Yesterday, Facebook delivered quarterly earnings and revenue that surpassed analysts’ expectations. Revenue increased to $2.59 billion from 1.59 billion a year ago. Revenue from advertising came in at $2.34 billion, a 76% increase from a year ago. Mobile ad revenue accounted for about 53% of ad revenue for the fourth quarter. Super Bowl viewers will most likely be using social media, gaming and weather apps simultaneously during the game, according to Soasta‘s Super Bowl Second Screen January study. Of the 2,035 adults surveyed, 1,289 own smartphones or tablets; 53 percent of that group cited social media (specifically Twitter and Facebook) as the most critical mobile service to use while watching the game. Candy Crush and Angry Birds were the apps most referenced from the 27 percent who say they’d watch the game while using an app. Weather apps (16 percent), sports apps (15 percent) and news apps (13 percent) were other top categories.
E! is teaming with Bud Light for Super Bowl party coverage. Internet ad spending grew 32 percent in the first three quarters of 2013 compared to the previous year, according to Nielsen’s Quarterly Global AdView Pulse Report. Yet, even with the growth of web ad budgets, TV continued to take the top spot with 57.6 percent share of all ad spending, investing 4.3 percent more in the platform. Not surprisingly, newspapers (2.2 percent), magazine (1.1 percent) and cinema (1.3 percent) ad spending had the least growth among mediums.
Integral Ad Science released a quarterly media quality report yesterday showing that ad fraud decreased 30 percent in Q4 2012 to 13 percent in Q4 2013. Other findings from the study that reviewed more than two billion impressions each day:
- 66 percent of ads through direct publishers were in view, 50.6 percent of ads placed through networks were in view and 47.4 percent of ads placed through exchanges were in view.
- Direct publishers had the lowest rate of “suspicious activity” at two percent, and Networks had the highest at 15 percent.
