MSNBC‘s Thomas Roberts will replace Way Too Early host Brian Shactman, whose exit from the news net was announced on Friday. “Thomas’ unique personality and point of view are just the right mix to lead in to Morning Joe,” said MSNBC president Phil Griffin. Roberts, currently host of MSNBC Live at 11a, assumes his new, 5:30a post starting Monday, January 13. Shactman, who stepped in for Willie Geist when Geist joined Today in November 2012, said of his departure, “I don’t want politics to be my only focus.”

 IN THE NEWS

On the heels of announcing that its portfolio of U.S. nets had its best year ever, Discovery Communications announced the extension of its contract with president and CEO David Zaslav through 2019. Since Zaslav joined Discovery as CEO in January 2007, the total number of Discovery networks around the world has grown from 100 to nearly 200. With its channels distributed in more than 220 countries, Discovery is the number one international pay-TV programmer in the world.

Fox Sports will live-stream the Super Bowl, Bruno Mars halftime included – but access to postseason games leading up to the February 2 match-up will require a subscription to a pay-TV provider. CBS is streaming its playoff games for free, as NBC did on Saturday.

NBC aired its first promo for The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Saturday night. The video features snippets of all the hosts since the talker’s 1954 debut with Steve Allen (including Conan O’Brien). Fallon begins his run Monday, February 17.

Vine is growing – users can now “like” and share videos and see their home feed on a new Web version of the video-sharing social net. Full profiles let users browse each other’s catalogues, and a new feature called TV Mode allows them to view Vine videos in sequence, on a full computer screen.

Smithsonian Channel has been added to Time Warner Cable‘s Preferred TV Package, “a major step in the development” of the net, said the channel’s president Tom Hayden. Previously, Smithsonian was accessible only through an additional subscriber fee.

DreamWorks Animation and Fuhu, creator of the Nabi line of kids tablets, will introduce their co-branded DreamTab Tuesday at the Consumer Electronics Show. Unlike previous content deals Fuhu has struck, the DreamWorks partnership includes original exclusive content, like drawing tutorials from top DreamWorks animators. Fuhu CEO Jim Mitchell calls the partnership “the perfect marriage,” telling Cynopsis, “We can cut deals to get [branded] content on our tablets, but we were looking to create content for the tablet from the ground up.” DreamWorks “can put content on Netflix, on Cartoon Network, on Nickelodeon. But they don’t have a TV station; they don’t have a hardware company. We provide a whole ecosystem.” (For much more on the partnership, see Wednesday’s Cynopsis Kids in-depth interview with Mitchell.)

SOAPnet has aired its last cliffhanger. The cable channel focused on daytime dramas launched in 2000, when there were ten broadcast net soap operas on the air (and DVR was not widespread); that number has shrunk to four. Disney planned to replace SOAPnet with Disney Junior a year ago, but facing opposition from diehard soap fans, wound up offering programming for both nets… (cue organ music) until now. SOAPnet signed off December 31.

HGTV‘s New Year’s Day all-day Twitter party, which had fans tweeting along with the home and lifestyle channel’s stars, earned the net its highest-ever social media traffic, exceeding even its best weekly social media performance. On January 1, #HGTVNewYear and #HGTV received more than 26,500 mentions. HGTV also ranked in cable’s top ten Twitter Unique Audience, according to Nielsen SocialGuide.

Nat Geo launched a multiplatform sweepstakes on Sunday tied to the launch of season two of Ultimate Survival Alaska. The winner scores an Alaskan adventure and the chance to meet the show’s cast members. Details on the show’s web site; Survival airs Sundays at 9p.

Tia & Tamera won’t be back for a season four, confirmed T&T star Tamera Mowry-Housley via Twitter. The reality series first aired on Style Network, then ran in repeats on E! and Oxygen. (Style was rebranded as Esquire in September.) On December 31, Mowry-Housley tweeted thanks to her fans, saying the show would not be back.

Kennedy Jr. “Final 24 is a perfect companion to our new hit series Hollywood Scandals,” Steve Cheskin, SVP, Programming, tells Cynopsis. “Both series look far beyond the headlines to tell some of Hollywood’s most fascinating stories.” Scandals airs Fridays at 9p; 24 debuts January 10 at 10p.

The wine-guzzling denizens of Cougar Town are getting some fans tippling, too. Ahead of the sitcom’s season five premiere, TBS has partnered with Pinot’s Palette (“pioneer of the upscale social art and wine experience”) for a promotion that offers viewers a chance to attend painting parties at the franchise’s studios that also involve a taste of the grape, via a code posted on the Cougar Town Facebook page. Comedy returns Tuesday, January 7 at 10p.

 RETURNING SERIES

The crew on Velocity‘s Graveyard Carz is revved up for season three. Mark Worman is a true original whose personality and passion is seen in all of the ‘muscle’ car projects his team takes on,” Bob Scanlon, GM of Velocity, tells Cynopsis. “With his expertise he transforms ‘basket cases’ into ‘brilliant’ automobiles in each and every episode.” Restorations resume Tuesday, January 7 at 9p.

Season six of Investigation Discovery‘s Unusual Suspects, about criminal cases with unlikely culprits, launches with a story of the abduction of a 19-year-old in Reno, Nevada that led to a surprising killer. Premiere is Sunday, January 12 at 9p.

 CASTING

Bonnie Dennison (Third Watch) landed the lead in an untitled Fox pilot created and exec produced by 30 Rock‘s Matt Hubbard and exec produced by Tina Fey, reports Deadline. The Universal TV production focuses is set at a women’s college going co-ed.

RATINGS

National Geographic Channel averaged nearly 500,000 total viewers in primetime in 2013 to make it the net’s most-watched year ever. The launch of Brain Games (premieres averaged over 1.2 million viewers P2+) and the return of Wicked Tuna (976,000 average viewers P2+) contributed to Nat Geo’s success. “Reaching our most-watched year, given the ever-increasing competition, is a great milestone for us,” Heather Moran, EVP, programming & strategy for Nat Geo tells Cynopsis. “We saw our #1 series launch with Brain Games, and had two of our most watched programs as we ventured into original scripted with our films Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy.”

Investigation Discovery had its best year since its 2008 launch for primetime delivery among P2+ (696,000), HH (587,000), P25-54 (313,000), W25-54 (213,000), P18-49 (251,000) and W18-49 (170,000), as well as in Total Day delivery among P2+ (591,000), HH (523,000), P25-54 (287,000), W25-54 (196,000) and W18-49 (160,000).

With an average 189,000 total viewers and74,000 P25-54 in primetime, Nat Geo WILD had its highest rated year ever in key demos, propelled by the return of The Incredible Dr. Pol and the network’s week-long programming event, Big Cat Week.

The 2014 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic delivered a record 8.2 million hockey fans across North America. Over 3.5 million Canadian viewers watched CBC‘s telecast, an event and net record, and NBC‘s broadcast drew 4.4 million average viewers, the second-biggest audience for a regular season NHL game in 39 years.

ABC scored a disappointing .7/2 rating in A18-49 for its debut of The Assets, a limited series keeping the Thursday-at-10p slot warm for Scandal during that drama’s hiatus.

Fox‘s broadcast of the Cotton Bowl won Friday night with a 1.9 rating in A18-49 and 7.2 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen numbers. NBC and ABC tied in the demo for the night with 1.3. An original ep of NBC drama Grimm was up two tenths of a point, to 1.4 in A18-49, tying a repeat of ABC powerhouse Shark Tank.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 2.7/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS took 8p with a 4.1/12 average for Big Bang Theory and The Millers, followed by 1.3/4 for the return of NBC’s Community. CBS’s The Crazy Ones and Two and a Half Men averaged 2.1/6 at 9p to beat the 1.6/4 posted by the first hour of Univision’s Que Vida Me Robo. At 10p, CBS retained the lead with 1.8/5 for Elementary, versus 1.6/4 for the second hour of the Uni soap.
