Charter Communications is preparing an offer letter for Time Warner Cable, according to multiple reports. With competition increasing from streaming companies like Netflix and retrans fees rising, consolidation would give Charter more bargaining muscle in future discussions with content providers; TWC talked to Comcast about a merger earlier this year.

IN THE NEWS

Matthew Perry is bringing The Odd Couple back to television. The Friends alum will write and exec produce, as well as star as Oscar Madison, in the CBS Television Studios project, which nabbed a script plus penalty commitment from CBS. Perry’s NBC comedy, Go On, was canceled in May.

Responding to criticism about the absence of African-American female cast members, Saturday Night Live has been holding auditions for several weeks to remedy the problem, reports the New York Times. Creator and exec producer of the NBC late night sketch show, Lorne Michaels, told the paper on Thursday that he is committed to hiring at least one new performer by early January.

More drama behind the scenes at NBC‘s midseason entry, Believe: Exec producer Dave Erickson is being replaced by Jonas Pate (Deception). Original showrunner Mark Friedman departed in July. No premiere date has been set.

Like another American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson will stretch her acting wings on television. But unlike Carrie Underwood on Sound of Music Live!, Clarkson will play herself, singing on ABC‘s Nashville with the show’s Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen, Billboard was first to report. Nashville airs Wednesdays at 10p.

After drawing criticism for reassuring The Kelly File audience Wednesday night that Santa is “just a white man” (and Jesus was, too), Megyn Kelly came out swinging on Friday, suggesting her detractors were race-baiting. “Humor is part of what we try to bring to the show,” said the Fox News anchor. “Sometimes that’s lost on the humorless.” While Kelly didn’t backtrack on Santa, she did admit Jesus’ race “is far from settled.”

Adam Sandler will guest on the special Super Bowl night episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine on February 2. Sandler, who is friends with Brooklyn star Andy Samberg, will play himself. The Fox comedy airs Tuesdays at 8:30p.

The International Academy of Arts & Sciences announced the International Emmy Awards competition is open for entries, including a new category for Non-English language U.S. primetime programs. Deadline is February 17, 2014.

Ahead of its union negotiation with production companies, The Writers Guild of America asked its members to approve a plan to increase compensation for cable shows. The negotiations “will take place in the context of a recovering economy and a healthy, and expanding, media industry,” said WGA West president Christopher Keyser and WGA East president Michael Winship in a letter. The current agreement expires May 1.
