12/17/14: Elf on Shelf pops up on Sprout; Saban splits programming, licensing units; Hearst-DWA make Awesome plans

CYNOPSISKIDS!
12.17.14

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 17, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

A Note to our Readers
As of January 2015, we will be incorporating news from the kids’ content business into the flagship edition of Cynopsis; so instead of Cyn Kids weekly, look for your updates regularly in Cynopsis. In addition, we will continue our extensive coverage of the Kids Upfronts in weekly editions of Cynopsis Kids from February to April, and Special Reports throughout the year. And, of course, look for our call for entries in March for the annual Kids Imagination Awards Gala, which will take place in September 2015.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Look where that sneaky Elf on the Shelf is turning up now. Sprout will air the holiday flick An Elf’s Story: The Elf on the Shelf several times this weekend to maximize viewing opportunities. First airing is 1p Saturday, followed by 5:30p Saturday, and during the network’s Good Night Show at 6p, 9p and midnight on Sunday.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Disney Junior is premiering new series Kate & Mim-Mim on Dec. 19 at 8p with back-to-back episodes, including the holiday-themed ep “A Christmas Wish.” Created by husband and wife duo Scott and Julie Stewart and based on their daughter Kate, the series follows a feisty 5-year-old who together with her toy rabbit travels to a fantasy world where Mim-Mim comes alive as a larger-than-life playmate. Key themes are friendship, teamwork and problem solving. Kate & Mim-Mim is produced and developed by Nerd Corps Entertainment; FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment holds exclusive worldwide TV distribution and licensing rights to the property outside of Canada.

ReactToThat, a half-hour TV series from The Fine Bros., based on the YouTube franchise React, premiered Monday on Nickelodeon. The show, created with Nick Cannon’s NCredible Entertainment, will consist of kids and celebrities responding to viral videos on the web. The first episode featured YT’s Bethany Mota and Lia Marie Johnson along with network stars Mace Coronel and Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Rick, Dicky & Dawn). ReactToThat will regularly air Monday through Friday at 6p through Jan. 1, 2015, on Nickelodeon. In its three years since launching online, the React franchise has garnered 1 billion-plus video views and more than 10 million subscribers. The success of Kids React has yielded spinoffs Teens React, Elders React and YouTubers React.

Nat Geo WILD signed a new licensing agreement with Walt Disney Studios to bring its viewers six Disney nature-themed favorites: Chimpanzee, Bears, Wings of Life, African Cats, Oceans, The Crimson Wing: Mystery of The Flamingos and Deep Blue. Chimpanzee premieres Sunday, Jan. 11 at 8p. The remaining films will air throughout 2015.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Saban Brands is going with a divide-and-conquer strategy. It’s formed two units within the company–Saban Brands Lifestyle Group and Saban Brands Entertainment Group. The former will manage Saban’s portfolio of fashion and lifestyle properties; the latter will oversee its entertainment portfolio. SBLG will be led by NY-based Dan Castle, managing director of strategic business development. Castle will continue to report to Elie Dekel, president of Saban Brands. “We have proven our approach to brand management and expansion, so these new units were a natural progression for us,” said Dekel, who will oversee the Entertainment Group from LA.

RESEARCH & TRENDS

Fatigued by all the "hot gift" lists, millennial parents say fewer gifts and more family fun top their holiday wish lists, according to the Millennial Parent Holiday Survey from PBS Kids. Among results of the survey of parents ages 18-33, released yesterday:
*  82 percent crave more family time
*  80 percent want to spend more time playing with their kids this holiday season
*  37 percent would like to spend less time shopping
* 45 percent would like to spend less time assembling gifts

DIGITAL UPDATE

Hearst Corp. acquired a 25 percent stake in DreamWorks Animation’s multi-channel network AwesomenessTV for $81.25 million. “Few companies have built the global audience of millennial females as quickly as AwesomenessTV. For us, it’s very important to make a bet on the future of how content is created,” Hearst CEO/president Steven R. Swartz said. Hearst will work with DWA to manage its current programming and grow ATV, allowing DreamWorks Anination access to its SVOD technology, pushing more content to consumers across multiple formats. Two years old, AwesomenessTV averages 800 million monthly views and more than 114 million subscribers. Its top YouTube channels include Cimorelli, Miss Glamorazzi, Tyler Oakley, Cameron Dallas and Nash Grier.

Kids websites are getting into the holiday spirit. For one, BCKids.com just debuted 19-year-old singer/songwriter Alec Chambers’ cover of Wham’s “Last Christmas!” Worth checking out.

LICENSING

DHX Brands named additional UK licensees as it ramps up activity on its new version of the iconic Teletubbies brand. New deals signed by Copyright Promotions Licensing Group, the UK licensing agent for the property, include: Worlds Apart, Aykroyds, Character World, Posh Paws and Zak UK.

INTERNATIONAL

Guru Studio appointed Small Screen Distribution to manage all TV and home entertainment rights in Asia for all its current series. Small Screen Distribution, headed by Kerry Novick, concluded two deals for Justin Time, with Ciwen Media Group, one of China’s leading brand managers and TV distributors, and a broadcast deal with Tiga in Thailand for the first two seasons of the series.

9 Story Media Group licensed another 26-ep season of Camp Lakebottom to Disney Channels Asia, which includes Southeast Asia, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The second season was also picked up by several other Disney territories including the US, UK, CEEMA, India, Japan and Latin America.

Picture Box Distribution sold Sinking Ship Entertainment’s Annedroids to Discovery Kids Asia.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nickelodeon promoted Gerald Raines from VP to SVP of Recreation Business Development, Nickelodeon Group. In his expanded role, Raines will spearhead the global business development and expansion of Viacom’s location-based leisure entertainment business.

Kenny Miller has been named SVP, Digital Programming and Product, at ABC Family. Most recently, Miller was Co-Founder of Kam.io and creator of the Kamio social network.
