ON THE AIR

Ian Darke is in, and has been named the new lead play-by-play commentator for ESPN during this summer’s 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Darke has served as ESPN’s lead voice for international soccer since 2010, and will call the Brazil vs. Croatia opening match on Thursday, June 12, in Sao Paulo, the final and other matches, including all U.S. Men’s National Team games in the quadrennial tournament (June 12  July 13). In addition to the World Cup, Darke is a contributor for ESPN FC on TV.

Of course, the move means that Martin Tyler, the company’s lead English-language commentator for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, is out. Tyler and ESPN mutually agreed to end their relationship ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The NFL reports that football fans tuned into the 2013 NFL regular season in a major way, with 205 million unique viewers watching games, according to Nielsen numbers. That represents 81% of all television homes as well as 70% of potential viewers in the U.S. Overall, the 2013 NFL Regular Season averaged 17.6 million viewers per game telecast, marking the second most-watched season ever behind the 2010 season with games accounting for 34 of the 35 most-watched TV shows among all programming last fall. For the cherry on top, for the second consecutive year, an NFL game was the week’s most-watched TV show in all 17 weeks of the season.

Speaking of the NFL, the 15 finalists for the 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame class will be announced exclusively on NFL Network tonight at 9p. Andrew Siciliano hosts the one-hour special, Pro Football Hall of Fame: The Final 15 and will be joined by Rod Woodson and NFL Media’s Mike Silver throughout the show. Additionally, Hall of Fame voters Jim Trotter and John McClain, and NFL.com’s Elliot Harrison join to provide their opinions and insight on the final list of 15 candidates. For the first time, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s newest class of enshrinees will be introduced during NFL Honors, which airs Saturday, February 1 at 8p on FOX.

The Iditarod has a new home. Organizers of the famed race locked in a deal with Sportsman Channel, which will serve as the Official Network of the race. Through the agreement, event organizers will produce the annual sled dog spectacle and provide extensive, in-depth coverage, video and updates through an online platform. The Iditarod has not had a national television network partner since 2009. The first of 12 hours of Iditarod Unleashed programming begins March 25 at 7p with a one-hour special “Why Do They Run?” Coverage also will include a two-part documentary on the 2014 event that involves other up-close-and-personal lifestyle stories of the participants and organizers, as well as the history of the iconic event.

BTN will debut the fifth season of The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2014 on Sunday at 9:30p following the Illinois/Northwestern men’s basketball game. The season premiere spotlights former Duke assistant coach Chris Collins, son of Doug Collins, the former head coach of the Chicago Bulls, on his return to the Chicago area to be the head coach at Northwestern, as well as Wisconsin sophomore Sam Dekker and his relationship with his father, who was also his high school coach, and show viewers why Michigan State’s Tom Izzo decided to take his team to the Big Ten Football Championship Game in Indianapolis last December.

With the Australian Open on deck on ESPN2, Keith Olbermann’s late-night show, Olbermann, will temporarily move to 6p from Monday, Jan. 13  Wednesday, Jan. 22. In addition, Olbermann will run as a half hour before returning to its normal 11p one-hour time slot beginning Thursday, Jan. 23.

SiriusXM announced the newest addition to its roster in comedian and former pro soccer player Kevin Flynn, who will host a new show on SiriusXM’s 24/7 soccer channel. Over the Ball will look to blend the worlds of soccer, comedy and entertainment and will debut January 15, airing every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9-11am on SiriusXM FC, channel 94.

Join us on Jan. 30 for our Breakfast of Champions event in NY for a New Year’s lesson on branding 2014. Speakers are set to include Anheuser-Busch’s Blaise D’Sylva, NFL Players Inc. President Keith Gordon, NFL athletes Pierre Garcon and Keith Rivers, Golf Channel’s Frank Nobilo and Leverage Agency/ESPN’s Jay Williams. Click here to register.

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic has announced that Keli Fulton is joining the network as an anchor and reporter for Geico SportsNet Central, as well as contributing to the network’s other news, analysis and entertainment programming. Fulton joins Comcast SportsNet after three years with WPTV-TV (NBC) and WFLX-TV (FOX) in West Palm Beach, Fla.

It looks like longtime Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Chris Wheeler is out after nearly four decades coving the team. In addition, the AP reports that color analyst Gary Matthews won’t return as well. The Phillies said Wheeler and Matthews will continue to work with the organization in other roles.

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

A new Super Bowl ad study from Communicus suggests most of the 2013 big game’s premium-priced pitches “failed to deliver” in terms of purchasing behavior, with just one out of five ads actually selling a product. It also noted that some ads, like the Mercedes “Soul” spot, that did not rank as a crowd favorite, built significantly more purchase interest than better-liked commercials.

NASCAR is shaking up its manufacturer points system for 2014, looking to drive rivalries between auto makers while simplifying the system for fans, competition and the industry. The new points system will mirror the owner championship points structure for all three series with points will be awarded to the single highest finisher for each car manufacturer in each championship event according to the finishing position awarded for each race. Specifically, in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, points will be awarded as follows (43-1, plus bonus points). Points will be awarded in a similar manner in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (43-4, plus bonus points) and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (43-8, plus bonus points).Three additional bonus points will be awarded to the manufacturer that wins the race. The single highest finisher for each manufacturer will receive one additional bonus point for leading a lap, and one additional bonus point for leading the most laps.

CME Group Inc. stuck a deal with the LPGA to sponsor its season-long points race, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. The CME Globe will look to serve as the Tour’s version of the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour, and will award $1 million to the player with the strongest season-long performance, marking the largest single payout in women’s golf.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

NBCOlympics.com, in addition to steaming over 1,000 hours from Sochi, announced that it will offer fans digital-only original programming that will include whip-around competition coverage from Gold Zone; a daily figure skating news and highlights show, Olympic Ice; and regular news updates throughout each day of competition via NBCOlympics.com’s Olympic News Desk updates.

Speaking of the Olympics, YouTube launched a content hub designed to profile Olympic athletes via the Team USA YouTube channel. According to USA Today, the outlet will offer human interest stories and backgrounders of American athletes.

ESPN reports that its BCS Megacast generated 1.2 million unique authors and 4.4 million total tweets on Twitter, up 10% over last year. Of all TV-related tweets that day, the BCS National Championship game accounted for 60% with an additional 1.9 million re-tweets of BCS-related content, 285,000 tweets with the hashtag #BCSchampionship, and more than 240,000 mentions about the Megacast alone, according to Topsy.

ROSTER MOVES

ESPN named Carrie Brzezinski to Vice President of Marketing Solutions, where she will lead all sales marketing for ESPN’s internal creative agency, CreativeWorks, while continuing to manage the sales marketing teams for ESPN The Magazine, espnW, ESPN news and information shows as well as SportsCenter. In 2013, ESPN received the award for Social Media Excellence from Cynopsis for the inaugural year of the Fan Hall of Fame, an initiative led by Brzezinski’s team.

THE MAIN EVENT

Memphis/Louisville on ESPN at 7p.
