Marcus Lemonis, host of CNBC’s The Profit, heads to California as Proposition 64, the new law allowing adults to buy cannabis legally, goes into effect on New Year’s Day. Special episode “The Profit in Marijuana Country,” airing Tuesday, January 2 at 10p, focuses on growers and entrepreneurs betting on the future of pot.
Thirteen’s Cyberchase airs a New Year’s Eve-themed episode, “A Reboot Eve to Remember,” on Friday, December 29 on PBS Kids (check local listings). Series stars Christopher Lloyd and Gilbert Gottfried as “The Hacker” and “Digit.”
Fox’s The X-Files returns Wednesday, January 3 at 8p. A new teaser offers hints of what’s to come from series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson and creator Chris Carter (prepare to be shocked by the cigarette smoking man) – you can check it out here.
Food Network’s Worst Cooks in America premieres at a special time Sunday, February 4 at 10p, sliding to its regular 9p timeslot for a “Sweets for My Sweetie” Valentine’s episode the following week.
Up is premiering “Meowy Christmas!” on Christmas morning, from 7-9a. The special episode of Meow Manor, described as “that show where you watch a bunch of people who live together in a house…but with cats!” will feature a Christmas tree, ornaments, tinsel and wrapping paper for kitties to sink their claws into.
NFL Media VP and executive editor David Eaton resigned following reports of hundreds of sexually explicit exchanges on Twitter with prostitutes and porn stars. Eaton’s exit comes the week after the NFL Network suspended on-air analysts Marshall Faulk, Ike Taylor and Heath Evans as it investigates claims of sexual harassment and assault.
Ratings be damned – NFL TV ad spending is on the rise, according to Standard Media Index. SMI reports the average 30-second spot for games in November went from $502,809 in 2016 to $513,293 this season, and makegoods dipped from 23% to 22%. The biggest increase in category spend came from insurance (up 41%), while telecommunications spend was down by 8% versus last year.
CBS All Access is now available on Samsung Smart TVs. Users with Tizen models issued from 2015 on will be able to stream the service on their devices; CBS All Access will be available on older models in the near future.

Facebook and Universal Music Group struck a global, multi-year agreement making UMG the first major music company to allow Facebook users to add songs from its catalog to video posts, as well as Instagram and Oculus. “Facebook and UMG are creating a dynamic new model for collaboration between music companies and social platforms to advance the interests of recording artists and songwriters while enhancing the social experience of music for their fans,” said Michael Nash, EVP of digital strategy, UMG. “This partnership is an important first step demonstrating that innovation and fair compensation for music creators are mutually reinforcing – they thrive together.
Amazon Prime announced its 2018 series slate. Arriving in January is drama Britannia, set in 43 AD, followed in February by Absentia, starring and exec produced by Castle’s Stana Katic, and docu-series Grand Prix Driver. Among the offerings debuting at an unspecified point next year are unscripted series following Hannah Grant and the Tour de France, and the University of Michigan football team, along with an adaptation of Australian novel Picnic at Hanging Rock, set-in-the-present-day King Lear, and Hugh Grant in A Very English Scandal. CIA drama Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and an adaptation of Thackeray’s Vanity Fair are also on the way.
Amazon Prime Video has been busy nailing down content deals with Spain’s Mediaset Espana, Atresmedia and Radio Television Espanola, for programming that would air not only in Spain but Latin America and in some cases, the U.S. Hispanic market.
IFC’s FODtv (Funny or Die Television) is offering “slightly off” takes on the traditional Yule log and New Year’s Eve kiss. The Shirtless Painter: Yule Log Special premieres December 25 at 6a, and new short-form series Tonight on Making Out will air throughout the film Uncle Buck on December 30 at 8p. FODtv, branded nights of short form programming, launched in October.

NBC won the fourth quarter for the sixth consecutive year among A18-49, with an average 2.4 rating that led by a margin of +33%, the biggest advantage for any network in the season in the 30-year history of the Nielsen people meter sample. In total viewers NBC was second to CBS, with 9.2 million versus 9.8 million.
The season 35 finale of CBS’s Survivor delivered a 1.9/8 rating among A18-49, matching its last 2 finales. Survivor Reunion was up 23% from December 2016, with 1.6/6 in the demo.
The finale for Nat Geo WILD miniseries Savage Kingdom: Uprising delivered almost 600,000 total viewers and a .35 and over 200,000 among 25-54 in Live+3 Nielsens.

As part of an executive shuffle accompanying the BBC’s newly consolidated BBC Studios production and distribution teams, Tom Fussell will take the role of CFO of the combined BBC Studios, after holding the title at BBC Worldwide.
