Apple announced yesterday it has acquired the social analytics firm Topsy for $200 million, the Wall Street Journal reports. Topsy is currently paying for access to Twitter data to analyze trends.
In Other Words: Apple just got an all-access-pass to Twitter’s secret sauce without actually purchasing the company. Nice move.
As kids programmers and distributors search for new ways to reach advertisers and viewers, online games and apps have emerged as an effective method to drive engagement–and ultimately revenue and ratings. Ford’s Fiesta Movement and What’s Trending announced it will host the Second Annual Tube-A-Thon, a digital social telethon bringing celebrities and musicians together to raise money for the homeless youth charity Covenant House. The Tube-A-Thon will be live-streamed from YT’s Space LA on What’s Trending Thursday on Dec. 12, at 9p ET.
To sell a website’s services and products, TV remains the best bet, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Trade association TVB found similar results in its Purchase Funnel Study, which showed that consumers refer to TV ads five times more than those on the web (43% versus 9%) when explaining what drives their buying decisions.
Music discovery app Shazam announced its Sounds of 2014 list today, which includes artists and song predictions for the coming year and trends on the app from the past year.

Digital company Evolve Media announced it has hired Mitch Rotter as its Senior Vice President of Marketing. Rotter joins Evolve from Break Media where he was Executive Vice President of Programming.
Digital video advertising agency Eyeview has hired Christina Calvaneso as its new Head of Finance and Business Operations, Amit Mashiah as its Senior Vice President of Marketing and Antony Chen as its Vice President of Product Development. Calvaneso joins the company from Criteo, Mashiah from McCann Erickson Israel and Chen from Yahoo.
Digital health source Precision Health Media has named Peter Fontana as its new Vice President of Advertising Sales and Richard O’Connor as its first Chief Financial Officer. Fontana was most recently Director-Digital Ad Sales at AMC Networks, and O’Connor was previously co-founder and CFO of Prime Visibility Networks. Additionally, Andy Chapman has joined the company’s Board of Advisors.
Data company Umbel has hired Jim McNamara as its new Senior Vice President of Global Sales. McNamara was previously Head of Sales for Verizon’s Precision Market insights.
