ABC cut hit drama Scandal‘s season three order from 22 to 18 episodes. ABC didn’t offer an explanation, but the move was likely prompted by the pregnancy of star Kerry Washington, whose character would be tricky to write out. Scandal’s fall finale airs Thursday, December 12; the remaining new eps launch Thursday, February 27.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Fox altered its schedule to ramp up freshman drama Sleepy Hollow’s “haunting” finale. The show is now a two-hour event on Monday, January 20 that bumps the premiere of The Following‘s second season to Monday, January 27. The Following’s “special preview” is still set for the prime post-NFC Championship spot Sunday, January 19; the move means its season will now stretch into May sweep.

AMC canceled Low Winter Sun after one season. Despite its Breaking Bad lead-in, the Endemol-produced cop drama was delivering fewer than one million viewers by the end of its run.

Fox’s Dads, the net’s lowest-rated freshman comedy, will top at 19 episodes instead of a full order of 22. Fox announced last month that Dads and The Mindy Project were taking a hiatus at midseason, allowing Glee to move back to Tuesdays at 8, starting February 25. No word on when/where Dads will return.

About 47 percent of U.S. homes have at least one DVR, according to a new study from Leichtman Research Group, up from 23 percent in 2007, but up just 2 percent versus last year. Netflix is seeing a bigger jump. About 46 percent of non-pay TV subscribers buy Netflix, according to the study, versus 34 percent last year, and 51 percent of 18-34-year-olds subscribe, compared to 40 percent last year.

DiGiorno Pizza’s clever tweets during NBC‘s The Sound of Music Live! on Thursday (sample: “Can’t believe pizza isn’t one of her favorite things smh”) caused a Twitter storm and earned a burst of glowing press. And it was attention money couldn’t – and didn’t – buy.  The tweeting “was absolutely spontaneous,” DiGiorno Brand Manager Brian Linz told Ad Age. “Our social media writer began with a tweet that just happened to get amazing pick-up.”

Legendary Television and Digital inked a multi-year, multi-platform producing deal with Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfield‘s Red Hour Films. The Red Hour team’s programming “is broadly appealing, yet fulfills the edginess and irreverence that is so on brand for Legendary,” said Legendary president Bruce Rosenblum.

Music Choice is expanding its channel lineup to include Teen MC, Pop Rhythmic, Pop Country, Y2K and Love Songs. The move, prompted by research and viewer feedback and intended to appeal mainly to Millennials, is effective Tuesday, December 10.

Pivot‘s upcoming HitRecord On TV, from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, will spend the night before its television debut getting a screening at the Sundance Film Festival. It will be the third time Gordon-Levitt’s HitRecord production company, which creates pieces collaboratively from users, has made an appearance at the festival; the Pivot show launches Saturday, January 18 at 10p.

The FCC is moving the auction of broadcast spectrum for wireless that was expected to take place at the end of 2014 to mid 2015. Broadcast stations will give up spectrum, then get a piece of the proceeds when it’s purchased by mobile and telecom firms. But the process is too complex to complete in 2014, said FCC chairman Tom Wheeler in a blog post Friday. “Only when our software and systems are technically ready, user friendly, and thoroughly tested,” Wheeler said, “will we start the auction.”

~ RATINGS ~

Sixteen going on 19 million: NBC‘s The Sound of Music Live! averaged a 4.6 rating and 13 share among A18-49 and 18.47 million viewers Thursday night, according to Nielsen. The Big Bang Theory won its half hour in the adult demo with 4.8/14, but NBC swept the rest of the night, for the net’s best Thursday total viewer performance, excluding sports, since the series finale of Frasier in 2004.

The morning wasn’t too shabby for NBC, either. The net’s coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from 9a-noon drew an average audience of 25.2 million, up 12 percent from last year. The parade earned a 6.6 rating/17 share in A18-49, the best since 2004.

ABC‘s Shark Tank was again the top-rated show on Friday night with 2.0/6 in A18-49, according to fast nationals, and delivered its highest viewership ever, 7.5 million. A 20/20 show about Nelson Mandela was up 22 percent versus last week(1.1/3). ABC tied NBC for the top spot in the demo for the night, with 1.4/4.

Ten weeks into the season, CBS was number one in total viewers, averaging 11.97 million, up 2 percent over last year, with 14 of the top 20 scripted broadcast series.

Spanish-language Estrella TV‘s 10-part original mini-series, Jenni: La Vida de Una Diva, averaged 198,000 viewers among A18-49 (up 110 percent in the time period versus last year), 218,000 in A25-54 (up 140 percent) and 411,000 in P2+ (up 140 percent), helping make November the 4-year-old net’s most-viewed month ever.

CBS‘s The Talk ended its best ever November sweep in viewers (2.81 million) and W25-54 rating (1.0) the week of November 25 with a best-ever weekly performance of 2.96 million viewers, up 9 percent from the prior week.

General Hospital hit a near six-year high in total viewers (3.3 million), and an over two-and-a half year high in W18-49 (774,000, 1.2 rating) the week of November 25. (Spoiler alert: Robin’s alive!)

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: NBC won the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 4.6/13, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. NBC’s Sound of Music Live! won every hour: 8p with 4.7/14 versus a 3.6/11 average for CBS’s Big Bang Theory and The Millers; 9p by scoring 4.9/13 against 2.3/6 for ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and 10p with 4.4/12, followed by 3.0/8 for ABC’s Scandal.
