CBS is sticking with the Golden Globes. The net signed a five-year deal with Dick Clark Productions for the show, which will air next in January 2025. This year’s telecast – CBS’ first Globes since 1982 – averaged 9.96 million viewers in Live+7, a 50% spike from last year’s low on NBC. “CBS’ collaboration with the Globes for this year’s broadcast was a big win for both of us and established strong momentum for awards shows in 2024. The Globes is a one-of a-kind live event that adds another marquee special and valuable promotional platform to CBS’ annual calendar,” said George Cheeks, President and CEO of CBS. The agreement also includes another Dick Clark Production show, the “American Music Awards,” which last aired in 2022 on ABC.
Analyst Brian Wieser forecasts an expansion of the US ad economy to 5.6% this year, up from the 4.3% he projected in September 2023, and up from his 5.2% November 2023 forecast. Why the improvement? “GDP forecasts for 2024 in real terms were up by nearly a percentage point in February vs. November in the Philadelphia Federal Reserve’s most recent Survey of Professional Forecasters’ release, with implied nominal GDP expectations approaching 5% for 2024 vs. closer to 4% previously,” wrote Wieser in his Madison and Wall newsletter. The forecast does not include political ad spending in the US, which is projected to add as much as $11 billion to the ad economy.
X’s lawsuit against a watchdog organization that published a study about hate speech on the platform was thrown out by US District Court judge Charles Breyer. The judge said the motivation behind the suit was to punish the Center for Countering Digital Hate for being critical of X, and “perhaps in order to dissuade others who might wish to engage in such criticism.” X said it plans to appeal.
Apple TV + ordered a second season of “The Last Thing He Told Me,” with Jennifer Garner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Angourie Rice and David Morse set to reprise their roles in the thriller from 20th Television and Hello Sunshine. The sophomore run will be based on the sequel to the Laura Dave bestseller. “The audience response to Laura Dave’s gorgeous novel and Jen Garner’s stunning performance in the series was so gratifying for all of us at Hello Sunshine,” said Reese Witherspoon. “We can’t wait to dive in and see what’s in store for Hannah Hall in Season 2.”
Also coming back for season two is BET+ drama “Haus of Vicious.” Tami Roman reprises her role as a fashion designer whose success is overshadowed by her dysfunctional personal life. “We aim to bring even more twists, turns, and high-impact storytelling to the lives of the characters that viewers have come to know,” said Roman, also an EP on the show. “We want to creatively showcase the journey from dysfunction to healing, no matter how convoluted the road may be.”
With the contract between SAG-AFTRA and producers for reality, variety and game shows expiring June 30, the union is holding meetings starting this month before formal proposals for the Network Television Code are presented. Singers were summoned for today’s event, while a call for dancers is slated for Thursday. |

Peacock handed a straight-to-series order of the romantic dramedy “The Miniature Wife,” starring and executive produced by Elizabeth Banks (“Pitch Perfect”) and Matthew Macfadyen (“Succession”). Based on the short story written by Manuel Gonzalez, the series examines the power imbalances between spouses who battle each other for supremacy after a technological accident induces a relationship crisis.
Season three of HBO’s “Euphoria” is coming, but not anytime soon, as creator Sam Levinson continues to craft the drama’s next chapter – and the show’s stars field new offers. “HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” said the network said in a statement explaining the delay. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”

“The Interrogation Tapes: A Special Edition of 20/20,” a true-crime docuseries looking at criminal cases through the lens of interrogations, premieres Monday, April 1 at 10p.
Food Network’s “Supermarket Stakeout” returns Wednesday, May 29 at 9p with an all-star four-part Judges’ Tournament. In each episode hosted by Alex Guarnaschelli, chefs square off in themed cooking rounds outside a real-life supermarket in a parking lot pop-up kitchen that has everything but a pantry.

The European Commission is investigating Apple, Meta and Google over digital rules compliance. “Apple’s measures, including the design of the web browser choice screen, may be preventing users from truly exercising their choice of services within the Apple ecosystem,” said the Commission, while Meta’s “pay or consent” model for social media “may not provide a real alternative in case users do not consent,” the Commission said. It will also look at whether Google’s display of search results favors its own specialized search services over rivals. Companies can be fined up to 10% of their global annual turnover if it is determined they are breaking the rules.
Comcast Advertising’s AudienceXpress division has struck a deal to work with iSpot and evaluate how iSpot’s syndicated national TV ratings can best be incorporated into the AudienceXpress platform. “We hope that by working with them, we can help further push the boundaries on new innovations and possibilities in the measurement and currency space,” said Stuart Schwartzapfel, EVP, Media Partnerships at iSpot. AudienceXpress will continue to work with DRMetrix and 605, both recent iSpot acquisitions.
The BBC used generative AI to promote “Doctor Who,” and it didn’t go over well. After receiving complaints about text used for two promotional emails and mobile notifications, the BCC said, “We have no plans to do this again to promote ‘Doctor Who.’”

The Chicago Blackhawks and NBC Sports Chicago announced a collaboration with the NHL for a family-oriented local animated real-time sports telecast. The alternate presentation will take place on Saturday, April 6 at 2:30p (CT), airing on NBC Sports Chicago Plus (NBCSCH+) as the Chicago Blackhawks face off against the Dallas Stars. Game day coverage on NBCSCH+ gets underway with a special edition of Blackhawks Pregame Live at 2p.
