Charter Communications is preparing an offer letter for Time Warner Cable, according to multiple reports. With competition increasing from streaming companies like Netflix and retrans fees rising, consolidation would give Charter more bargaining muscle in future discussions with content providers; TWC talked to Comcast about a merger earlier this year.
Matthew Perry is bringing The Odd Couple back to television. The Friends alum will write and exec produce, as well as star as Oscar Madison, in the CBS Television Studios project, which nabbed a script plus penalty commitment from CBS. Perry’s NBC comedy, Go On, was canceled in May.
Responding to criticism about the absence of African-American female cast members, Saturday Night Live has been holding auditions for several weeks to remedy the problem, reports the New York Times. Creator and exec producer of the NBC late night sketch show, Lorne Michaels, told the paper on Thursday that he is committed to hiring at least one new performer by early January.
More drama behind the scenes at NBC‘s midseason entry, Believe: Exec producer Dave Erickson is being replaced by Jonas Pate (Deception). Original showrunner Mark Friedman departed in July. No premiere date has been set.
Like another American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson will stretch her acting wings on television. But unlike Carrie Underwood on Sound of Music Live!, Clarkson will play herself, singing on ABC‘s Nashville with the show’s Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen, Billboard was first to report. Nashville airs Wednesdays at 10p.
After drawing criticism for reassuring The Kelly File audience Wednesday night that Santa is “just a white man” (and Jesus was, too), Megyn Kelly came out swinging on Friday, suggesting her detractors were race-baiting. “Humor is part of what we try to bring to the show,” said the Fox News anchor. “Sometimes that’s lost on the humorless.” While Kelly didn’t backtrack on Santa, she did admit Jesus’ race “is far from settled.”
Adam Sandler will guest on the special Super Bowl night episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine on February 2. Sandler, who is friends with Brooklyn star Andy Samberg, will play himself. The Fox comedy airs Tuesdays at 8:30p.
The International Academy of Arts & Sciences announced the International Emmy Awards competition is open for entries, including a new category for Non-English language U.S. primetime programs. Deadline is February 17, 2014.
Ahead of its union negotiation with production companies, The Writers Guild of America asked its members to approve a plan to increase compensation for cable shows. The negotiations “will take place in the context of a recovering economy and a healthy, and expanding, media industry,” said WGA West president Christopher Keyser and WGA East president Michael Winship in a letter. The current agreement expires May 1.

On the 25th anniversary of the Pan Am Flight 103 disaster over Scotland, Smithsonian Channel is airing The Lockerbie Bombing. The STV Productions documentary about events surrounding the terrorist attack premieres Saturday, December 21 at 8p.
Daytime’s Steve Harvey features a sit-down with President Obama at the White House on December 20. Topics on the syndicated ep, produced by Endemol, include fatherhood and the First Family’s plans for the holidays.

Suburgatory star Cheryl Hines is jumping to the The Crazy Ones for a guest spot, reports TVLine. Crazy Ones airs Thursdays at 9p on CBS; third season of Suburgatory returns Wednesday, January 15 at 8:30 on ABC.
Nia Long has joined the cast of The Divide, WE tv‘s first scripted series. Production is underway in Toronto for eight one-hour eps to premiere in 2014.
Portia de Rossi (Arrested Development) will guest in a three-ep arc on NBC‘s Sean Saves the World as Sean’s ex-wife, reports EW.com. Sean airs Thursdays at 9p.
Homeland‘s Morena Baccarin (Jessica) and Morgan Saylor (Dana), original cast members in the Showtime drama, will not be regulars when it returns for season four. Though Baccarin earned an Emmy nomination for the show’s second season, neither actress got much play in season three, which wrapped up Sunday.
Season five of My Strange Addiction kicks off with a one-hour special Wednesday, January 1 at 9p. From Morningstar Entertainment, “I’m a Living Doll” follows three people who take extreme measures (surgery, eye-enlarging contacts) to look like human dolls. Starting Wednesday, January 8, the series from Violent Media settles into its regular 10p slot.
TNT gave a pilot order to Proof, exec produced by Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), and greenlit a drama co-written by O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark, reports Deadline. Proof centers on a female surgeon who investigates the possibility of life after death; Guilt By Association is based on the book by Clark about a deputy district attorney in LA.
David Spade (Rules of Engagement) is close to a deal with HBO for an untitled comedy about a fading rock and roll manager named Shane and his Christian boy band, The Five Commandments, reports Deadline. Spade would co-write and play Shane.
Telemundo Media struck a licensing deal with online video service DramaFever to stream 1000 episodes of its telenovelas. DramaFever will make the telenovelas, with English subtitles, available on its website and mobile apps.

In a serenade showdown Thursday night, it was NBC‘s The Sing-Off by a tenth in A18-49 at 8p, over Fox‘s The X Factor which dipped two tenths to 1.2 A18-49.
ABC scored with a pair of winter finales. Grey’s Anatomy grew 17 percent week to week, and Scandal beat its year-ago winter finale by 33 percent.
ABC ranked number one on Friday among A18-49 for the second week in a row, per preliminary Nielson numbers. Shark Tank was again Friday’s top program in the demo, with 2.0/7. The net’s 20/20 was up 27 percent week to week in A18-49, with 1.4/5.
Holiday specials of ABC Family comedies Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy ranked as cable’s number one telecasts in their time periods on December 11 across W18-34 with, respectively, 379,000/1.1 and 414,00/1.2; in W18-49 with 567,000/.9 rating and 560,000/.9 rating, and in Female 12-34 with 445,000/1.0 rating and 485,000/1.1 rating.
Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 2.5/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS took 8p with a 3.9/12 average for Big Bang Theory and The Millers followed by 1.3/4 for NBC’s The Sing-Off. ABC stepped in to steal 9p with 2.7/7 for Grey’s Anatomy, versus 1.9/5 each for CBS’s The Crazy Ones and Two and a Half Men. ABC was back on top at 10p, earning 3.2/9 for Scandal, to beat the 1.7/5 posted by CBS’s Elementary.
