Netflix plans to raise $400 million to expand into Europe and fund more original projects. The service says it will spend around $3 billion on original content this year ($6.2 billion over the next three years), and $500 million on marketing. At the end of 2013, Netflix had 10.93 million European subscribers. The company has plenty of room to grow: Western Europe has 134 million broadband homes compared to the U.S.’s 88 million, according to SNL Kagan research.
Turner Broadcasting announced a round of changes for Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang. Cartoon Network will bring new original online content to CartoonNetwork.com and its other digital platforms. Adult Swim will start airing an hour earlier (from 8pm-6am) starting on March 31, and classic cartoon network Boomerang will go ad-supported.
Microsoft and Adobe announced a deal to stream the entire NBC 2014 Winter Olympics from the cloud. Viewers who pay for the Windows Azure Media Services can stream all 1,000 hours of competition from compatible mobile devices.
Entertainment information company TMS and smart-device tech company UUX have teamed up to provide TMS’ On Entertainment guide platform to its Latin American customers.
Recent Golden Globe winner Robin Wright confirmed that Netflix’s House of Cards is returning for a third season. At a press conference yesterday for the show’s second season debut, Wright said that filming will begin “soon.” All 13 episodes of House of Cards season two will hit Netflix on Feb. 14.
The production company behind Iron Chef, Fujisankei, launched a new male-fashion and makeover YouTube series, Cute Him Up. The show currently has six episodes available to watch, and the first episode has been viewed 148,865 times.

Facebook celebrated the big 1-0 yesterday, and commemorated the anniversary by giving users a “look back” video feature, On his timeline, Mark Zuckerberg reflected on the past ten years (and $7.87 billion) and wrote, “One question I ask myself is: why were we the ones to build this? We were just students. We had way fewer resources than big companies. If they had focused on this problem, they could have done it. The only answer I can think of is: we just cared more.”

Google released the Google Cast SDK for its Chromecast device. Now app builders can incorporate Chromecast support into new apps and websites, which will also allow users to put content from any app or site on their TV screen. Currently, Chromecast includes Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus and HBO Go apps.
NBC is aiming to make TV Everywhere easy for Olympics fans. The net announced it’s giving viewers a 30-minute free pass to watch Winter Games video before they’re asked to verify that they’re subscribers. Users will need to download an app (NBCOlympics.com or NBC’s LiveExtra app) for access to over 1000 hours of live-streamed coverage; a video with Ryan Seacrest offers instructions for using the apps.
Fox Sports said the Super Bowl was its most-viewed live stream, with on average 528,000 people tuning in per minute compared to 2013’s 508,000. People also streamed the game for 48 minutes, which is 25 percent more than the previous year. Finally, the app was the most downloaded sports app for iPhone and iPads that day.
Shazam saw plenty of Super Bowl success, too. The game was shazamed more than 700,000 times (twice last year’s numbers), and more than half of those Shazams took place during Bruno Mars‘ halftime show. The top five Shazamed ads were Chevrolet’s “Life,” Jaguar’s “Rendezvous,” Bud Light’s “Cool Twist,” Bank of America‘s U2 ad, and Budweiser’s “A Hero’s Welcome.”
Microsoft officially named Satya Nadella as its new CEO yesterday. Nadella has been working at the company for more than 20 years, and will replace Steve Ballmer. Founder Bill Gates will become Technology Advisor and John Thompson will take over from Gates as Chairman.
AwesomenessTV has named Kelly Day to be the company’s Chief Digital Officer, a new role. Day was most recently Blip Network’s CEO.
Turner Broadcasting promoted Coleman Breland to President of Turner Network Sales. Additionally, Richard Warren has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Negotiations & Strategy and Associate General Counsel, and Jennifer Mirgorod has been named to Executive Vice President of Brand Distribution. Both will report to Breland.
FreemantleMedia North America appointed Sean Hancock as its Vice President of Alternative Programming. Hancock was previously an executive and producer for BBC Entertainment.
App development company Float Left Interactive has hired Gary Delfiner as its new Chief Digital Officer. Delfiner was previously President of Screen Media Digital, the creator of moving streaming site Popcornflix.

Apple debuted a commercial shot in one day entirely with an iPhone as another way to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Macintosh. The 60-second video used 15 camera crews, and edited down 70 hours of footage with a Mac computer to get the final product. The point of the ad: anyone can create this kind of spot with the use of Apple products… but it also helps when Hollywood editor behind Fight Club and The Social Network, Angus Wall, is part of the process, too.
