Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 6, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
On the eve of the Olympics, streamer-of-broadcast-TV Aereo has been forced to turn away customers in two cities. Last week the service said it was out of capacity in New York and could accept no more subscribers; now reports say the same is true in Atlanta. The company has not specified the nature of its capacity issue but on Monday, announced a February 19 launch date for San Antonio.
Twitter released its Q4 Earnings Report yesterday, announcing the site had reached 241 million average monthly users, with 184 million coming from mobile devices. Advertising revenue hit $220 million in Q4, with mobile ads accounting for 75 percent of total ad revenue.
In an earnings call Wednesday, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes acknowledged that while Netflix has more U.S. subscribers than HBO – 29.9 million to 28.5 million – that’s without throwing sister net Cinemax in the mix. That would add up to 43 million domestic subscribers, and 130 million overseas (Netflix has 44 million subscribers globally). Bewkes also pointed out HBO makes more money – $1.79 billion in operating income versus Netflix’s $228.3 million in 2013, and has added 2 million subs in 2013, the most in 17 years.
Hulu will include a YouTube original from the channel Geek and Sundry: a new series called Caper about three “immortals” and their human roommate. Caper’s nine episodes will premiere on the YT channel on Feb. 12, with the first two available on Hulu.TubeFilterreports that more of Geek and Sundry’s content, like Written by a Kid, TableTop, The Flog and Outlands, will get a similar Hulu treatment…
… Speaking of Hulu, CBS has signed a non-exclusive content licensing agreement with Hulu Plus for four seasons of Blue Bloods starting later this year. The company had already struck deals with WGN for basic cable and ION for weekday, primetime syndication rights for the drama, averaging 14 million viewers in its fourth season, up 7 percent versus last year.
Conde Nast Entertainment added a new digital channel to its video network for Self Magazine. The eighth channel for its digital network will include four new series: Girl vs. Sweat, 5 Ways To…, Which Is Worse… and Burn 100. The videos will be available on the magazine’s site, YouTube channel, AOL platforms and DailyMotion.
Hearst‘s Seventeen magazine debuted a new multi-channel network and updated YouTube channel yesterday, in partnership with AwesomenessTV. The new channel will include original series Seventeen Daily, Beauty Smarties, DIY Your Life, Fashion Remix, What’s In My Fridge? Promposals, Hot Guy Showdown, Seventeen on the Scene and Seventeen Stars.
ABC News Digital launched an interactive bracket, The Best Oscar Movie From The Past 64 Years, for fans to vote for through Facebook, Twitter and ABCNews.com. Voting will close Feb. 27, and the winning film will be announced on ABC News on Feb. 28. JCPenney is the exclusive launch sponsor. The Oscars air March 2 on ABC.
YouTube has started to audit video views as a way to weed out fraudulent views. Previously, YT would only remove the spam numbers only after reporting.
NBC News has redesigned its site. It now features continuously scrolling videos and a mobile-friendly design. In a note to staff, NBC News’ President Deborah Turness wrote, “The new site doesn’t feel like TV content chopped up for the web – it’s born of a seamless collaboration between TV and digital.”
