The Federal Communications Commission ruled that Nexstar Media Group’s ties to business partner Mission Broadcasting violates the FCC’s reach limit on station ownership. The FCC hit the companies with a $1.2 million fine, in addition to ordering the sale of WPIX-TV New York or other stations to come into compliance with ownership limits. Nexstar Chairman and CEO Perry Sook isn’t buying it. “We believe the FCC has been misled by the often distracting noise in the media ecosphere and that it has completely misjudged the facts,” responded Sook. “Nexstar believes that joint operating, shared service, and local marketing agreements like those in which it is engaged are vitally important to maintain a competitive media marketplace and to enable broadcasters to continue investing in local news, investigative journalism, and other services that they uniquely provide to the communities in which they are located.”

Former RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has joined NBC News as a political analyst. The appointment of the one-time ardent Donald Trump supporter “represents an ongoing commitment to featuring a variety of voices who can offer firsthand insight on today’s politics,” said the network. McDaniel’s first appearance in the new role was on Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” for an interview that had been booked, according to moderator Kristen Welker, before it was announced that McDaniel would be joining the network. After a sometimes contentious discussion, Chuck Todd told Welker, “I think our bosses owe you an apology for putting you in this situation.”

SAG-AFTRA members overwhelmingly approved a new three-year contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for TV animation. The new deal includes provisions for AI, including describing voice actors as “only humans,” and establishes mandatory meetings to discuss the tracking the use of digital replicas. Color Duncan Crabtree-Ireland thrilled about the strike-free process. “We were able to ride the wave of our strike victory to secure a better deal for members,” said SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator. “That momentum paid off in terms of substantial wage increases, more than $3 million in back pay, two new holidays and the first SAG-AFTRA animation voiceover contract with artificial intelligence protections and gains.”

Actors aren’t the only people concerned about AI. Asked about their perceptions of AI in search and advertising, 43% of respondents to a survey from Intango either viewed it positively or somewhat positively, with 37% expressing reservations about their search history being used to shape ad content. When asked about their receptivity to AI-driven personalized ad content, 45% of participants acknowledged the benefits of such personalization, but 27% showed a preference for non-AI personalized ads. “It is evident that while there’s an appreciation for and curiosity about the enhanced experiences that AI-driven personalization can offer, consumers do have privacy concerns,” said Uri Lichter, CEO of Intango. “It’s crucial for us in the adtech industry to navigate these concerns thoughtfully.”

Add former Disney Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner to the industry heavyweights backing current CEO Bob Iger in Nelson Peltz’s fight to secure two seats on Disney’s board. “Bringing in someone who doesn’t have experience in the company or the industry to disrupt Bob and his eventual successor is playing not only with fire but earthquakes and hurricanes as well,” posted Eisner, who ran Disney from 1984 to 2005, on social media. “The company is now in excellent hands and Disney shareholders should vote for the Disney slate.” Eisner joins “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, the families of Roy Disney and Walt Disney, and Laurene Powell Jobs among those supporting Iger.

Nickelodeon canceled “Erin & Aaron” after one season. The comedy series followed stepsiblings with a shared passion for music.

Disney Channel greenlit “Wizards” (w/t), a continuation of 2007-12 comedy “Wizards of Waverly Place.” From Disney Branded Television, the new series begins production next month in LA and is slated to premiere later this year on Disney Channel and Disney+. The series reunites Selena Gomez and David Henrie as Alex and Justin Russo, who also serve as executive producers.

Rockmond Dunbar is back in acting again. Fired from Fox’s “9-1-1” for not complying with the studio’s vaccine mandate, Dunbar has joined the recurring cast of Peacock’s “The Million Dollar Heist,” starring and executive produced by Kevin Hart. Dunbar, whose request for medical and religious exemptions for the vaccine were denied, filed a $1 million lawsuit against Disney in a case expected to go to trial.

STREAMING

Paramount+’s simulcast of the Super Bowl generated 3.4 million signups, according to Antenna – and many subscribers stuck around after the game. While users could take advantage of a free trial, 65% of those who subscribed were still signed up at the end of February. “While some may assume a majority of users who sign-up around tentpole events (like big NFL games) will quickly cancel, this isn’t borne out in the data,” noted Antenna in a blog post.

Independent outdoor lifestyle producers and brands will have access to an IP to manage, package and distribute their original content through Outdoor America. The proprietary IP will enable short-form creators and brands to reach audience exposure on Outdoor America’s FAST and broadcast TV distribution.
