Showtime, Starz and HBO are calling foul on the NPD Group report saying subscriptions for premium TV channels have declined six percent over the past two years, while SVOD services have risen four percent. Showtime issued a release Tuesday citing an SNL Kagan study saying that while video services like Netflix have made gains, so has premium cable. BTIG media analyst Richard Greenfield calls the NPD study “meaningless,” posting in his blog on Tuesday, “We believe premium growth has been quite healthy, with absolute premium subscribers now at an all-time high driven by improving quality of content.”

 IN THE NEWS

In an increasingly bitter carriage dispute, The Weather Channel chairman and CEO David Kenny took another jab at DirecTV. With TWC off DirecTV since midnight January 14, Kenny wrote an open letter to DirecTV board members – appearing in an ad in newspapers Wednesday – urging the service to let the 90,000 DirecTV subscribers Kenny says have pledged to switch providers “vote with their feet” by waiving termination fees of $200-$400. Responded a spokesperson for DirecTV, “The Weather Channel is so used to dramatizing the weather, they may have lost all sense of reality.”

Viacom launched a new ad sales unit yesterday offering integrated marketing and creative content solutions. Viacom Velocity Integrated Marketing will plan and execute campaigns for Viacom’s networks and their extensions and social media; its Creative Content Solutions branch will produce custom content with MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, CMT, Logo, Spike TV and TV Land for TV, digital platforms and cross-network campaigns.

That Murder, She Wrote reboot in the works at NBC? Not happening, reports Deadline. The project had Octavia Spencer attached and a pilot commitment from the net, but it’s been put on hold, possibly moving forward with a new concept at later date.

A new Nielsen study says Super Bowl fans have fatter wallets. Last year, over a quarter of the 53 million homes tuned in to the big game made more than $100,000 a year, versus 14 percent in 2003.
