Sasheer Zamata wasn’t the only talent discovered during Saturday Night Live‘s search for an African-American female cast member. LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones were impressive enough during auditions to be been hired as SNL writers and start Monday, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Zamata’s first on-air appearance on the late-night NBC sketch show is January 18.
Nancy Kerrigan will return to the Olympics as a figure skating analyst for NBC in Sochi. The former Olympian, who won a silver medal in 1994, seven weeks after being attacked with a baton, will also make appearances on other NBCUniversal shows. The Olympics begin Friday, February 6.
Cinemax is posting “character Vines” to promote the season two premiere of drama Banshee. “We shot the Banshee Vines on set with the entire cast, using the app itself,” exec producer Greg Yaitanes tells Cynopsis. “They express the inner thoughts of the characters and will hopefully help engage and excite our viewers.” Season two bows Friday, January 10 at 10p.
The Fashion Police feud may be cooling down. After an official NLRB election, E! said Wednesday it is ready to negotiate with the Writers Guild over the show’s striking writers, who want to be repped by Guild. “We continue to believe that the secret ballot election was vital to protecting the rights of all Fashion Police writers,” E! said in a statement to The Wrap.
The winter premiere of ABC Family‘s Pretty Little Liars was the most-tweeted premiere in U.S. TV history, with more than 1.3 million tweets by nearly 473,000 unique contributors.
A new Super Bowl ad study from Communicus suggests most of the 2013 big game’s premium-priced pitches “failed to deliver” in terms of purchasing behavior, with just one out of five ads actually selling a product. It also noted that some ads, like the Mercedes “Soul” spot, that did not rank as a crowd favorite, built significantly more purchase interest than better-liked commercials.
FX is teaming with barbershops nationwide to get people buzzing about its new animated comedy, Chozen. The event includes free Chozen-inspired hair trims, photo ops and giveaways; show premieres Monday, January 13 at 10:30p.
The latest events added to the lineup for Paleyfest include a Lost: 10th Anniversary Reunion as well as events for Orange Is the New Black, How I Met Your Mother, Parks & Recreation, Sleepy Hollow, Mad Men, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Masters of Sex, The Mindy Project, Community and Veep. Sarah Palin faces the media during the Television Critics Association Winter Tour, at a Sportsman Channel breakfast in Pasadena January 10. The former Alaska governor is the host of the net’s Amazing America with Sarah Palin, premiering in April.

A&E’s Bad Ink comes back for a sophomore season with the “aficionados of terrible tattoos” on a quest to fix the worst ink in Vegas. Sharp Entertainment production returns Monday, January 20 at 9p.
The Real Housewives of New York City are back – and there’s a new diva in town. Model/entrepreneur Kristen Taekman will be introduced in a 30-minute sneak peek of season six on February 24 at 9p, with the series’ official start Tuesday, March 11 at 9p. Original cast member LuAnn De Lesseps was bumped down to recurring status.
Investigation Discovery has sewn up hit series Surviving Evil for a second season, with host Charisma Carpenter (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) again onboard. The Cineflix (I Survived) Inc. production was ID’s number one series for Prime in delivery in 3Q13 among P25-54 (450,000) and W25-54 (292,000).
Encouraged by its seven week run in late 2013, TBS has ordered 13 more eps of late-nighter The Pete Holmes Show, from Conan O’Brien‘s Conaco. New shows launch Monday, February 24, airing Monday through Thursday at midnight, after Conan.
Today‘s Matt Lauer will host a special celebrating the upcoming 71st Annual Golden Globes featuring interviews with stars including Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper and Bryan Cranston. Special airs Friday, January 10 at 8p; the Globes are telecast live on NBC Sunday, January 12 at 8p.
NBC Owned Television Stations are pumping up coverage ahead of the Globes, too. 1st Look: Red Carpet Ready examines fashion trends early evening Saturday; 1st Look: Hollywood’s Biggest Party peeks at plans for the Globes after-bash after SNL. The centerpiece? 1st Look LIVE on the Red Carpet at 6p, leading to NBC’s pre-show coverage at 7p.
Nominees for the 16th Costume Designers Guild Awards were announced Wednesday. Nods went to Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Nashville, Scandal and Saturday Night Live (TV Series); Boardwalk Empire, The Borgias, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones and Mad Men (Fantasy Television series); and American Horror Story: Coven, Behind the Candelabra, Bonnie & Clyde, House of Versace and Phil Spector (Movie or Mini-series). Winners will be announced February 22 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Designating itself “Awards Season Central,” TVGN has partnered with Entertainment Tonight, Popsugar and The Insider to cover the season “from beginning to end,” said Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment and media. The net will air ET red carpet shows for the Grammys and Oscars; Popsugar will create a daily half-hour entertainment series, Popsugar Now, for TVGN airing for 12 weeks beginning Monday, January 13 at 6p, and Insider will continue its cable run with plenty of Globes coverage weekdays at 12:30p.
Garry Marshall (Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy) will receive the 2014 Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award at the Writers Guild Awards at the JW Marriott Los Angeles on February 1. Nominated five times, Marshall won a WGA Award in 1967, for an episode of The Danny Thomas Show.
Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd (Modern Family) came out on top at the Screenwriters Choice Awards Tuesday for TV Comedy, while Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) won for drama. Winners are determined by votes from users of screenwriting software.
The EE British Academy Film Awards will air on BBC America the same day they air in the U.K. Hosted by Stephen Fry, the ceremony will be telecast Stateside Sunday, February 16 at 8p.
Rainn Wilson (The Office) moves from Scranton to Portland for Backstrom, a crime drama he’s set to star in for Fox. Wilson will play a cantankerous detective on the show, based on a book series by Sweden’s Leif G.W. Persson. The show had originally been at CBS, but failed to make it to series.
Travel Channel greenlit production for three original pilots (all wt): Booze Traveler, an exploration of different countries’ cocktails; Great Escapes, featuring landmarks with controversial pasts, and Street Cred, a hidden camera talent show with host Penn Jillette scouring the country for the best street performers.
America Now is on the move in Seattle – the Leeza Gibbons/Bill Rancic-hosted news magazine is shifting timeslots, from 6a to 6:30p weeknights on KONG.
Paternity Court, in 140 stations across the country, boasts it’s the only new strip to help stations grow year-to-year in both Homes (up 10 percent November-to-November) and W24-54 (up 22 percent).
Showtime serial killer drama Dexter will make its basic cable premiere on NUVOtv. All eight seasons of the series will run, uncut, beginning Monday, January 13 at 9p.
CBS announced a licensing agreement with Amazon for upcoming summer series Extant. Amazon Prime Instant Video members will be able to access eps of the series four days after their initial broadcast on the network. “Our partnership with Amazon for Under the Dome helped build a creative, financial and marketing model for event television in the summer,” said Scott Koondel, chief corporate licensing officer, CBS. “We look forward to using the same model for Extant.”
Sons of Anarchy‘s Drea de Matteo has been upped to series regular, reports TVLine. The seventh and final season of the FX drama is set for a fall 2014 launch.
Disgraced ex-congressman and wannabe NYC mayor Anthony Weiner will be in on the joke this time, cameo-ing on the season finale of Amazon Studio‘s Alpha House. CNN‘s Jeffrey Toobin and former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele will also be on hand, as well as Bill Murray, who appeared in the premiere. Finale of the freshman political satire airs Friday, January 10.

The premiere of Utopia, from Dutch reality TV guru John de Mol (The Voice, Big Brother), delivered close to 1.6 million total viewers on Monday to Holland’s SBS 6. The Talpa Media USA “social experiment,” tracking fifteen people who create their own mini-society, achieved a 25.2 percent market share and was the number one show in its time slot in all key demos.
Canadian tween reality series The Next Step, from Temple Street Productions, has been licensed by BBC Worldwide to territories including the U.S. (Hulu), the U.K. (CBBC), Australia (Disney Channel), Italy (Sky Italia) and Croatia (Hrvatska Televizija/HRT). On Canada’s Family Channel, The Next Step ranked number one across specialty stations.
ABC‘s Killer Women debuted DOA Tuesday night, with 3.9 million total viewers and a .9 rating/2 share among A18-49. Lucky 7 was chopped from the timeslot this fall after premiering to 4.4 million viewers and a 1.3 rating.
CBS‘s NCIS scored 20.7 million viewers, its largest audience of the season. In its post-NCIS preview slot, Intelligence hung onto 16.6 million of those viewers at 9p, making it the season’s most-watched debut. The sci-fi action series moves to Mondays at 10p next week.
The season three 9p premiere and 11p repeat of VH1‘s Single Ladies on Monday delivered 3.5 million total viewers. In primetime, the net was number one in cable, excluding sports, among A18-49, W18-49 and W18-34.
Pretty Little Liars‘ Tuesday winter premiere on ABC Family at 8p was Tuesday’s number one telecast in W18-34 (900,000/2.7 rating), viewers 12-34 (2.1 million/2.3) and Females 12-34 (1.8 million/3.9). At 9p, Ravenswood was TV’s top telecast in Females 12-24 (951,000/2.1), and cable’s number one telecast in W18-34 (508,000/1.5).
The Haves and the Have Nots season two premiere on Tuesday delivered 2.8 million total viewers, becoming the most-watched season premiere in OWN history across all key demos. The sudsy drama posted double-digit growth in W25-54 (up 59 percent) and total viewers (up 57 percent) versus the season one premiere in May, and was the number two telecast in OWN history among W25-54, after Oprah’s Next Chapter with Bobbi Kristina in March 2011.
MTV‘s Teen Wolf returned for the second half of season three on Monday for its most-watched telecast ever, delivering 2.4 million total viewers. Its 2.3 rating among P12-34 matched the series high. Follow-up show Wolf Watch held over 60 percent of its lead-in, for a 1.4 P12-34 rating.
Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS drew the most A18-49 viewers with 2.4/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS’s NCIS won the 8p hour with 3.0/8, followed by 2.2/6 for ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The premiere of CBS’s Intelligence took 9p with 2.4/6, versus 1.8/5 for the second hour of NBC’s Biggest Loser. It was a tie for first at 10p between CBS’s Person of Interest and NBC’s Chicago Fire, both with 2.0/6.
