Comcast CEO Brian Roberts had good news for analysts on Tuesday, reporting that the cable company had its first subscriber gain in six years. Roberts attributed the boost to improvements in its digital video and TV Everywhere service, demonstrating innovations like voice-activated remote controls, and TV content sorted by category.

 IN THE NEWS

TiVo announced a new study that found the top binge-watched programs between August-October 13 for its users were Breaking Bad, Castle, NCIS, Law & Order and The Walking Dead. While users binged on Bad and Dead to catch up before the show finales, binging was popular for procedurals, the report surmised, because they “have minimal story arcs… thereby making them easy to follow even if they are viewed out of sequence.”

President Vladimir Putin has increased security in Russia following two deadly bomb attacks in Volgograd. Russian forces in the area are on “combat alert” ahead of the Olympics, reported Itar-tass news agency. Access to Sochi, where the Games will be held, has been severely limited. Olympics coverage starts Sunday, February 2 on NBC.

Time Warner Cable is offering its customers the chance to “party like an A-lister” at NYC’s Time Warner Cable Studios. Events leading up to the Super Bowl feature stars from partner networks (a “Tailgate Experience” with chefs from Food Network‘s Chopped and Showtime sports talent; ASPiRE‘s Ultimate 70s Soul Party with Magic Johnson; FOX Sports 1‘s Super Bash with Erin Andrews and Michael Strahan; a Revolt concert with Drake and net founder Sean “Diddy” Combs). TWC subscribers have a chance to win tickets by following and retweeting @TWC through January 17.

Super Bowl fans will take a break from action on the field to do a little shopping, if H&M has its way. The retailer plans a 30-second spot during the February 2 Fox broadcast that will allow viewers with certain Samsung smart TV’s to purchase items from David Beckham’s Bodywear line, ad tech company Delivery Agent told AdAge. A small pop-up menu will appear while the ad runs, offering the chance to buy items featured.

Several members of the Here Comes Honey Boo Boo clan were in a in a car accident Saturday night, including little Alana and her mom, June. “We are definitely really sore today,’ June said in a statement, “but our top priority is to celebrate Pumpkin’s birthday. She turned 14 today and… we are going to out and celebrate.” Season three of the TLC reality show returns Thursday, January 16 at 9p.

Voting is open for DIY interactive renovation series and sweepstakes, Blog Cabin. Viewers help choose design features for a Craftsman-style bungalow in Florida, then enter for a chance to win the renovated home on Monday, July 28; the show premieres that night at 9:30p. Last year, more than 14 million votes were cast.

Jennifer Hudson has been chosen as the recipient of the People’s Choice Award for “Favorite Humanitarian.” The honor recognizes her work with the Julian D. King Gift Foundation to bring stability to children of all backgrounds. Walgreens, official retail sponsor of the ceremony, will present the award on the telecast, and donate $100,000 to the cause. Show airs on CBS tonight at 9p.

COMING UP

Destination America explores a hazard that’s been making headlines in Sinkholes: Swallowed Alive. “Viewers will get a firsthand look at how terrifying Mother Nature can be,” Marc Etkind, the net’s GM, tells Cynopsis. “No matter where you are in this country – in your home, driving in your car, or even on vacation -anyone can suddenly be swallowed by the Earth.” Special from Spectrum Productions premieres Wednesday, January 15 at 9p.

Add Katy Perry and Lorde to the list of performers at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. They join Robin Thicke, who will perform with Chicago, and Pharrell Williams and Stevie Wonder teaming with Daft Punk for the show airing on CBS Sunday, January 26 at 8p.

Nat Geo‘s Duck Quacks Don’t Echo, putting over-the-top theories to the science test (“Can shrimp run longer than the average human?”) launches Monday, January 13 at 10p.

MTV plays matchmaker on Are You the One?. In the Lighthearted Entertainment reality series, a dating algorithm finds 10 single men and women their “perfect matches,” then transports everyone to Hawaii – without revealing who belongs together. If love isn’t enough to get couples to pair up properly, there’s money: should all pre-determined partners match up, everyone walks away with a cash reward. Series, airing globally, premieres in the U.S. Tuesday, January 21 at 11p.

Stan Lee will make an appearance on ABC‘s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Hollywood Reporter confirmed. Lee has made cameos in numerous Marvel projects, including films Iron Man and The Avengers. S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 8p.

MythBustersJamie Hyneman and Adam Savage face off in a Discovery special, with a brain trust of pre-teens to help them create weapons and forts. The Discovery Studios/BermanBraun production, Dangerous Toys, airs Saturday, January 11 at 9p.

New TNT reality series Private Lives of Nashville Wives is set for a Monday, February 24 at 10p premiere. Tag line: “If you don’t have anything nice to say… come sit by me.”

 RETURNING SERIES

ABC Family has teens tied to the TV this month with winter premieres. Pretty Little Liars and Ravenswood returned Tuesday night, with Switched at Birth and The Fosters launching Monday, January 13 at 8p and 9p, and Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy coming back Wednesday, January 15 at 8p and 8:30p. The net is keeping the kids in suspense for mystery thriller Twisted, returning February 11 at 9p.

Sportsman Channel serves up season four of wilderness series MeatEater, with hunting, fishing and eating adventures in Alaska, British Columbia and Montana – and celeb guests along for the ride. Premiere is Thursday, January 9 at 8p.

FX Networks issued a pilot order for Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, written by and starring Denis Leary (Rescue Me). Leary plays a washed out middle-aged rocker in the comedy, from FX Prods. and Fox Television Studios

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

 
Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, which re-launched arts net Ovation after dropping it at the end of 2012, rolled out Ovation HD in some TWC and BHN systems across the country. “We gained incremental carriage with HD launches in a number of markets,” reported Ovation EVP, content distribution Brad Samuels. “Now, many of our Time Warner Cable and Bright House Network subscribers can watch us in high definition as well.” Ovation HD is available through several operators to about 15 million subscribers.

MSNBC‘s Chris Matthews and CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield will make cameos in the upcoming season of Netflix political drama House of Cards, according to a trailer for the show. Second season will be released Friday, February 14.

RATINGS

Who cares if there’s a wedding? The two-hour season 18 premiere of ABC‘s The Bachelor was up 23 percent versus last year, with 8.9 million total viewers, and up 17 percent among A18-49 (2.7/7), for three-year highs.

A thisclose Florida State/Auburn BCS championship game delivered 25.5 million viewers to EPSN. Online, WatchESPN had 553,000 unique viewers, a 53 percent bump from last year’s live stream.

History‘s Ax Men reached a season-high 2.8 million total viewers at 9p on Sunday, followed by the premiere of reality series The Curse of Oak Island, debuting to strong 2.5 million viewers.

Bravo had its best night ever in all key demos on Sunday. Red-hot Real Housewives of Atlanta earned a franchise high 4.5 million total viewers, and 2.1 rating/6 share in A18-49, topping everything in the demo except Fox’s post-football lineup. Blood, Sweat & Heels followed, scoring 2.5 million viewers and 1.1/3 in A18-49, making it the net’s highest rated premiere ever, and number one in the 9p hour among P18-49.

DIY‘s Rev Run’s Renovation premiere Saturday drew 442,000 total viewers, boosting the time period’s P25-54 rating 62 percent over a year ago, and 31 percent over the prior 13 weeks.

Golf Channel had its most-watched year since its launch 19 years ago. According to Nielsen, the net saw a 14 percent year-over-year increase in total day viewership, which averaged 108,000 per minute in total day for 2013, fifth among sports networks.

Fox Broadcasting Company named Lisa Levenson Senior Vice President and Alex Piper Vice President of Alternative Programming. Levenson had been Executive Vice President of Development at Cineflix Productions; Piper served as Senior Vice President, Alternative Television for Asylum Entertainment.

Digital media management company Yangaroo hired Susan Romanowski as Director, Sales. Previously Romanowski had managed digital sales efforts for Health News Network.

 IN MEMORIAM

Actress/producer Carmen Zapata died from complications of heart failure on January 5. She was 86. In addition to films, Zapata appeared in TV series including Room 222, Kojak and Fantasy Island, and co-founded the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts.

Actress Monica Spear was killed in a highway robbery in Venezuela on January 7. She was 29. Spear appeared in telenovelas including Pasion Prohibida and Mi Prima Ciela. “Monica was not only a great professional,” said Telemundo in a statement, “but also an excellent person.”

Actor Larry D. Mann died on January 6. He was 91. Mann appeared on TV series including Bewitched and Hill Street Blues, and voiced the character of Yukon Cornelius in 1964’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Chinese television pioneer Run Run Shaw died January 7 at age 106. Shaw co-founded Shaw Brothers Studio and later launched Television Broadcast (TVB).
