Good morning. It’s Monday, December 23, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing and our last edition until Jan. 2.
As the era of the BCS comes to a close and a playoff begins, executives at the American Football Coaches Association are looking to upgrade the organization’s visibility. As the home of the Coaches Trophy, which was first presented to the late Joe Paterno in 1986, the organization announced the launch of a Coaches Trophy Social Hub last week, produced in partnership with Mass Relevance. The Hub is designed to tell the story of the Trophy as well as integrate content from fans, coaches and experts. Meanwhile, college football fans will be able to vote for their top “coaches moment” from the past and upload video of their own impersonations.
Cynopsis Sports spoke with the American Football Coaches Association’s Vince Thompson and Jordan Gill about the end of the BCS, how it impacts the iconic trophy and why the organization is now looking to strengthen its bonds with fans.
Thompson on the BCS: With the BCS going away, our Coaches Trophy will continue to still be awarded to our national champion each year. Even though the College Football Playoff is going in a different direction and making their own trophy, we still feel that Coaches Trophy is what people know as the FBS National Champion. When people think about the national champion, they think about the crystal ball, so we wanted to keep it that tradition alive, even after this college football playoff gets started.
Gill on creating the hub: We wanted to highlight the Coaches Trophy this year, and capture the conversation that fans had been having anyway. So, in order to continue that conversation, even post- January 6, we needed to create something that had a social element to it and give college football fans a place where they can interact, discuss and debate the sport. To make this happen, we turned to Mass Relevance to allow us to maximize our connection with them and they helped us create a home for these fans.
On features: We already know the conversation is going to be there and our objective was to take that conversation to a new level. The site will allow fans to vote for their favorite moments from the past as well as upload video of their own impersonations of these moments. Our relationships with coaches will help promote the site via social media as well as some media people we deal with regularly. This is a great way to get the conversation out there, generate excitement among our fans and bolster our brand.
America’s first professional rugby sevens league, the Grand Prix RFL, named its first Commissioner, announcing that League Counsel Frank Grant of Perkins Coie would assume the position. In a statement, Grant said priorities would include launching franchises and winning the Gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Summer Games. The league will kick off the Phase-One Championship Tour, pitting the RFL’s 4 Founding Franchises against 20 teams from the world’s richest sevens championships.

Williams will appear on The Finale every other Tuesday, while Weiss will join analysts Shon Morris and Stephen Bardo on Big Ten Basketball Report. The deal will cover 60 regular season games as well as additional pre-season games in the team’s selected broadcast region.
