Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 8, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
A nail-biting game for the BCS Championship delivered ESPN with the third largest audience of any program in cable television history, averaging 25,572,000 viewers and a US HH 14.4 fast national rating, according to Nielsen. While that was off slightly from year ago numbers, its combined tallies for ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS via the Megacast production delivered 26,061,000 viewers and a 14.8 score. In addition to the television audience, WatchESPN generated 773,000 unique viewers. Still, ESPN is up overall for its five game BCS average, generating 16,549,000 viewers and a 9.4 household score, up 9% and 7% respectively over last year’s quintet of games.
The NBA is at last ending its deal with Ozzie and Dan Silna, who had collected a reported $300 million from the NBA via an agreement the brothers forged as part of the 1976 ABA-NBA merger. The New York Times broke the story, writing that the league will pay out $500 million as part of a new deal that will see the league, as well as the Nuggets, Nets, Spurs and Pacers minimize future financial payments. The deal also will result in the Silnas dropping a lawsuit they filed in federal district court with an eye toward collecting dollars from new revenue streams, like NBA League Pass and foreign TV deals.
Nancy Kerrigan is returning to the Olympics, this time for NBC Olympics for its 2014 Olympic Winter Games coverage in Sochi. Kerrigan will serve as a figure skating analyst for NBC Olympics’ multi-platform coverage, including on NBC and NBCSN. In addition, she will appear on NBCUniversal shows and properties including Today, Access Hollywood and E!
In addition, NBC Sports execs confirmed that this year’s Opening Ceremony will be carried on TV only, and will not be streamed. Variety reports that NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus stated that the ceremonies would need commentary to make sense, and the event was something that families should be able to enjoy together in front of the small screen. Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira and Bob Costas are set to host the event, along with New Yorker editor David Remnick.
Univision reports that its networks’ broadcast of eight Liga MX Opening Season matches ranked as the most-watched weekend of LMX action in almost two years among both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. The LMX season opening match of pitting Santos/Chivas, which aired on Univision Deportes Network on Friday, delivered an average of 513,000 Total Viewers and 371,000 among Adults 18-49, while the Club America/Tigres match, which aired on Univision Network on Saturday delivered 1.1 million Total Viewers and 601,000 Adults 18-49.
