TOP NEWS
Chinese video-streaming giant iQIYI is likely headed for an initial public offering in 2017, hoping to raise about $1 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. iQIYI is owned by Baidu, China’s dominant online search provider. According to the WSJ’s sources, Baidu will most like list iQIYI’s shares on a foreign share market – probably Hong Kong or the U.S. Reportedly, the IPO could value iQIYI at up to $5 billion. The company hasn’t officially commented on the Journal’s report.
The software company Oracle has officially asked the FCC to reconsider the sweeping broadband privacy rules it passed earlier. In October, the agency prohibited Internet service providers from drawing on their subscribers’ web activity and app usage in ad targeting. Oracle argues that the rules will give an unfair advantage to Google, to whom rules regarding ISPs don’t apply. "Google already has the ability to track virtually every movement of a consumer’s day through an Android phone or tablet," Oracle argued. The rules are slated to take effect on January 3, but after FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler steps down and Donald Trump takes office, it might not be be too long before they’re overturned.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
Just in time for the holidays, PlayStation VR buyers will have access to a lot more content. VR startup Jaunt has launched its app for Sony’s gaming-focused headset. It features over 150 virtual reality experiences, ranging from Escape the Living Dead VR to episodes of ABC News VR. The Jaunt app is now accessible through all of the most prominent VR headsets; it was already available on the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Google Daydream, and Samsung Gear VR. Users can also watch Jaunt titles – either as 360-degree videos or using Google Cardboard viewers – via Android and iOS apps.
The Apple Watch just got a Pokemon Go app. The augmented reality game, created by Niantic Labs, hasn’t brought its full “catch ‘em all” spirit to the Apple wearable; you’ll still need a smartphone to actually capture Pokemon. But the app will enable users to collect Pokeballs and other items from Pokestops, and tell users when there’s a Pokemon nearby.
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
Are you ready for a ‘Sports Center’-style live music show? LiveXLive, a subsidiary of Loton Corps., has teamed up with Big Boots Studios to create LXL Studios. The new unit will acquire, produce and develop original music and lifestyle content to distribute across LiveXLive’s digital platform. LXL Studios will also host a magazine-style news shows. The show will feature what the companies are calling a “socially influential cast,” and will “take fans around the world of music in ‘snack sized bits’ of real-time, curated, authentic, relevant, behind-the-scenes content segments.” LXL Studios will also develop and curate original scripted and unscripted short-form content, mostly in mobile-centric formats. LXL Studios plans to launch in 2017. Big Boots will then take the lead on producing and developing ten to twelve pilots, and three to five docu-series.
BRANDED CONTENT
Starbucks is out with its second branded web series. 1st and Main comes from three writers who have written for The Simpsons: John Frink, Joel H Cohen, and Rob LaZebnik, and consists of animated vignettes set at Starbucks shops. Oh, and all the characters are anthropomorphic animals. Two episodes are out so far; Starbucks says there will be seven total. You can check them out at the Starbucks YouTube channel.
Mobile brand advertising company Kargo has named a new exec. Adam Chandler will serve as Chief Business Officer, a newly created role. As CBO, Chandler will oversee Kargo’s revenue streams across its direct, programmatic and self-service businesses. He’ll be based in New York, reporting to CEO and Founder Harry Kargman. Chandler joins Kargo from the ad tech company Rubcion Project, where he served as SVP of Revenue.
Speaking of which, Rubicon Project has had a rough go of it lately. In the last couple of months, the company has suffered disappointing Q3 earnings, undertaken widespread layoffs, seen the departure of CTO Neal Richter, and yes, lost SVP of Revenue Adam Chandler to Kargo. Along with Chandler, SVP of Marketplace Development Jay Sears has also left the company. Sears has joined Mastercard Advisors as head of its media solutions group.
