for long-form content, according to data from Bernstein Research. The company projects CTV ad inventory will grow 3% in the first quarter of this year, due to the expansion of AVOD and FAST channels, while cord cutting will help push linear inventory down 6% year-over-year.

Syndicated talk show “Tamron Hall” has been renewed for season six, with ABC Owned Television Stations and broadcast groups including Hearst, Scripps, Nexstar, Tegna, Gray and AMG onboard the talker. Season to date, the show is delivering 8.9 billion minutes viewed across linear television with total viewers, and ranks third out of the nine one-hour syndicated talkers.

“Suits” will make its broadcast television debut on MyNetwork TV this fall, where it will be offered on free television for the first time. The legal drama premiered on USA Network in 2011, and has since experienced a resurgence following its Netflix debut. “Suits” is distributed to broadcast television by NBCUniversal Syndication Studios.

CIMM and TVB announced a new initiative focused on showcasing the latest innovations in measurement and currency development, new metrics, and data collaboration across the local TV and video marketplace. “The local TV and video market is being transformed by a wave of innovation and investment, as buyers and sellers look for new ways of planning, targeting, measuring, buying and evaluating local campaigns. Sophisticated TV platforms, connected devices, big TV datasets, artificial intelligence and machine learning are being deployed to deliver real improvements,” said Jon Watts, Managing Director, CIMM. To support the study, CIMM and TVB are issuing a call to the industry to identify and submit innovation case studies that illustrate developments underway across the local TV marketplace.

ABC has renewed “The Rookie” for a seventh season. Season six of the drama premiered to an audience of 11.92 million total viewers across linear and digital platforms after 35 days of viewing, according to Nielsen, up 14% from its season 5 average viewership.

CBS has ordered daytime drama “The Gates” to series, set to premiere in January 2025. The show, written by Emmy-winning soap opera veteran Michele Val Jean, will follow the lives of a wealthy Black family in a gated community. Developed as a joint venture between CBS studios and the NAACP, it appears the show will replace “The Talk,” wrapping its 15th and final season in December.

The Africa Channel Inc. is partnering with free streaming service BLKFAM, founded by digital media veteran Larry Adams, and launched in February 2024 with equity partner Whoopi Goldberg. The two Black-owned media companies are collaborating on co-branded content, distribution, marketing, promotion and ad sales. In an alliance that aims to provide authentic representation of the diverse voices and experiences of Black communities, across several traditional television and streaming platforms. Additionally, The Africa Channel and BLKFAM will collaborate on future offerings to open new doors for Black creators, writers, directors, and actors, including a new FAST channel for BLKFAM that The Africa Channel will help program and manage.

Lifetime greenlit a new Ripped from the Headlines movie. “Yoga Teacher Killer: The Kaitlin Armstrong Story,” starring real-life couple Caity Lotz (“The Flash”) and Kyle Schmid (“Big Sky”), based on actual events, tells the tale of a tangled love triangle gone very wrong. The movie is set to debut as part of the network’s summer slate.

Apple TV+ gave a series order for three-part docuseries “Hollywood Con Queen,” from filmmaker Chris Smith (“Tiger King”). Based on the original reporting of investigative journalist Scott Johnson, the series explores the story behind one of Hollywood’s biggest scams. Debut date: Wednesday, May 8.

Don Johnson will star opposite Joshua Jackson in ABC drama “Dr. Odyssey,” from 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television. The series is written and executive produced by Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken.

USA Network ordered unscripted series “The Anonymous” from Studio Lambert (“The Traitors”). In the social strategy competition, contestants can interact in person, or behind a mask of anonymity.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott help struggling property investors in new HGTV series “Backed By The Bros,” premiering Wednesday, June 5 at 9p.

A new season of Telemundo’s “Top Chef VIP” kicks off Tuesday, May 21 at 7p. Up for grabs is $200,000.

V-me TV, a network catering to the US Hispanic audience, announced the launch of its new prime time lineup. Series including “Borgen,” “Carmen Curlers,” “The Killing,” and “Legacy,” premiering throughout April.

DraftKings Network will debut a new weekly women’s sports show, “Good Follow,” on Friday, June 7. Hosted by content creator Megan Reyes, the series combines news elements and pre-produced segments.

“The Fishmonger” returns to Outdoor Channel on Monday, May 6 at 9:30p, during the network’s “Taste of the Wild” programming block.

Interactive entertainment company ROXi announced partnerships with major US Broadcasters and a collaboration with Pearl TV to roll out interactive TV channels that leverage ROXI’s FastStream technology for NextGen TV. The new FastStream powered Interactive TV Channels allow viewers to pause, fast forward and rewind, jump to a program segment with their remote, and start at a beginning of a program when they turn on the channel, without downloading an app. “These new Interactive TV Channels are exactly what the younger consumers want from their media experiences,” said ROXi CEO Rob Lewis. “They’ve grown up with YouTube or Tik Tok in their pocket and expect to be able to start a programme at any time, and skip any segment they’re not interested in, even on Broadcast TV at home.

Brightcove has launched its new player platforms for Roku, Samsung and LG Smart TVs. The launch of the new Software Development Kits (SDKs) has unlocked advanced features within Brightcove’s player framework, including content protection, monetization, and analytics reporting capabilities.

Telemundo and Universo will present more than 315 hours of live competitions and daily recap specials for the Summer Games, with at least 6 hours of daytime coverage and up to 12 hours of programming on soccer days. In addition, Telemundo will present a two-hour recap show highlighting the best Olympic stories of the day, every weekday at 12a beginning Friday, July 26 through Sunday, August 11.
