IN THE NEWS

Aereo‘s response on Thursday to broadcasters’ petition for the Supreme Court to rule on the legality of the company transmitting local television signals to consumers via the Internet? Fine by us. “Broadcasters appear determined to keep litigating the same issues against Aereo in every jurisdiction that we enter,” said Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia. “We want this resolved on the merits rather than through a wasteful war of attrition.”

FX ordered Tyrant, about an American family in the Middle East, to series. FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said of the Teakwood Lane action drama, “Tyrant introduces characters and a world that have never been explored in a dramatic television series format. There is a reason a bidding war broke out over this project.” The show is slated for summer 2014.

HBO launched a “social media comedy roast” of Game of Thrones villain Joffrey Baratheon on December 12, aimed at continuing the conversation about the reviled character. “Join @GameofThrones’ #GoTFans today in a celebration of our love to hate King Joffrey Baratheon,” said the net’s post. Working with agency 360i, HBO reached out to show talent and celebrity fans for content, posting the best tweets on RoastJeffrey.com.

Proclaiming, “TV is dead. Long live TV,” a new report from Citi Research says it’s just a matter of time before digital delivery replaces broadcast and cable as the primary form of video consumption. “TV will migrate from the push-based delivery of linear channels over closed TV systems, to a pull-based delivery of specific shows via an app over an open system,” predicted Citigroup analysts in the report, saying Netflix is leading the charge.

The CW announced its midseason schedule. Star-Crossed premieres Monday, February 17at 8p, followed by Beauty and the Beast, which goes in hiatus after its March 10 telecast. Post-apocalyptic drama The 100 premieres Wednesday, March 19 at 9p, after Arrow. The Tomorrow People relocates to Beauty’s spot Mondays at 9p on March 17. Whose Line Is It, Anyway? returns Friday, March 21 with new eps at 8p and 8:30p; subsequent weeks will feature season one eps in the 8:30p slot. Hart of Dixie returns from a brief hiatus to a new night and time, Fridays at 9p, starting March 21.

Comedy Central‘s winter schedule includes new seasons of @midnight, Kroll Show, Workaholics, Tosh.0 and Inside Amy Schumer. The net is also premiering scripted comedies Broad City, about two pals navigating New York City, and Review, about a critic who reviews life experiences, and animated show TripTank.

It’s been 20 years since figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed on the knee weeks before the 1994 Olympic Games, in a plot masterminded by the husband of her rival, Tonya Harding, but questions remain about Harding’s complicity. The New Jersey mansion of Joseph Simmons – aka “Rev Run” from rap group Run DMC – and his wife, Justine, gets a total overhaul in DIY’s Rev Run’s Renovation. “Celebrity-driven programming has proven to be a top ratings performer for us,” Steven Lerner, SVP, programming and development, HGTV and DIY Network, tells Cynopsis. “Watching Rev Run and Justine deliberate over various aspects of their renovation makes them real and fun to watch – and anyone who has been through a home remodel can relate.” Series premieres Saturday, January 4 at 10p.

Hard partying, bar brawls and a country girl whose “two favorite accessories are her guns and her Bible” are featured in CMT‘s Party Down South. The reality show from 495 Productions (the folks who brought us Jersey Shore) premieres Thursday, January 16 at 10p.

PBS‘s Hawking offers an autobiographical account of the life of paralyzed physicist Stephen Hawking. The personal journey is told largely in Hawking’s own words, supplemented by stories from friends and fans including astronaut Buzz Aldrin, actor Jim Carrey and entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson. The Darlow Smithson Productions/PBS/Channel 4 documentary airs Wednesday, January 29 at 10p.

Science Channel can count on star power for its telecast of the 2014 Breakthrough Prizes, celebrating contributions in the science world. Kevin Spacey will host the show, with assists from Conan O’Brien, Glenn Close, Rob Lowe and Mark Zuckerberg. Special premieres Monday, January 27 at 9p.

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

NBCUniversal International Television has launched an unscripted development unit. “We’re supercharging our unscripted television business,” said SVP of factual and entertainment David Mortimer. “We are determined to be the home of the next big international format hit, and see the U.K. as the engine that drives our international television business.”

Break the Safe, which was BBC One‘s highest-rated show of the summer, is returning to the net for a second run. The Thames Scotland competition show will air Saturday nights.

Keshet International sold broadcasting rights of two of its shows to Globosat in Brazil: Prisoners of War (the format on which Homeland is based), and ambush show Deal With It.

‘TIS THE SEASON

Cozi TV, the NBCUniversal channel “designed to deliver easy-to-watch, comfortable and familiar programming,’ is celebrating the season with “Holiday Week.” Holiday-themed eps of old favorites like Magnum, P.I. and The Lone Ranger, as well as holiday films Mixed Nuts, Holiday, Scrooge and A Christmas Wish, run from Saturday, December 21 through December 25.

TBS will once again present 24 hours of holiday classic A Christmas Story, starting December 24 at 8p. This is the tenth year the marathon has run on the channel; prior to 2004 it ran for seven years on sister net TNT.

The Weather Channel is gifting Prospectors fans with a Christmas marathon on Wednesday, December 25 starting at 2p, followed by a new one-hour special at 10p, and another one-hour special on Sunday, December 29 at 8p, leading into the show’s season two finale. “Our fans want as much of this series as they can get,” David Clark, president of Weather tells Cynopsis. “We thought we’d give them a little surprise Christmas gift – seeing the big paydays, and a glimpse into some of the things that happen behind the cameras that they don’t usually get to see.”

With the release of daytime ratings for the week ending December 2, The Young and the Restless marked 1300 weeks, or 25 years as the most-watched daytime drama, a winning streak that began the week of December 26, 1988. Season to date, the CBS soap is averaging 5.1 million viewers.
