Cynopsis: Sports
01.27.14
Good morning. It’s Monday, January 27, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With all eyes on the Super Bowl over the next week, FOX is going to the mattresses in an effort to make the most of the opportunity. With the game marking the first in which FOX has had a national sports channel in FOX Sports 1, the network has stacked the week with more than 90 hours of exclusive live events, programs and specials, including more than 40 dedicated to coverage of the game. Coverage will be anchored from Times Square, led by FOX Super Bowl Daily, followed by Afternoon Huddle Live from Radio Row.
Cynopsis Sports spoke with David Nathanson, General Manager and COO of Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, about maximizing the spotlight this week.
Nathanson on state of FOX Sports 1: The network continues to evolve as we continue to add more marquee programming and develop all of our original programming and our studio shows. I think the network is in a really strong place is will only get stronger. Obviously, the network is focused now, not only in covering the Super Bowl and covering everything across those events, but also Super Bowl Week. We have an incredible lineup of live events that really will make this the primary destination for sports fans leading into the big game.
Across all of our shows, we are doing some really unique things to take advantage of the fact that this is not only Super Bowl Week, but it’s on FOX and it’s on New York. If there was one show I’d have to highlight, it would be FOX Super Bowl daily, which will be live from Times Square twice a day, one at 12p and one at 6p and on Saturday it’s on for two hours. That is what I would consider our show of record for our Super Bowl coverage; it’s being produced by the same guys who produce The NFL on FOX. It’s got that same insight and depth and, frankly, talent and comfort that fans have come to expect from FOX’s NFL coverage and it will be our home base for all of the events leading into the Super Bowl.
On objectives: First and foremost, it’s to serve the fan and be the undisputed home of Super Bowl coverage. This is the show of record and the network of record for this year’s Super Bowl. The truth of the matter is that obviously FOX has had a number of Super Bowls in the past, but we’ve never been able to cover it in this way because we’ve never had the national sports network to do so. So this is really the first time that we’ve been able to put all of the muscle, creative power and talent that we have, both in front and behind the camera, to wrap ourselves behind this incredible event and this incredible location and with these unique circumstances, including the weather in New York City.
We have 11 college basketball games, we have a Golden Boy Championship title fight, we have a US Soccer match we are calling “Battle for the Border,” between the US and Canada. We have the UFC Prelims, not to mention the other things we are doing around the Super Bowl. So it will be an incredible week of coverage and it’s really the beginning to set the stage for the evolution of this network soon after like Speedweek and getting ready for Daytona, we have the Big East Basketball Tournament coming up, we have baseball which will begin on the network this year and a huge opportunity for us. It sets the stage for a big year for us.
On the takeaway for audiences: The takeaway is that this network is the destination that people can come to, not only as their source for information, but also as the voice of FOX Sports. With FOX Sports 1, our ultimate goal is to deliver on those expectations for the fans and expectations we set for ourselves in production excellence, entertainment value and the like. I think we are well down the path toward achieving that.
On the NASCAR season: Having come from SPEED Network and evolving into FOX Sports 1, our commitment to NASCAR has only gotten stronger. The things we are going to be doing around Speedweek and all of our NASCAR programming is going to be pretty unprecedented. Obviously, we have Race Hub on a daily basis on the network, and relaunches Monday (today) at 4-5p five days a week. We certainly recognize the passionate base of those NASCAR fans, but the portfolio of NASCAR rights we have will put us in a spectacular position to cover the entire season.
On the biggest pleasant surprise since launch: The people both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Launching a national network is certainly not an easy task, and the fact that we’ve been able to pull together an incredible group of talented individuals that are focused together on one goal, which is seeing the network succeed and meeting those levels of excellence, is the best part of this experience and will set us apart in the future.
Speaking of FOX, 21st Century Fox formally took on a majority stake in the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network (YES Network), announcing that the company as raising its ownership position in the channel to 80% from the current 49% it nabbed in 2012, with the remaining 20% stake held by Yankee Global Enterprises. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the first calendar quarter. Tracy Dolgin, President and Chief Executive Officer of the YES Network, will remain in his role leading the network.
Comcast announced plans to allow its Xfinity TV subscribers to add to their personal Olympic experience. The company, according to the AP, will allow audiences to use Comcast Corp.’s X1 video set-top box to access the NBC Sports Live Extra app on big-screen TVs, offering streaming of events and other coverage from Sochi, Russia, which includes the live program Gold Zone, hosted by Andrew Siciliano,
Manny Pacquiao is heading back to Vegas, with HBO Sports announcing a rematch against Timothy Bradley for his next PPV event. The fight will take place on April 12, and sets up a show at redemption for Pacquiao, who lost to Bradley in a controversial decision in June 2012. The card also marks the first PPV for HBO in 2014.
NBCU’s relationship with WWE could hinge on a Hall of Fame, according to the New York Post. As renewal talks for rights to programs such as Raw and Smackdown, among others, NBCUniversal is reportedly offering to create a WWE Hall of Fame at its Universal Studios theme park in Orlando as an incentive. NBCU’s exclusive negotiating period ends Feb. 1, sources told the paper, although NBCU does have matching rights should the exclusive window close without a deal.
NBA TV announced that this week’s upcoming NBA Fan Night presented by Sprint will feature the Spurs/Rockets on Tuesday at 8p, with the game also tipping off the NBA’s Chinese New Year Celebration. NBA Fan Night host Ernie Johnson and analysts Chris Webber and Greg Anthony will offer analysis during the AutoTrader.com Pregame Show starting at 7:30p.

FOX announced that four-time Olympic champion diver and dog agility expert Greg Louganis, along with Crowd Goes Wild co-host Georgie Thompson and NFL on FOX sideline reporter Jennifer Hale will call the Masters Agility Championship at Westminster on FOX Sports 1. The event takes place Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7p from Pier 94 in New York City.
Lifetime is celebrating Black History Month with original movie The Gabby Douglas Story, premiering Saturday, February 1, at 8p. The pic stars Regina King, Imani Hakim, Sydney Mikayla and S. Epatha Merkerson, with a cameo by Gabby to boot. “When my producing partner, Zev Braun, saw the picture of Gabby Douglas on the front page of the NY Times and LA Times after winning the Gold Medal, he knew there was a story to be told about her incredible journey to the Olympics and the history she made at the games,” Executive Producer Philip Krupp told Cynopsis. “What we didn’t yet know, was how inspiring and inspirational her — and her family’s — story truly was. And now others will see how committed her family was, as well as the sacrifices they made to help her realize her dream.”
