Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 29, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

TODAY booked its ticket to Russia, announcing plans for its coverage of the Sochi Games, with Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Willie Geist and Jenna Bush Hager traveling for microphone duties. Beginning Monday, February 3, Matt Lauer will co-host split editions of TODAY live from Olympic Park and the mountain venues with several Olympians joining him in Sochi. Meredith Vieira and Willie Geist will also be reporting for TODAY during the week. On Monday, February 10, the rest of the crew signs on.

ON THE AIR

Regis Philbin is stepping back from his duties at FOX Sports 1. Sports Illustrated reports that Philbin will take a month off of Crowd Goes Wild in February, before returning with a limited schedule in March. Philbin, of course, has been with the show since FOX Sports 1 launched last year.

Look for new ESPN analyst Tim Tebow to front Good Morning America on Friday, where he will co-host the morning show with the GMA, according to THR. Tebow signed on to Team ESPN in December. Meanwhile, look for Eli Manning to stop by the show today. 

Univision Deportes Network reports that in January, the cable outlet averaged 46,000 Adults 18-49 in primetime, to top both ESPN Deportes and FOX Deportes in the period. In addition, UDN viewership went grew 130% in prime.

Golf Channel’s Big Break announced cast and details for its upcoming Florida edition. The series returns Monday, Feb. 24 with an all-female cast with more than $175,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs, as well as an opportunity to play on the LPGA Tour. Big Break Florida was produced in partnership with VISIT FLORIDA and produced on location at Omni Amelia Island Plantation. Serving as co-hosts for Big Break Florida will be Tom Abbott and Melanie Collins with Collins making her Golf Channel debut as co-host for Big Break.

The 2014 NBA All-Star squads will get rounded out on Thursday when TNT carries the announcement of the All-Star reserves during a special one-hour edition of TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by AutoTrader.com on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 7p. Ernie Johnson will host the pregame show with analysts Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith. Following the show, TNT offers a doubleheader pitting the Cavaliers/Knicks and Clippers/Warriors.

ESPN announced plans to offer more than 80 regular-season college softball games across its networks this season, with ESPNU and ESPNEWS combining to televise more than 40 games, including the entire SEC tournament and the ACC, American, SWAC, and Big South championship games. In addition, ESPN3 will carry more than 40 exclusive regular-season games. The action begins with Tennessee hosting South Carolina on Sunday, March 23, at 2:30p on ESPNU.

Longtime Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy is coming back, after stepping away from the booth after his son Jared was arrested and charged with murdering girlfriend Jennifer Martel in August. Remy will return with the new season.

Whether it is sports scores, stocks, weather, or the historical prices of advertising during the Super Bowl, Numbeez curates data in fun dashboards that can be shared with others and update in realtime. Budweiser released a teaser for its newest Super Bowl spot, “Hero’s Welcome.” The premise features a single soldier’s homecoming, with the entire town of Winter Park, Fla. rallying to welcome him home. The company reports that during the editing process, Budweiser recognized the content – which includes the town’s preparation and heartfelt messages of thanks from neighbors, casual acquaintances and strangers alike  was ‘too good to restrict to 30 seconds” and they bought an addition 30 seconds of air time to make “Hero’s Welcome” a full 60-second Super Bowl spot. 

Meanwhile, ESPN is serving up a Super Bowl Week promo that showcases the rivalry between Denver Broncos’ mascot Miles and Seattle Seahawks’ mascot Blitz that’s taking place throughout the week at ESPN’s Bristol, Conn., campus. Dubbed “Long Week,” the spot features SportsCenter hosts Jay Crawford and Steve Levy in the elevator as they witness a tense and awkward encounter between the two mascots.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

Red Bull TV is coming to Apple TV. Red Bull Media House announced that the digital video service is available to Apple TV users around the globe for free with programming that includes films, shows and clips. Live program offerings on Red Bull TV have been expanded in 2014 to include 3rd party events such as the Burton European and US Open events as well as owned events such as Red Bull Rampage,

Bleacher Report continues its upward climb. Turner reports that BleacherReport.com surpassed the 30 million uniques plateau in December to mark the site’s first time reaching the milestone. Overall, Bleacher Report now ranks third among all non-league sports sites in monthly cross-platform traffic.

Meanwhile, ESPN Digital Media announced that it saw 64.9 million unique visitors across computers, smartphones and tablets in December, according to comSore’s Multi-Platform report. December marked the fourth consecutive month ESPN delivered more than 60 million uniques, and generated 7.1 billion minutes of usage in December, up 22% over last year.

FOX Sports continues to add new toys to the Super Bowl, announcing that it was teaming up with Autodesk to allow viewers see what impact the wind may have on the first Super Bowl ever held outdoors in a cold-weather locale. The technology is called FOX WEATHER TRAX and will allow the broadcaster to superimpose visual representations of wind direction directly over game play.
